Chapter 64 Lacking the Courage to Burn the Boats

When the villagers gradually started planting sweet potatoes, the spring water on the mountain finally stopped flowing. Someone in the clan suggested digging another well next to the old well, but the clan elders unanimously rejected the idea.

Their ancestors showed their mercy when they were short of water, giving them a well to drink. They should be grateful and content, not take advantage of their ancestors' concern.

Yue Jiuyue was unaware of this proposal; otherwise, she would have followed the original owner's shrewish behavior and insisted on getting the clan leader and elders to agree to it.

After all, the reason she only gave water from the well was not because she only had that much water, but because it was the only well near her house, and it was only convenient for her to give water from that well.

There are two other wells in Linjiagou. One well is at the foot of the western side of the back mountain, and the other well is in the southwest corner of the village. Both are quite far for Yue Jiuyue. She doesn't want to wander around the village in the middle of the night. Being constantly worried might cause various illnesses and is not good for longevity.

She's determined to be a great-great-grandmother!

The future great-grandmother of the Lin family is currently racking her brains over how to build a water channel from her home to the ancient well. She almost wishes she could give the whole village a chance for a collective deep sleep so she could get things done.

However, her house is only separated from the well by a threshing ground, so the distance is quite short. If she doesn't sleep all night, I don't know if she can finish the work.

Thinking of this, Yue Jiuyue suddenly felt a little resentful towards the original owner. Why couldn't she have built the house closer to the ancient well? Wouldn't it have been better to build the threshing ground to the east of the house? Then she wouldn't be in this predicament now.

"Mom, dinner's ready."

Looking at her mother-in-law sitting in the courtyard in a daze, Liu frowned, seemingly lost in thought.

"Oh, here it comes."

Yue Jiuyue snapped out of her thoughts, washed her hands, and then went inside to have dinner.

“Mom, the weeds in the field have grown to two inches tall recently. Tomorrow, the three of us brothers will go to hoe the field. After we finish hoeing, it will be time to water the field. I don’t know how to control them then.”

As Lin Chaodong spoke, he wanted to sigh. This year, his family had an extra acre of land, but they didn't know where to get water. In any case, there were no springs nearby that could provide hot water, and they couldn't go into the deep mountains and forests, since they hadn't reached the point where they couldn't survive yet.

It was Yue Jiuyue's daily filling of the ancient well that gave the villagers hope, but also robbed them of the courage to fight to the bitter end.

There will always be a way.

Yue Jiuyue said.

"I hope so."

Lin Chaodong didn't hold out much hope. It was already incredible enough that a miracle could happen once, let alone a second time.

The meal was eaten in silence. Yue Jiuyue couldn't get used to the wild vegetable soup, so she just ate it quickly and went back to her room.

Since the irrigation is about to begin, in order to have a decent harvest this year, we must resolve the water pipeline issue as soon as possible.

If it's not feasible tonight, then let's talk about it tomorrow night.

Knowing that she still needed to fill the well with water before dawn, Yue Jiuyue stopped worrying about the pipes and decided that washing up and going to bed early was the most important thing.

She gets up earlier than the rooster—that's her for sure!

Another ordinary day passed. In the evening, as usual, she had a bowl of wild vegetable soup. After finishing it, Yue Jiuyue went back to her room, but instead of washing up and going to bed as usual, she was waiting…
