Chapter 44 Groundhog Day (End)

"Hey, what happened last time?"

"The last time I left here was three months ago. Didn't your plan only start after last Christmas?"

"So! It's only been three months?"

After rushing past the humanoid roadblock, the group didn't breathe a sigh of relief. The scene before them only deepened their confusion. Logically, the closer they got to the control center, the closer they were to civilization. Yet, here, all they saw was the devastation left behind by civilization. Collapsed buildings, piles of abandoned vehicles, and the corpses of unknown creatures scattered across the ground.

"Should we continue with our plan?" Everyone looked at each other. They really couldn't understand what was going on here.

"Are we going back like this? I don't accept it!" a fanatic protested.

"No, we can't go back. We must complete the mission first! At least let those who are looking forward to us know that we have completed the mission!" The old uncle thought for a while and concluded.

The mission continues.

The scenery behind them became boring, and most of the plans they had made at the beginning were useless. The bleak scenery they had seen before alternated on both sides of the road, but it was nothing more than increasing in number and increasing in disgust.

The sight of charred bodies scattered everywhere made the people in the car feel nauseous. Fortunately, they were wearing helmets, so the stench wouldn't cause any physiological reactions.

The control center was also at the center of Area One, acting like a pillar, supporting the entire colony's dome. Overall, this pillar actually spanned four areas. This meant that beneath the feet of Area Three lay an unknown fourth area. Beyond the dome, polar night had already fallen, and the only remaining light was thanks to a massive lighting device atop this pillar.

They worked together to move the pile of garbage blocking the control center's outer entrance and exit, then drove deeper. They were now only a hundred kilometers away from their mission objective. Having witnessed the devastating conditions outside, everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon entering this area.

This place is maintained by intelligent drones, and there are no gardens or artificial landscapes, so it doesn't look dilapidated. According to my uncle, this area is the support structure of the entire colony. There are several huge supports connected to this disk, and those supports are deep into the rock formations.

"There shouldn't be anyone blocking the way from behind. Everything here is automatic."

"Will they let us in?"

"We don't have to go in, we just have to park close enough and then move the little guy out the back and we can leave!"

"We don't even have to evacuate separately. No one will come to check here!"

After another two hours of driving, they finally reached the pillar. This human-made wonder would have been truly astonishing, had there been anyone around to see it.

The leader got off the truck first, and seeing that there was no problem, the others also got off. They opened the cover at the back of the truck and worked together to lift a wooden box down.

"Before we leave, don't we really want to see this secret weapon?"

"Yeah, there's no one here!"

Indeed, before undertaking anything significant, one must be mentally prepared for the situation at hand, right? Furthermore, their mission had already been accomplished. These people had undertaken this with the resolve to die. If they hadn't taken a look, even if they returned unscathed, they would have regretted it for the rest of their lives, right?

"Then let's take a look!" The leader finally shook his head helplessly. In fact, he was also very curious.

Just as they were trying to pry open the crate, something unexpected happened. Or rather, it had already happened the moment they opened the lid. The drones, as if startled, gathered around them at full speed. These drones were the quietest models, and the people prying the planks were completely unaware of the impending danger.

"What is it? An iron ball?"

"There won't be any electronic components in it?"

"Look, those drones are coming towards us!"

"Alarm! Intrusion detected! Alarm! Intrusion detected! Intrusion detected..." Suddenly, the entire control center began to emit a loud beeping sound, which made everyone dizzy. The two teammates who were not in good physical condition fell to the ground and lost consciousness in an instant.

"Run!" The leader tried to pull up his fallen teammate, but it was too late.

Without further ado, the machines revealed the gun barrels hidden in their bodies and pointed them at everyone: "Target found! Target found!"

Then the mechanical eyes of these machines retracted and turned towards everyone at the same time, and in order to prevent the targets from resisting, each person was assigned at least three drones.

"Order: Clear on the spot!"

The moment the program signal was sent, the drones opened fire. The metal bullets ignored the transport vehicle and rushed through the bodies of the idealists, bursting into blood.

The six of them had no chance of resistance from the start. These drones were part of a specialized security subsystem. The final order from those who once controlled it was to eliminate all living things that approached the core, including themselves. This order had been carried out countless times since the mutant outbreak.

Someone will definitely ask how the mutants in the lower levels are eliminated. I can only say that they are all eliminated in this way, but the living people don’t know this and don’t care about it.

"Swoosh", the flying bullet seemed to hit something it shouldn't have hit, causing devastating consequences.

. . . . . .

"What's going on? Why is there no signal?"

Lower-level managers had stepped out of their comfort zones, and the intelligent systems they relied on for survival had all gone out of control at the same time. Some of the unlucky ones had even just been killed by the machines running around on Mars.

When the workers discovered that the law enforcers' machines were useless, they cheered and chaos ensued.

The workers quickly organized themselves and began charging the management's privileged area. Without the drones' protection, the barefoot curly-haired men were completely powerless, offering only a token resistance before being apprehended. They were then escorted to their eternal resting place, where a unique public trial began.

Of course, if you think that what I want to write about is just a successful uprising, then it would be over now. But it is just the beginning!

What these workers had no idea was that the moment the signal disappeared, they would enter a countdown to their lives. The colony's control center had a final safety feature: if the three upper areas lost control, the core device at the bottom would automatically enter a self-destruct sequence.
