Jiang Ling's plan was simple: first, test the crossbows' power, then kill any surviving mutants. Finally, if she could find the key, she'd use it to open the door. If not, she'd turn back. She didn't want to destroy the door directly; that would be a complete waste of resources and render some of the medicine stored inside worthless.
After Jiang Ling got downstairs, she discovered that some groundwater had accumulated in the basement, and the cold weather had frozen it. This forced her to use her telekinesis to steady her steps. If she slipped, who knows what the consequences would be.
The mutants had sensed another visitor to their nest. These four-legged "little creatures" could barely ignore the slippery ice, and they decided to circle around the visitor to observe him. This unexpected visitor was far more alert than they had imagined. As they approached, an unknown object pierced the side of one of their companions with a piercing sound, but fortunately, the other was unharmed. They had experienced loud attacks before, but never this strange, silent one, and it made them irritated.
Jiang Ling wasn't too discouraged when she saw her first shot miss the target. Crossbow training is actually quite challenging. Compared to firearms, it takes a longer period of time for an average person to master a crossbow. And for someone like her who had never used a crossbow before, a miss on her first shot was perfectly normal, so she immediately switched to another carbon arrow.
"Swish!" This time, the shot hit the mutant, and it let out a shrill scream, loud and full of life. It seemed that the arrow's power had reached its limit. Jiang Ling, remembering Li Wenjia's experience, couldn't help but become more cautious with mutants. In the dim light, she saw that the mutant had only suffered a minor skin break. The barbs on the carbon arrowhead lingered in the skin, continuously stimulating its nerves with every movement.
"Is this a saber-toothed beast? Why does it look so much like a dog?" Jiang Ling noticed that these mutants resembled large dogs, only much larger, about the height of a man and the weight of two. The frozen ice shattered when they stepped on it, while she herself remained intact. A thirty-centimeter-long crossbow bolt was clearly no match for these large dogs, and their skin was said to be bulletproof.
Jiang Ling replaced the armor-piercing arrow with the crossbow and aimed again.
"Swish!" "Boom!" The instant the armor-piercing arrow struck the wounded saber-toothed beast, the shaped charge on the arrowhead ignited. Then, within a few hundredths of a second, the expanding, hot gases propelled the specially crafted cone of metal, forming a high-temperature jet that effortlessly pierced the large dog's body. The heat exchanged with the moisture within its body, creating a steam explosion. The next instant, the saber-toothed beast was shattered into three pieces, scattering everywhere. The air suddenly carried the aroma of barbecue.
This powerful weapon had a profoundly intimidating effect. The dogs went berserk, darting around Jiang Ling, making her aim more difficult. She randomly selected a mutant's method of death from her backpack and mounted it on her crossbow. The dogs were already very close, and their dodging was ultimately futile given her 360-degree sensing ability.
"Swish!" The arrow was an electric arrow, and its effect upon impact was not very noticeable. The unfortunate mutant's hair stood on end, but that was all. Jiang Ling thought that electric arrows would be very useful as non-lethal weapons in the future. Their arrowheads were blunt and could not penetrate anything.
The large dogs, enraged by the bizarre attack, began to roar at the creature before them. Humans are actually quite large in the eyes of animals, and they wouldn't dare attack directly. But these large dogs only needed a chance: if the creature before them retreated even a little, it would be their clarion call to attack.
"Swish!" "Bang!" Jiang Ling's eardrums were painfully shaken by the explosive arrow, while the sharp-toothed beast, directly hit by the blast, was bleeding profusely, looking as if it was dying. It seemed that this kind of arrowhead was a thing that hurt the enemy a thousand times while hurting yourself eight hundred times, and should not be used lightly.
With only two left, Jiang Ling was pincered by the saber-toothed beasts, one in front and one behind. These mutants were clever, but they'd picked the wrong opponent today. She didn't plan to use the remaining poison and incendiary arrows in this basement. The flesh of these mutants might be edible, but destroying them all would be a waste. So, lights began to appear around Jiang Ling's body, and after a dozen seconds, the basement returned to peace.
Now she understood the power of her beams. The last two mutants had holes the size of bowls pierced through their bodies, leaving a white spot on the concrete floor that was still hissing with heat. The two large dogs collapsed to the ground, their blood vessels stagnating from the heat; not a single drop of blood flowed.
Jiang Ling didn't know what to do with the monster meat, so she returned to the surface again: "Max! It's safe down there, but what about the meat of the sharp-toothed beasts?"
A figure emerged from the nearby ruins. "You, you made such a noise! I thought the army was coming!"
"Won't it attract other mutants?"
"No, in most cases not. It might just attract a mutant."
"What?"
"People! Only people would be curious about the sound of explosions!"
. . . . . .
"Oh my god! Did you do all this? There are four of them! Back then we were...Okay, let's not talk about that. Did you find the key?"
