After a brief silence, Xu Mo slowly raised his head and spoke again with a deep look in his eyes: "Then I'd like to trouble you to call Hershel down."
"Hey, you can tell me if you have anything on your mind. Maybe I can really help you!" Beth tilted her head, her big eyes blinking as she looked at Xu Mo. Her face was filled with enthusiasm and curiosity. She looked like a lively little deer, full of vigor and energy.
"You?" Xu Mo raised his eyebrows slightly, a hint of suspicion flashing in his eyes. He looked Beth up and down carefully, as if examining an innocent child. Then he shook his head slightly, and said with a hint of disdain in his tone, "You are so young, how can you make the decision?"
Hearing Xu Mo's words, Beth's originally bright smile disappeared instantly. Her little mouth was pouting high, her face full of displeasure. She stamped her feet and said angrily: "Who are you looking down on! You didn't even tell me what it is, how do you know I can't make the decision?"
"So what's going on? Tell me quickly!" Beth put her hands on her hips, her eyes showing a stubbornness, as if she would not give up until she got the answer. She looked so eager, like a kitten longing to know the answer.
Seeing Beth still asking questions, Xu Mo sighed helplessly. After thinking for a moment, he decided to get straight to the point:
"When our people were drawing water from your wells, they discovered a zombie had run into one of your wells, so we would like to ask for your advice on how to deal with this zombie."
"Zombies?" Beth's bright eyes were instantly clouded with doubt. Her brows furrowed slightly, and her small nose wrinkled as well. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she asked, "Are you referring to those patients?"
Xu Mo was not surprised to hear Beth say the word "patient". After all, he knew the original plot very well. In the first one or two days after the disaster, Hershel's family learned about the strange disease from the TV news.
However, the catastrophe was like a sudden storm, sweeping away everything in an instant. The television signal was soon cut off, and this isolated farm seemed to be forgotten by the world. Hershel and his group lived a self-sufficient life here, rarely going out, so their knowledge of the zombies was limited to those humans who had contracted strange diseases.
"Beth, do you really think those zombies are just 'patients'?" Xu Mo stared at Beth, his eyes revealing a complex emotion, including exploration, helplessness, and a desire to break her inherent cognition.
"Isn't it?" Beth's clear eyes were full of confusion when she heard Xu Mo's question. She raised her head slightly and asked back with a firm look, as if she was guarding an unquestionable truth. Her heart was full of pity and faith for those "patients", and she firmly believed that they were just sick, not some terrible monsters.
Xu Mo shook his head helplessly, sighing inwardly: There's nothing I can do. The Hershel family is just that stubborn. If I don't put the absolute facts before them, they will continue to harbor illusions about the zombies, just like stubbornly guarding a dying candle in the darkness.
After thinking for half a second, Xu Mo said:
"How about this, you call Hershel over, and I'll take you and Hershel to see for yourself whether the so-called 'patient' you are talking about is a zombie or a patient."
"Okay!" Hearing Xu Mo's words, Bei nodded without hesitation, her face showing excitement, as if she was about to explore a mysterious and unknown world. Then, like a happy little rabbit, she turned around and skipped back to the house.
While Xu Mo was talking to Beth.
In the study.
Hershel sat quietly at the quaint desk chair, his hands folded on the table, his fingers gently stroking, his brows slightly furrowed, his eyes deep and solemn, as if caught in an endless vortex of thought. He was concentrating on thinking about the dangers Xu Mo mentioned, trying to find some clues and answers from his rich life experience.
He has lived for over sixty years, and the years have left deep marks on his face, but they have also endowed him with a wealth of life experience. Although he can't be called a "human sage," he has seen and experienced a wide range of things, from the daily chores of the farm to the ups and downs of human nature, from the birth, aging, illness and death of animals to the joys and sorrows of humankind. These experiences are like a thick book, deeply engraved in his mind.
Based on his years of experience, he could keenly feel that Xu Mo's tone and eyes were genuine, without any falsehood or affectation. However, he was filled with doubts: How could he be in danger when he was so remote and isolated from the world?
Could it be those "patients"? Once this thought surfaced in his mind, it grew wildly like weeds, making his heart clench with anxiety.
As he pondered this, Hershel slowly stood up, his movements a bit slow, as if he were burdened by the weight of time. He walked to the French window in the study, put his hands on the windowsill, bent slightly, and looked out the window at the barn not far away. His eyes were filled with worry and doubt, as if some unknown danger lurked in the shadows of the barn, filling him with unease and suspicion.
Then, he gently shook his head, with a helpless smile on his face. That smile revealed helplessness towards fate and confusion about the unknown, as if saying: This world is becoming more and more incomprehensible.
Just then, there was a knock on the study door.
"Who?" Hershel straightened up slightly and asked towards the study door. His voice was steady and calm, but there was a hint of imperceptible nervousness.
