Lin Chaodong: (?○Д○)?
What's wrong with the flowers?
Lin Chaodong was still out of it and was somewhat taken aback by Liu's series of questions.
Is a son inferior to a sweet potato?
Should we call him by his full name?
What's wrong with Hua'er?
His mind was completely blank; he couldn't figure it out.
"Lin Chaodong! What are you thinking? I'm asking you a question! Are you going back to get me the sweet potatoes or not?"
Liu asked again impatiently.
No matter how turbulent Lin Chaodong's mind was, Madam Liu couldn't wait any longer. She had been out long enough, and she figured her young mistress was about to wake up and come to her for dinner. She needed to hear Lin Chaodong's definite answer before she could go back with peace of mind.
Lin Chaodong's mind wasn't fully focused on getting home, but his mouth involuntarily replied:
"I, I, I already said, I'm busy at home, and it's not safe to go out..."
Madam Liu, however, did not want to hear any of this. She frowned and interrupted Lin Chaodong:
"I don't want to hear any of that. I just want to ask you, when are you going back to harvest sweet potatoes?"
Lin Chaodong kept quiet. He had just returned; how could he possibly go back again? What was the point of going back and forth? Unless he went back and never came back.
He was worried that if she didn't come back, Liu would be left alone in the city.
Even if he were stupid, he knew he couldn't say these things, otherwise Liu would probably be even angrier, regardless of whether he was worried or not. If she said something like "Then don't come back," he would have nowhere to cry.
He didn't want to upset her right now. He just wanted to work hard and earn money. The house had already been bought by his third son, so he wouldn't have to pay rent anymore, making it much easier to save money. He wanted to bring the children over to live with him during the New Year, although he didn't know if Liu would be able to come along.
Lin Chaodong's silence ignited Liu's anger.
"You! You! You're something else, Lin Chaodong! You're something else!"
Liu was so angry that she turned and left without saying a word, not even wanting the things that Lin Chaodong had painstakingly brought her on a carrying pole, leaving Lin Chaodong with his outstretched hand, feeling extremely annoyed.
He still angered Madam Liu.
Lin Chaodong clenched his fists in bewilderment, wanting to chase after her but unable to. For the first time, he felt displeasure with Liu's lucrative job.
If Liu hadn't been a wet nurse in this wealthy family, if she had only taken on a job washing or mending clothes, wouldn't they have avoided this situation? Even if they had a falling out, wouldn't he have been able to chase after her?
Suddenly, Lin Chaodong didn't want Liu to continue being a wet nurse in this family. Their own son didn't even have enough to eat and had to be sent back to his hometown to be raised by his mother. Yet Liu was wholeheartedly nursing other people's children, not even willing to take a break. Lin Chaodong suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable.
Is this how a mother like Liu behaves?
Does she still remember that her son was born with poor health because he was in her womb for too long? The doctor said he would never be able to do heavy work and would be physically weak?
She kept saying she would work hard to earn money so she could bring both children over later, but where was her money? It's been two months, and apart from giving him enough for a one-way trip home to inquire about the situation, she hadn't given him a single extra penny.
Where is her money?
Don't tell her to keep everything to herself. She doesn't trust her husband of several years, but can she trust strangers in a stranger's house?
Lin Chaodong's thoughts wandered aimlessly, and the more he thought about it, the more frustrated he became. He had originally wanted to ask the old woman at the gate to help deliver the things to Liu Shi, but now he lost interest. He picked up his carrying pole and left in a huff.
Back in her young mistress's courtyard, Madam Liu indeed heard her mistress whimpering. She immediately knew that the young mistress didn't like the other wet nurse's milk but had no choice but to drink it because she was hungry. Her heart softened, and she hurriedly ran in, carefully took the young mistress from the other wet nurse's arms, and then sat her on the soft couch, loosening her sash...
Seeing this, the backup wet nurse silently rolled her eyes, but asked with concern:
"Sister Liu, why did you take so long! Miss needs to nurse as soon as she wakes up. You know that habit. What if Miss gets upset and cries because she wants my milk? Madam would be heartbroken!"
This woman, while saying she felt sorry for her mistress and pointed out the importance of Liu Shi, was not trying to flatter Liu Shi. She was clearly saying that Liu Shi did not serve her mistress diligently. Knowing the mistress's schedule and various habits, she was busy with her own private affairs, which was dereliction of duty!
Madam Liu ignored her, because she was indeed heartbroken by the little girl's whimpers earlier, and it was indeed her fault this time.
No, she did nothing wrong. The one who was wrong was the disobedient Lin Chaodong!
If Lin Chaodong hadn't been so misunderstanding and unable to help her, would she have bothered arguing with him for so long at the back door over a few sweet potatoes? If he had agreed then and there, she would have come back long ago!
As for the woman in front of her, if it weren't for the fact that her mistress would whine and moan whenever she drank her milk for some reason, given her status as a mother and the fact that her husband was a manager, Madam Liu really wouldn't be able to compete with her.
Therefore, even though she is now the young lady's indispensable wet nurse, she still doesn't have much prestige in the young lady's courtyard. At least, her status is not commensurate with her position in the courtyard.
But what could she say? If she offended the other party, they could use any means to bring her down.
After all, she was just a wet nurse. She seemed important, but she wasn't that important. If she was gone, we could just find another wet nurse for the young lady. It wasn't a big deal.
Seeing that Liu was still pretending to be mute as always, the spare wet nurse curled her lips and said nothing more. After all, the one who laughs last laughs best. Right now, the young lady is still a little kid who doesn't know anything except eating, drinking, defecating, and sleeping. When the young lady becomes sensible in the future, will she be worse off than this woman who intercepted her halfway?
Are you kidding me?! Have her husband's family and her own family been doing nothing all these years at the host's house?
On the other side, Lin Chaodong carried his load back to his rented room, casually put his things down, and threw himself onto the wooden bed. He stared blankly at the ceiling, where he could see glimmers of light, but felt a pang of sadness and wanted to do something to vent his frustration.
His wife, the mother of his two children, has changed!
She talks a good game, but her actions don't match her words at all. Instead, she's focused on being a wet nurse for a baby, asking him to go home and find out what's going on, and asking him to go back and bring sweet potatoes to her master. Does she even want the three of them anymore?
