Chapter 30 Second Trial (V)

He glanced at the favorable terrain near the road, then controlled his body, crossed the road neatly and arrived at the other side of the intersection. He had already wasted a lot of time, but fortunately, the route he took to chase his treasure overlapped with his mission target.

The sun had already reached its highest point for the season. It was approximately noon, and there was only one day and one night left until the scheduled evacuation time.

Li Wenjia must speed up.

Perhaps because this is an old settlement, the houses here are basically well preserved. Obviously, it has not been used as a material collection area by those industrial robots.

He didn't take the main road, but instead walked through the dark alleys. The winding alleys were like the intestines of a giant. Although they were chaotic and filthy, they generally connected the front and back. It didn't take him long to cross several blocks.

After passing a straight, well-maintained urban highway running from north to south, Li Wenjia climbed up the iceberg and saw his long-awaited mission target - he came to the only way to the station.

He sighed, but did not stop and continued on his way.

As he slid down another iceberg, the familiar dog paw prints appeared again.

Li Wenjia didn't know what to say. Should he say it was the intersection of worldly circumstances? Or was it a coincidence of fate?

The pleasure of regaining what he had lost caused his brain to secrete an excessive amount of dopamine, causing him to relax. He recalled his experiences today, and how every time he was at a critical juncture or on the verge of despair, there would always be a sudden turn of events, with one coincidence after another, that would bring the red thread of fate back to its original position.

He felt like a character in a novel, his every sensible action orchestrated. He walked slowly along the winding mountain road, his anxiety no longer evident. If someone truly was controlling him, then his future was predetermined.

This winding and spacious road was not affected by the nuclear war, and there was not much snow on the road. Li Wenjia walked very smoothly, which was much smoother than the bad things that happened in the morning.

What are those things!?

The car is gone, the comrades are gone, the equipment is gone, and the wife is gone.

It doesn't matter anymore.

Well, I found my wife, but I don’t know how she is doing now.

After the pleasure came exhaustion. Li Wenjia didn't know how he managed not to cry. He felt like he wasn't strong enough. His emotions were indeed a bit out of control. He wishfully believed that the paw prints were left by the dog that stole his wallet.

He felt like he was walking on the clouds. This winding mountain road was like a ladder to heaven. With every step forward, he felt tremendous pressure.

The fear of the unknown attacked him, and the unpredictable fate suffocated him.

It was so quiet that even the sound of the wind had died away. For a moment, he thought he was the only living person here, and that the world had been completely destroyed.

"Boom! Boom boom!" The continuous explosion sounds reached his eardrums.

He stopped and looked towards the place where the sound came from.

Stand high and see far.

The expeditionary force began a new round of fire. Tiny flashes suddenly appeared on the distant ground, like sunlight reflected off the ripples of a lake. From afar, those flashes of destruction seemed insignificant.

Human beings are like this, small and great.

Li Wenjia regained his confidence. Although he was alone now, he still had a strong and iron-clad rear.

Forward, forward, keep moving forward!

He finally climbed the last section of the hill. The judgment of fate was just around the corner.

The station was well-maintained. According to the expedition's database, it had been expanded four times before the war, each time doubling its area. Now it looked like it had been dug out of the mountain, with about half of the building hidden inside.

Li Wenjia naturally went through the main gate. There was no need for him to look for any weird side entrances. After all, he wasn't a dog and didn't need to crawl through a dog hole. This place was also automated. The entire station was deserted, and the waiting area was completely empty.

The vending machines here seemed to still be working; he had no idea how they had survived. As he passed the bright red vending machine, the intelligent system inside uttered a classic greeting to him: "Welcome!"

It’s like going back to the old days...

He walked to the vending machine involuntarily and tried to pay by scanning his face.

"Account balance—zero."

Well, that makes sense.

Li Wenjia couldn't remember opening any accounts, so it was normal that he couldn't make a payment. He laughed self-deprecatingly and then randomly pressed some buttons on it. He had been in the army all his life and was somewhat out of touch with society.

After a while, his curiosity faded. He would never be able to drink those strange drinks. . . .

"Clang~"

A can of warm caffeinated beverage fell out of the dispenser.

Li Wenjia bent down in surprise to pick it up from the ground, examining it carefully. It was called "Dilin Coffee," produced just a week ago, and the price listed on the vending machine was 3 yuan.

Just as he was wondering, the vending machine uttered an inorganic female voice at the perfect moment: "Online payment completed. Account balance - zero yuan. Thank you for your patronage!"

What's going on? Is this a system bug? Is my luck really that good? Has my luck changed?

He was initially ecstatic, but quickly calmed down. If only it were just luck. Even winning the lottery wasn't necessarily random. Everything is man-made; behind every event, there's always a perpetrator. The possibility of deliberate action couldn't be ruled out.
