A lot had happened since she woke up yesterday. When Jiang Ling woke up from her room the next day, her mind was still buzzing. It seemed that the beautiful life in the other world was no longer there, and now humans had to fight for survival.
Yesterday, after a simple dinner, she used Jiang Wenwen's terminal to check a lot of information. Although her home was some distance away from the entrance of the site, she could receive some signals, so there was no problem in reading some text information.
The known human world has shrunk considerably, now encompassing a circle with a radius of approximately 200 kilometers, centered on the Demon City. Even within this circle, there's no such thing as a paradise. Vast swathes of the surface have been marked as moderately polluted by drones released after the war, with only a few areas remaining in the green zone. Furthermore, while the great deity "Hou Tu" has preserved much of the surface, some areas have still managed to break through the defenses.
The nuclear weapons used in the later stages of the war were all extremely powerful, and even if they exploded at the edge of this circle, they would still cause massive damage. Furthermore, the coast of the Magic City was directly struck by a two-megaton hydrogen bomb, destroying most of the desalination plant.
"Eighty percent of the Magic City, sixty percent of Piaocheng, fifty percent of Jinling, twenty percent of Hangwan, and some small cities. Is this all that's left on the surface? I don't know how many underground stations still exist, but judging by what Uncle Ma said, the survival rate should be quite high." Jiang Ling did a quick calculation and was surprised to find that about one-third of the circle still contained low-pollution areas. Therefore, rebuilding a surface city was still possible.
"Jiang Ling! Are you awake?" Huang Yun opened the door and saw her sitting at the head of the bed, grinning foolishly with the terminal in her hand. It was as if she had returned to the past. "If you're awake, get up and pack your things. We can follow the search team's car back this afternoon!"
Jiang Ling put down the terminal and noticed a set of clothes on the bedside table to her right. She took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. After today, every day would be a new era for her.
How should I describe this outfit? It basically wrapped her up tightly, like an old-fashioned school uniform—sturdy, durable, and ugly, with a kind of bulky, black, and crude military aesthetic. It was generally dark in color: a brown windbreaker with a hood, a sleeveless cotton coat underneath, and a set of stretchy gray winter underwear underneath. The bottom half was a pair of wide, long dark blue overalls, with a pair of decent cotton pants underneath, which also matched the jacket. On her feet were a pair of thick, long wool socks and a pair of black boots.
After getting dressed, Jiang Ling realized her good figure was mostly obscured by her clothes. But overall, she still looked better than the average person. She noticed something else underneath her clothes: a shoulder-style belt. It would be very convenient to hang things on it, so Jiang Ling accepted it with a smile.
There wasn't much to take away, primarily personal belongings and valuables. Huang Yun had already taken any larger items underground. All that remained to be packed were a quilt, a few folding chairs, a kettle, teacups, pots and pans, and a few important items and souvenirs. Thanks to the preservation of most artifacts of civilization, virtually everything tradable could be purchased in the underground world.
"Don't you need to take all this food in the fridge? And some wine on the shelf?"
"No need, leave them all to the search party. We won't be coming back here again!"
"Really?" Jiang Ling understood. She knew this house would no longer be hers after today. A home exists only when people are around. Even if people lose their land, both the people and the land remain! She found a piece of cardboard and, using a piece of leftover charcoal, wrote on it, "Supplies inside, take them yourself." She planned to hang the cardboard on the security door.
The group spent about two hours cleaning up, and at lunchtime, they briefly tried the synthetic sausage. It was Jiang Ling's first time eating this, and she only tasted a hint of soy sauce. The meat didn't feel like meat, more like starch. "What kind of meat is this?"
"Monster meat!" Jiang Wenwen took a sip of the tea in the thermos.
"Not all monsters killed by mutant hunters can be eaten. Usually, they are eaten by things like sabertooths and savage pigs."
"What are those?"
"Dog, pig!"
"If people like to call it that, then let them call it that. The official materials all contain the original forms!" Huang Yun interrupted. She had included some folk names in her teaching plan. She was not very opposed to that way of calling it, and it was very vivid.
"It's only been a month! Has that much changed?"
"The nuclear war is over. Is there anything that can't be changed? How can you be more stubborn than me?"
"Okay, I guess they should be here by now, let's go downstairs!" Huang Yun hung the key to the security door on the edge of the cardboard, then picked up a small suitcase and motioned for the two to follow.
Jiang Ling followed Huang Yun, carrying two suitcases, to a suite on the first floor. There were many miscellaneous items left by the search team. Jiang Ling saw a room filled with many grayish-white objects that had been sawed into pieces. She turned to Jiang Wenwen and asked, "What is that?"
"Mushrooms can be used as firewood."
"What! Can it grow that big?"
"Yes, it is said that the search team found larger mushrooms in the original park area in the city. Their stems and caps are woody, and when burned, they emit a fragrance that can help you sleep."
"Isn't it poisonous?"
"What are you thinking? The sample has already been analyzed. The essential oil in that thing can even relieve heart disease!"
