Chapter 99 Controlled Evolution (Part 1)

After a day of simulation training, Liu Haiyang dreamed about the "human disparity" he had witnessed. He later tried to learn that way of thinking, but it only lasted less than two minutes before it ended with a meteorite hitting the screen.

Over the next few days, he unwillingly repeated the same thing several times. Each failure only exacerbated his annoyance, especially after he saw Jiang Ling also perform that kind of "precognitive" operation.

Then, his psychological problems caused by a variety of factors were noticed by the doctor during his weekly routine check-up. It was probably on the evening of February 19th that Jiang Ling met him for the last time in the cafeteria before the launch mission.

"It's time." He took a mouthful of the synthetic protein sauce.

"So fast? Your application was approved?" Jiang Ling, who was sitting opposite, was poking at the terminal he had received a few days ago, and was talking nonsense while trying to do three things at once.

"I'd also like to ask how that was done. It's always a pity if you don't find out before you leave." Liu Haiyang answered the question irrelevantly.

"Have you tried what I told you last time?"

"Of course! I've summarized it, and what you said is basically the same." He took a sip of mouthwash and continued, "I call your theory the Bicycle Theory. What's important isn't how fast or how far you ride, but the process of getting the bicycle moving—you think that trying it a few times will work, just like the kids did."

"But you didn't succeed, did you?"

"No, I should have succeeded, but that's not the problem."

"Uh, okay! I thought you wanted to come here for comfort!" Jiang Ling smiled awkwardly.

Liu Haiyang ignored her probing and continued with a hint of verification, "The problem is that after I succeeded once, I couldn't train the same way again. Don't you think it's strange? It's like you can't learn to ride a bike when you can walk, and after you learn to ride a bike, you forget how to walk. Shouldn't walking and riding a bike be an either-or relationship, rather than an either-or relationship?"

"Let me think about it... I think you're overthinking it. Your brain never forgot how to walk; it's simply a matter of adapting. Some people adapt faster than others. By the way, have you ever tried a reverse bike? One where you turn the handlebars to the left but the bike turns right? It's a bit like the rudder of an old airplane. I heard that some pilots never learn to ride a bicycle, and that's probably why. Do you understand?"

"Well, sort of?" Liu Haiyang nodded thoughtfully. "So, according to you, everyone can learn any skill, but the time or resources consumed will vary?"

"That's not what I meant. Although what you said is not wrong, at least it is logically correct. It should be like that!" Jiang Ling looked up at him and continued playing with the terminal.

"I know, I know what you mean. Reverse cycling reverses the brain's original experiential mapping. Once the brain adapts to this change, it completely changes the conditioned reflexes of the muscles and nerves, just like the upside-down world seen by a baby." Liu Haiyang said as he used a spoon to gesture on the plate, breaking up the square paste-like food. "So I've been thinking about this these past few days. Have you ever thought about this question? If people enter the universe on a large scale and adapt to it, they will completely forget about life on Earth. Then only a very small number of people like us can quickly adapt to the changes in the environment?"
