Chapter 24 The Sun

These drones, or rather, drones, were known to those unfamiliar with military affairs before the war by a resounding name: "Fei Lian." Like other cutting-edge weaponry, the name was derived from the Classic of Mountains and Seas. In legend, these mythical beasts excelled at flight and could prey on insects and weak beasts, appearing at first glance to be some kind of beneficial animal.

However, in reality, that mythical beast is extremely ferocious, and almost all insects are on its diet. In this respect, it is indeed very similar to a drone.

Of course, those "Fei Lian" drones aren't actually called that, and they aren't all the same. They're a group, each with its own model. They don't usually rely on a single model for a particular mission. Each model has a different target, and the Hunter coordinates these different models to maximize their effectiveness.

Before the war, top researchers considered drone swarms to be a nearly perfect tool. Indeed, using this technology, the motherland has kept most wars at bay.

They were like imaginary shields, and most attacks at the time were unable to penetrate their thick defenses. People might be able to create homogeneous armor several meters thick, but compared to theirs, which usually had to be more than ten kilometers in depth, the difference in defense depth was truly enormous.

And now, the guardian of national security has become an insurmountable obstacle for the expedition team.

The two stood in silence for a long time, trying to find every flaw in the distance. The distance was like a screen folded hundreds of times, each layer seemingly having huge gaps, but the whole was actually airtight.

"What are you looking at?" Li Wenjia heard a hoarse voice beside him.

"I'm not looking at anything. I'm just waiting. Waiting for an opportunity."

"Where's the chance? This isn't a game like Crossing the Road. Those programs won't leave you a way out; they'll only set traps for you. It seems to me that only a god could descend and trap Fei Lian in his gourd before you can get to the other side."

"God descending to Earth? Hmm... in a sense, it does look like that." Li Wenjia rubbed his chin and thought for a moment. "I'm waiting for sunrise. Have you checked the weather forecast? The rear said they observed a brief clearing of the weather a day ago. If I'm not mistaken, that hole in the clouds will pass by us tomorrow morning."

"Sunrise? Cough cough..." Lao Ma coughed. He was confused by Li Wenjia's unconventional thinking.

"I heard that watching the sunrise can relieve psychological stress. Look, I even brought a camera."

Old Ma turned to look at Li Wenjia and noticed a square object the size of a tissue box to the right of his head. Could that be a camera? He had never seen such a thing before.

Lao Ma didn't feel any pressure that needed to be relieved. He just thought Li Wenjia was wasting his time, so he asked, "Why watch the sunrise? What's the point?"

It was still several hours before dawn, so instead of waiting for sunrise, he might as well go back to sleep. After all, most of the time, so-called mental stress was just a lack of rest.

"Then tell me, what is meaningful? Defending the country? Eliminating violence and maintaining peace? But those things cannot be done all at once, they all involve a process. I know you are thinking that, but is what you are doing now really meaningful?" Li Wenjia's tone was very calm, and he didn't seem like someone who would start a quarrel at all.

Old Ma thought back to what had happened in the past few days. On this point, it was indeed the same as what Xiao Li said. He tried to argue, but was immediately blocked by what he wanted to say.

He had no choice but to take two steps back, sit on the bench, and whispered, "I'll take a nap. Call me when it's dawn."

Li Wenjia didn't respond. He stood there like a statue. Although the mountaintop he was on wasn't very high, the view wasn't blocked by the mountains. Beyond the curtain of light, he could see farther.

The war there seemed to have ceased. Sparsely dotted across the plain were a few points of light, unmistakably the traces of civilization. The distribution of these traces was uneven, with some areas as bright as day, while others were pitch black.

They had been out of contact with the rear for several months, which wasn't a long time, but the changes there were already very obvious. Li Wenjia didn't know what the situation was like there now, but it was definitely completely different from the situation in the rear.

If the current situation continues, perhaps in a dozen years, no, maybe in a few years, or even a few months, it is possible that the people in the two places will become two different creatures.

If that happens, when the expedition finally breaks through the blockade and arrives there.

What kind of thing would that be? Could it be a fifth-kind contact?

Li Wenjia was frightened by his own thoughts. If possible, he didn't plan to meet any aliens in this life.

He closed his eyes and felt the air flow around him.

He found that the wind was blowing now, and there was an air current from the east, blowing slowly over his head. The temperature of that air current was higher, but it was still relatively cold. The breeze accelerated the heat exchange around him and took away the heat from his head.

Li Wenjia retracted his head before he froze to death.

The bunker was dark, but it brought a strange sense of security. Li Wenjia didn't turn on the light again. Instead, he felt his way along the pit wall and slowly moved to Lao Ma's side. He also sat down.

As time passed, the wind outside grew louder and louder. The air currents struck the windbreaks surrounding the shelter, causing the camouflage net to crackle.
