"So what..."
So what? Gary's expectations didn't materialize. He'd assumed they'd be confronted by a few men with malicious intent at gunpoint when they approached the toll booth. In reality, they'd simply opened their car window, revealed their faces, paid a paltry toll, and were then allowed to pass. Perhaps the cashier, seeing the two men in their exoskeleton armor, had forgotten to press the alarm button below the booth, but it was clear that no one had bothered to approach them.
The two quickly reached Bridge No. 4. Through the transparent cylindrical protective shell above the bridge, they could see the scenery outside the Mariner Valley. From a distance, countless bridges spanned both sides. These bridges were generally arched structures, with protrusions beneath their huge spans that looked like illegal buildings. These bridges often had huge holographic advertisements suspended above them. Private aircraft shuttled through these spaces, giving them a rather cyberpunk feel.
11B leaned back against the cushions and said to Gary, "Old Li, you do understand the rules of the world, but you still don't understand the human heart!"
"Even if the con man was colluding with the toll booth manager, he couldn't communicate our information to the frontline staff," he said clearly. "That's easy to understand. Even if his subordinates knew their boss was involved in both the black and white worlds, he couldn't use that as a pretext to order a thorough investigation of a suspected dangerous individual, especially when that individual was legitimately leaving his jurisdiction. He's involved in both the black and white worlds because it benefits him, and it has nothing to do with his position. Therefore, this ambiguous relationship must be kept secret and must not be revealed in any way. After all, who would publicly announce their money-making schemes? And imagine if you were in his position, what would you do?"
"I'll thank the informant, but I won't take any action." Gary stared at the road ahead. "If the person mentioned in the intelligence never returns, then the matter will be dropped. If he does return, it's not too late to send my men to test him, but..." A short green belt suddenly appeared in the middle of the bridge. He instinctively looked there, and in a fleeting moment, he vaguely saw several familiar figures appearing in the opposite lane. Unfortunately, before his brain could react, his mouth couldn't help but finish the rest of the words: "But I will only give you a casual hint..."
"Huh? What's going on up ahead?" 11B was quite alert and immediately stuck close to the car window, but he didn't see anything unusual.
"No. Nothing." Gary pondered for a moment, then decided to let this incident go for now. He knew quite a few people, and perhaps it was just a few who looked alike. Memory loss was common, and with a population of over 34 billion, there was more than enough room for everyone to find half-twins.
"Well, I think our brief cooperation is coming to an end," 11B said. "Just take me to the entrance of Area 114. I can walk the rest of the way on my own."
"Yes, sir!" Gary instantly understood what he meant. "But I still have to remind you—many even-numbered districts have even worse security situations. Remember to be careful!"
"Of course. But you have to lend me your smart pistol for now. I'm really not used to using the 319. Don't forget to write a report when you get back!"
