Chapter 24 The Sun

Going hiking in the middle of the night was not a good decision, but it was the best way Li Wenjia could think of to relax.

This method had been around for a long time. In the past, whenever Lao Ma was troubled by work, Qinghai would take him up a high place to gaze out into the distance. And just the day before Qinghai's death, the three of them climbed a tall building and took in the distant view of the frozen lake. After that, Qinghai's image seemed to be etched in Lao Ma's mind; whenever he was alone, he would quietly gaze towards a certain place.

Li Wenjia knew what he was looking at, but he didn't want to reveal it. Sometimes he would overlap with that figure, which would confuse Lao Ma's cognition.

Li Wenjia's night vision was not very good. Although he brought a tactical flashlight, he could not use any light source in this place. He could only open his eyes as much as possible and walk in front of Lao Ma to help him compact the fluffy snow.

This place is very close to the arc, and any light source is likely to attract drones. The infrared radiation of two humanoid objects may not be much, but it is still a risky behavior. At least, it is best to find a place to cover their bodies when they reach the top of the mountain.

Lao Ma followed behind, neither asking Li Wenjia to slow down nor stopping to rest. He simply followed slowly, following the path left by the previous person, walking slowly and resolutely.

At this moment, he didn't need to think. He just had to follow the experience of his predecessors. Even if the road was bumpy and winding, he was not afraid. He could even do better than his predecessors.

Li Wenjia found a mushroom on the top of the mountain. Its cap was just big enough to cover two people, so he stopped there.

The snow here is not like the flat land below. Instead, it has been repeatedly frozen and thawed under the wind and sun, gradually turning into a fluffy snow and ice. They look like snowflakes, but they are actually quite strong and cannot be dug out by hand.

Li Wenjia used the folding shovel he had brought with him to dig for a while on the top of the mountain, finally creating a makeshift shelter beneath the mushrooms. He piled the compacted snow around the pit, pounding it into shape with the shovel, creating a trapezoidal windbreak half a man's height around the pit.

After he finished his work, he stuck the shovel into the snow wall of the shelter and dug out a depression on it to use as a storage cabinet for sundries, and then put all the bits and pieces he had on him in there.

These tasks themselves didn't require much effort; they simply took time. But the person behind was indeed too slow. After Li Wenjia finished cleaning up here, he waited for another ten minutes before Lao Ma finally climbed to the top of the mountain.

The guy reached the end of the path and was confused by the chaotic footprints around him. He stood on the top of the mountain, looking a little at a loss.

"Hey! Here!" Li Wenjia stuck half of his head out and called out to the figure in the dark.

The man seemed to have heard a sound, and he carefully identified the direction in the dark, and then walked towards Li Wenjia.

He stopped at the top of the pit and glanced down. The darkness inside the snow pit made him hesitate. He didn't know how much height difference there was below. It wasn't until he heard the familiar voice again that he squatted down, carefully holding onto the snow on the ground, and then reached down with his feet.

It wasn't as deep as he had imagined. In fact, as soon as he put his foot down, he felt a warm hand grabbing his leg.

Seeing that the others had arrived, Li Wenjia covered the entire bunker with a camouflage net. Then, he found a palm-sized semiconductor light from the sunken area, casually inserted it into the wall of the pit, and lit it.

The light immediately dispelled the darkness and illuminated everything around the shelter.

Old Ma squinted his eyes and found a bench made of compacted snow at the bottom of the pit. He took a few breaths, but was immediately choked by a violent cough. He endured the foul air inside the protective suit and fumbled around for a long time, but still couldn't find the two round objects.

A hand was stretched out in front of him, with two filter canisters on it.

"You haven't changed for a long time, right? Fortunately, the nuclear pollution here is not too strong." Li Wenjia asked with concern.

Old Ma took the filter canister, used all his strength to pull off the pull ring on the canister, and then carefully installed it on his helmet. He leaned against the pit wall behind him and took a long time to relax before thanking Li Wenjia.

Seeing that the man was fine, Li Wenjia turned and walked to the other side, moved the camouflage net a little, stood up straight, exposed half of his head, and then stopped moving.

Lao Ma didn't know what he was looking at, but curiosity drove him to follow his example, using some snow to raise himself up, and then looked at the same place.

That is the distant place, the destination of the expedition team, the Shuchuan metropolitan area.

However, in the darkness, they could see nothing except for some accidentally missed rays of light. In the distance, among the dark mountains, a few beams of light occasionally swept across the clouds.

They looked out for a while, and Li Wenjia seemed to have thought of something. He bent down and turned off the light.

After a while, their eyes seemed to adjust to the darkness. Their dilated pupils gradually became able to distinguish distant objects. It proved that only those who stand in darkness can truly see the light.

The closest thing to them was a curtain made up of light points.

The drones hovering in midair are like fireflies in the summer grass, with faint signal lights and searchlights flickering across the pitch-black earth. The light points move through the darkness, creating a sense of three-dimensionality. Their movements appear complex, but they actually follow a certain pattern.
