Chapter 6: The New Wasteland

The scenery on both sides of this east-west road is very unique. On the left are rows of high-rise buildings, while on the right are endless rural fields. Although they are all covered with thick snow, Jiang Ling can still imagine what they originally looked like.

In the past, these fields would have been planted with abundant cash crops, and in July, they must have been lush and green. The greenery of the ground blended beautifully with the blue sky, while in the distance, fleeting drones and towering power towers flashed by.

Jiang Ling shook her head. Even if a nuclear war didn't happen, those crops would mutate into something humans had never seen before. If those crops became extremely dangerous, it would be better to destroy them directly. There was nothing wrong with the current pure white world; at least it was still within the scope of cognition.

"...Things have really changed a lot now! They raise mice as cats and dogs, and lizards as horses. Can you believe it? Snails nowadays can produce a liquid similar to milk, and they grow so big." Dong Xie walked in front and boasted to everyone, and by the way, he used his arms to gesture the size of those mutants.

"They're in the experimental area, right? I see there's still no activity in the Green Zone. My guess is that even if we can start breeding those domesticated mutants, we'll have to wait until they've fully developed the Green Zone. It's not like the Green Zone is completely radiation-free right now. After the war, there were days of black snow, and the surface pollution is pretty serious. I think they'll have to scrape off a layer of the ground."

The guide tried to touch his chin through his helmet, but the hard helmet blocked his way.

"No matter how serious it is, it's not as bad as in the city. Those buildings are actually quite nice, but it's a pity the government still arranged an evacuation."

Dong Xie looked to the left and the buildings along the way seemed to be still intact.

"They're probably afraid of the unexploded warheads! I heard there's still a lot of nuclear fuel scattered on the surface, some of which hasn't even been discovered yet! It's said that just one look at it would blind you. If that's true, even I wouldn't want to return to the surface."

Xidu explained, but he also heard it from hearsay.

"Yes, but it's not that serious. If you're accidentally hit, it'll just be amputation. Collect some points and buy a prosthesis. I have channels that can help, so be sure to contact me if you need anything! I give regular customers a 10% discount!" The guide casually changed the subject. "It's just that there are no such weapons on this route, so you can rest assured! Although indiscriminate strikes have been launched in the later stages of nuclear war, they won't drop another one in the fatal zone of a 500,000-ton warhead."

"Is this also a death zone?" Jiang Ling couldn't help but ask.

"No, but it's not far off. This place is more than ten kilometers away from the explosion point, and the survival rate is about 50-50. If you're lucky, you can leave a charred corpse in the heat wave. If you're unlucky, you'll probably melt into the burning car." The guide spoke without restraint, but his mentality was worthy of recognition.

Hearing this, Jiang Ling recalled what she had seen along the way. She suddenly realized that the sides of those buildings had all been baked white. Was this the reason for the silence around them?

Nothing that could be burned was left here.

The journey was boring and serious, with only occasionally someone willing to chat.

The group moved quickly, even though they knew the radiation levels nearby were low. It only took about three hours to walk from one end of the road to the other, which meant it was already lunchtime. Jiang Ling herself was fine, and the two big men looked fine too, but the other ordinary people were barely able to walk.

The guide seemed to know something, and he suddenly shouted, "Hold on a little longer, there's a safe house ahead!"

A little later, a building that looked like it had been built after the war came into view. As they got closer, Jiang Ling finally saw what this "safe house" he had heard of countless times was.

The safe house, shaped like a matchbox, was hidden in a surface parking lot. Surrounded by abandoned vehicles, reduced to charred skeletons, it was painted in urban camouflage, obscuring the snow. The safe house was elevated on a platform. Its roof was equipped with numerous devices, which were inactive and activated only when someone entered.

"Wow~ How did you find this military safe house?" Dong Xie knew a little about those things.

"One of my channels. There are always some people who like to take risks on the surface." The guide replied.

"Yes, I guess many of your adventurers are in the hospital, and some have been put into lead cans, right?" Xidu teased.

"...at least they helped a lot! Everyone is mortal, we are all mortal." The guide did not deny it.

The interior of the safe house was similar to a pressurized isolation cabin, and the two big men couldn't get in. Jiang Ling only took a look inside through the lead glass from the outside and lost interest.

While these people were resting in the safe house, Jiang Ling leaned against the wall outside and chatted with the two exoskeleton warriors.

"Is your mission confidential?" Jiang Ling spoke first. With the experience from the first time, her tone this time was much more normal.

"It's confidential! But you can know. We are here because of the biological contamination at Station 0204. The Countermeasures Bureau believes it is a mutant. We only know their habits now." The mole was very frugal with his words.

"They are afraid of light and strong alkali. So we asked nearby stations to strengthen the lighting. But there is no way in the tunnel for now. If the pollution cannot be stopped, we will probably have to abandon that site. There are still some soldiers and researchers left there, so we can only evacuate from the surface." The flying squirrel added.
