"Okay, okay! I will definitely remember it!" Max answered blankly. He really didn't know how dark the truth behind the rumors was.
But then again, how did these guys taste the smell of urine in the sabertooth? If the teeth alone had such high radiation levels, what about their bodies? Jiang Ling figured they either had some kind of supernatural ability that allowed them to remove toxins through cooking, or they simply didn't know the meat was radioactive. Of course, it's also possible that the sabertooths they got weren't all from the same batch; creatures born in different environments can be different, just like poison dart frogs.
The two walked along the road for another hour, during which time snow began to fall. The surface was temporarily uninhabitable, and the provisional government had only transported supplies to the Green Zone for early protective work. But Jiang Ling was not pessimistic. Compared to the doomsday scenes described in certain novels, the people of this world were far more powerful. Human civilization would eventually return to the earth, even if humans were no longer human. This statement was not contradictory. Think about it, can modern humans and primitive people from 20,000 years ago be considered the same kind of people? Based on genetics alone, it is difficult to say that they are the same kind. Therefore, the most important thing about civilization is the culture passed down through history, not the human beings themselves.
"Look there!" Max suddenly shouted, then ran forward faster.
Amidst the snowstorm, an orange-yellow fortress stood tall on the ground. In that instant, Jiang Ling felt the surrounding scene become familiar. In her imagination, the snowflakes around her froze in mid-air, the dark clouds in the sky vanished, and sunlight shone through the snowflakes, illuminating her and the building. She opened her mouth slightly and placed her right hand on her forehead, trying to block out the sunlight. She wanted to see the house clearly, to recognize the house she remembered.
The next moment, time continued to slip by, and she saw clearly that it was just the house she had stopped at. There was no sunlight, no smoke from cooking fires. Her home, No. 0201204, Block 3, NT0603 Station Residential Area, was no longer here. Jiang Ling hurried to catch up with Max, and then they circled half a circle around the building.
"Did you know? This is one of the few ground bases of the search team! And it is one of the few pre-war buildings that are so well preserved! I didn't expect it is still in operation!" Max was the first to get into the pressurized isolation cabin and extended his hand to Old Joe as an invitation.
Jiang Ling was very familiar with this place, even though she had only experienced it once. So after entering the cabin, she closed the pressure-resistant door.
"Have you been here before? I see you're pretty familiar with the operation."
"No, this is my first time here!"
"Really? Then you must have learned the relevant techniques. Let me tell you, this place is basically run by the search team on their own, and all the stuff was brought here by them in batches, so you can't just take anything here without permission."
"I know that what I take must be put back. Just like the fairy tale says, those who come here take what they need, and we must not be greedy, otherwise this safe haven will disappear forever."
"Yes, yes, yes! That's it. And this is just the basics! Better donate more, because just breathing here is using up supplies!"
While waiting for the automatic cleaning process, the two chatted a little more about the fortress. Max did most of the talking, Jiang Ling listened. It felt strange, but Jiang Ling finally restrained herself from telling him the truth. Hope and fairytales were hard to come by, and preserving a touch of mystery about the fortress would only make people cherish it more.
The two men came to a suite on the second floor and found that there were already several searchers there warming themselves by the fire.
"Is anyone here again? The protective suit can be taken off here!"
As the two men removed their heavy protective suits and other miscellaneous items, they continued chatting: "...The weather is getting colder, and the cost of maintaining the external pipelines is increasing. Next time we come, we'll have to bring materials to dress them!"
"The other two families didn't say anything, did they? If we want to keep this place, we can't afford it alone. And we don't really need to keep it. This base is too big, and it's much more difficult to preserve than a safe house."
"Don't be so discouraged. If things get worse, we can always ask the army for help! And the weather station won't let go of this good spot. They're having a hard time finding an observation site in the yellow zone right now. Several groups have already come looking. Accepting their funding will only mean sending two more teams per month."
"Let's take a closer look. We've invested so much effort here. And those lone travelers really need this place. I heard they've already signed a letter. It seems the Countermeasures Bureau has also taken notice of this place."
"Countermeasures Bureau? Aren't they in the outskirts? How did they notice this place? I'm not saying they're forgetful, I just don't believe they'd notice this place. This is the central area, less than 80 kilometers away from the central station."
"Ah, are you ready? You can come and warm yourself by the fire first. You two should make some room for them. Would you like some tea to warm yourself up? Mint tea." The middle-aged balding man brought over two folding stools, while the other two people next to him stood up slightly and used their buttocks to move the stools they were sitting on a little further away.
"Pour me some!" Max replied.
"I don't need it!" Jiang Ling waved the drink bottle removed from the protective suit.
"Female searcher? How rare!" exclaimed the balding middle-aged man.
"Is it rare? I've heard that a few times today." Jiang Ling unscrewed the bottle cap, set the rubber straw aside, and took two sips. The bottle of Green Claw had been warmed by her body temperature, and she didn't like it very much.
