Chapter 6 New Home

The experience in the decontamination room wasn't anything to write home about, if you've ever been to a public bathhouse. When they arrived, men and women were already inside scrubbing the body with large brushes, wearing protective gear, of course. The water from the showers was a bit green, apparently because it had been spiked with some substance that could trap radioactive fallout.

Through the sound of running water, Jiang Ling heard some people inside seemed to be talking about something.

"I heard that people in Districts 1 and 3 have mutated again in the residential areas?"

"Yes, that's the news from noon. Their family and friends are hesitant to use stabilizers!"

"You have to choose between becoming a monster or having a one in ten chance of dying."

"Have you used it? It's best to use it before you mutate. At least you won't always look like a monster!"

"No, I value my life! If it changes, just give me some peanuts."

Humans are always so contradictory, saying they're afraid of death, and then wanting to die quickly. Of course, Jiang Ling also understands their logic: because they want to be human, they don't want to become monsters, and because they're human, they're afraid of death.

The protective suits can't be taken away after cleaning. They say that while they can be used again, it's cheaper to recycle them directly. Jiang Ling had thought these were disposable items, ready for use, but it turns out they can be recycled in this world.

"I still have to take this brother to the infirmary. He has had a reaction and just vomited. So let's say goodbye now!" Old Chen helped Wang An, Jiang Ling and the other two to say goodbye. They had just come out of a sensor door.

The induction door at the personnel entrance is like the metal detection door in some important places, except that it can also detect the surface radiation of people passing through.

"Beep!" The machine made a sound when Jiang Ling passed through.

"Are you okay?" Jiang Ling's body stiffened for a moment. She didn't remember hiding anything on her body.

"It's okay. This sound is just a warning. The radiation in your body exceeds the standard. But in fact, everyone who comes back from here will exceed the standard." Huang Yun comforted her and took the suitcase that Jiang Ling was holding.

The group continued along the passage, and after turning a few forks in the road, their view gradually widened. This was a population and material distribution center on the ground floor. It looked a bit like an old underground parking lot, but the facade was much higher, at least it could easily accommodate trucks several meters tall.

"How is it? Pretty spectacular, right?" The three of them stood at the entrance of the passage for a few seconds, and Huang Yun boasted to Jiang Ling with some pride.

"It's very special!" Jiang Ling saw a place in the center of the place surrounded by several tin houses, which looked like a service desk. She pointed and asked, "What's that for?"

"Let's go~" Huang Yun didn't answer her. He led the other two people to turn right, pass the "service desk", and go straight to a passenger elevator.

"That place was created by the residents. They usually exchange some supplies and equipment here. Yes, they mainly provide information. It's also a place where you can have a hot meal and take a nap. Everyone likes it." Jiang Wenwen grabbed a terminal and shook it in front of Jiang Ling. It seemed that she basically understood the world on the Internet.

"Post stations, service areas or convenience stores, that's what they do. There are four such places at this station, one in each distribution center." Huang Yun said. It would be easier to understand if he described it this way.

Jiang Ling felt that it would be better not to do business with them in the future. Convenience and price are a pair of contradictory friends. You either choose one or choose neither!

. . . . . .

Jiang Ling was still trying to figure out how to handle the "perverts" who approached her, but no one approached her along the way. She was only briefly watched by a group of people in the elevator. These people had all returned from harsh environments, already exhausted, both physically and mentally. Furthermore, the site mostly recruited mature men with families. Jiang Ling felt they were simply curious.

The elevator can't go directly to the second floor. This redundant design has both advantages and disadvantages. Jiang Ling herself doesn't want to comment on this design. It's troublesome for her, but it's hard to say for others.

The atmosphere on the underground floor was noticeably different. The extra people and tents that were originally used to accommodate them were gone. If the managers had kept their word a month ago, these people should have been transferred away in batches.

"Have they left?"

"Yes, but some of them were not allocated rooms in the residential area. So the interim government converted some branch subway lines with less traffic for them, and they were temporarily arranged in the tubes." Huang Yun replied. Her students are mainly children from these families.

The "parking lot" here has been restored to its original purpose, with many military vehicles now being maintained and modified. The personnel transfer corridor has been separated from this area by newly built fences, creating a truly transparent military environment. Several military enthusiasts were crouching on the fences to take photos, while the soldiers in the guard post behind them turned a blind eye.

After another ten minutes of collective onlookers, the three girls, one young and two adults, finally reached the residential area on the second underground floor. This station has five residential areas, each separated by passageways and other functional rooms. Unlike the "low" headroom on the first underground floor, this floor even has three floors of townhouses. The overall appearance is somewhat like a subway waiting area, with a railway track on both sides of these suites. Above the track, pedestrian bridges span the area at regular intervals, giving it a steampunk feel.
