Chapter 16: Flowers in the Mist

People tend to use known methods to solve unknown difficulties - these dignitaries are no exception.

If you lack firepower, you can make up for it with numbers; if you lack numbers, you can make up for it with firepower.

This isn't a lack of ambition; it's simply that those things are easy to control, and all the data is known and controllable. While they have no advantages, they naturally have no disadvantages either.

These three topics were discussed by the top executives of the Countermeasures Bureau for several hours, but they never mentioned Jiang Ling from beginning to end, as if she was a vase placed on the table.

However, this metaphor is also very vivid. Jiang Ling didn't quite understand what they were discussing, and couldn't even find a way to interrupt them. It would be better for him to shut up obediently, so as not to be kicked out by them.

Jiang Ling was actually very interested in what they were saying, but due to the information asymmetry, she could only listen to the general idea.

She wrote down the nouns she heard for the first time and then turned her attention to observing the participants.

Most of these people were very enthusiastic in the meeting, but there were also a few who hid aside and were lazy.

These were the people who had brought the suitcases earlier. They seemed to have something urgent to do, so they were acting a little impatient. Each of them had a different situation. One of them was always daydreaming. Whenever he thought of something, he would turn around and blink at Jiang Ling, and it was unclear what he was going to do.

The man's hair and beard were already gray. He was about sixty years old, perhaps a little older, but he didn't look old.

His head was a mess, like a sick cat on the roadside.

His pupils were slightly yellow, but he wasn't wearing reading glasses.

The crow's feet at the corners of his eyes had a slight curve, exactly the same as the wrinkles on his clothes.

He was wearing a neat brown suit, but the collar was open, revealing the round-necked short-sleeved shirt underneath.

He must have left in a hurry, and didn't seem like someone who often had time to take care of himself.

Jiang Ling noticed that he was fundamentally different from the others here—he was a genuine, ordinary person. This was truly rare. Jiang Ling had traveled throughout the metropolitan area and had yet to see many living people who hadn't been vaccinated with stabilizers.

His identity must be extraordinary.

Of course, the people here are all pretty much the same.

"...Okay, if you don't have any more questions, you can go back."

Before the chairperson finished speaking, most people stood up, chatting and laughing as they left the meeting room. The room quickly became quiet, with only the last seven people remaining.

"Xiao Liu, you should go and get busy too. I'm enough here."

As the door of the conference room closed, there was one less person in the room.

The man who spoke waited for a few minutes, scanning the faces of several people before finally stopping his gaze on Jiang Ling. He said, "It's getting late, so I'll cut to the chase."

"I'm Fan Yunfei, one of the founders of the Countermeasures Bureau. You can call me Old Fan," the man introduced himself briefly. "I invited you here this time because I want to ask you something and, by the way, ask for a favor..."

Lao Fan winked at the old man who had winked at Jiang Ling before, which made Jiang Ling both angry and amused.

"Just say what you want to say!" she said.

The old man immediately stood up and opened several suitcases on the table.

Inside the box was a ring, a cylinder, a cube and several injections - Jiang Ling was very familiar with them.

"I'm Qin Huang. We've already studied these things. Don't worry too much." said the middle-aged man sitting opposite Lao Ning.

The old man continued, "My name is Huang Jiyuan. Actually, I'm from the same family as your mother! Your family is doing well at the central station. It seems they've reunited with their relatives. You don't have to worry about that."

Lao Ning continued, "These things, including the pre-war 0315 sample, are all related to you, right?"

After the ultimate purpose was revealed, the conference room seemed to freeze. Jiang Ling finally understood that she couldn't escape it after all. However, she never foolishly assumed that others were fools. She had considered this issue before throwing the huge weapon.

It is only a matter of time before someone comes to your door. There are too many smart people in this world.

She nodded without saying a word.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, and the oppressive atmosphere in the room disappeared.

Huang Jiyuan was the first to ask, "Do you know what these things are?"

"No, I don't. I probably know less than any of you."

"So where do they come from?"

"I don't know, system? Aliens? Or 'God'? I can't describe what it is. I've only seen it in my dreams." Jiang Ling answered, holding his head.

The people present looked at each other in confusion, and then someone asked a stupid question: "Do you know its purpose?"

"It claims to be a detector." Jiang Ling threw the question back.

"Let's not talk about this for now. What else has it given you?" Some inspiration popped into Qin Huang's head.

"There are quite a few. But most of them are useless garbage, and the rest are indescribable stuff. I feel...that's just my own feeling! I feel like even it itself doesn't know the value of those things; or rather, our value scale is completely different from its." Jiang Ling pondered for a moment and replied.

"Is it still here?" Qin Huang asked indirectly.

“It’s not here, but it’s always been here.”

"What's the meaning?"

"I see!" Huang Jiyuan slammed the table. "It means we can't find it, but it exists! Is that right?"
