Chapter 41 Groundhog Day (I)

As the title suggests, many people wish time would stop at this day. Historians of the future will always refer to this day as "that," saying, "Before then, everything was so wonderful!" The only thing they won't describe is this "that." For them, this day is not only unremarkable, but even difficult to describe.

It's April 22nd, marking Jiang Youwei's sixty-fourth day in this world. I gave you two months to accept a completely unfamiliar world and a completely unfamiliar self. Could you do it? You can't. It's impossible! I don't believe people have such a strong ability to adapt. There's a maximum limit to how much shock a person's spirit can withstand. Stimulation that exceeds their capacity will only drive them mad!

Fortunately, Jiang Youwei is controlled by her subconscious mind every day to accept as little new knowledge as possible. Naturally, it is impossible for such a fool as her to fully understand the world.

Almost two weeks had passed since the meteor shower, and this girl had been testing her superpowers almost daily. That "oil film shield"—as she called it—was indeed capable of refracting light. She'd tested it with a laser toy she'd borrowed from a neighbor. Thanks to the national evacuation effort, the neighbor's house was now just like her own; she could come and go as she pleased.

This shield's maximum refraction angle is thirty degrees, calculated with Huang Xiaohong's help. So, theoretically, she could redirect light from behind her through multiple refractions, but that would require immense control. Jiang Youwei could currently only achieve optical invisibility for about ten seconds; any longer would be a nightmare. Of course, she could also deflect lasers aimed at her, which, in a sense, was a refractive prism.

So every time she fired a "psychic beam"—as she called it—at the ruins of the uninhabited residential building in front of her, she would add, "The prism core has been lit." The building was now her personal target, and all the visible windows on it had been shattered by her. Now she was trying to aim at smaller objects, like various bottles and jars.

"Pah! Pah! Pah!" Unlike ordinary laser strikes, the "psychic beams" she fired seemed to have a certain mass, thus carrying kinetic energy. Her human form was much weaker than her "succubus" form, so not only could she only fire one beam at a time, but there was also a ten-second cooldown. These beams were incredibly powerful, enough to melt concrete or steel.

The beams can also be refracted by the shield itself, but each refraction seems to consume some energy. It's a truly beautiful sight, though. The invisible beams emit a glow as they pass through the shield. If there were many beams darting around inside, it would be a truly divine sight!

She'd tried her "succubus" form before, and it was indeed incredibly powerful. She could unleash numerous beams of light at once, and if she didn't mind the energy consumption, she could even create a sun. Yes, she'd melted her neighbor's house, literally. After that, she'd been less cautious about using her powers recklessly. As the saying goes, when gods fight, mortals suffer.

After trying the "sun form", she began to try to concentrate the energy to one point, but the "oil film shield" always distracted her when it bore too many beams of light, so she never succeeded.

. . . . . .

On that same day, the Pearl-believing organization lurking in the Antarctic colony had been working there for years, and now they were finally reaping the rewards. They had dug dozens of kilometers of secret tunnels, the largest of which was large enough for two transport trucks to travel side by side.

Their ideals aren't that extreme; they just want a piece of land to settle down. But current technology makes it impossible for them to obtain what they need without being noticed. Those damn radiation-generating creatures have polluted their original homes, yet they are still driving them to this cruel place with precision.

To realize their ideals, some of them endured humiliation for many years, finally seizing the opportunity to hide a seed of destruction in a rocket mission, which contributed to the global chaos two weeks ago. They believed that this genius must be a messenger of God bestowed by the "Pearl", who brought them the will of heaven.

If all goes well, the "Purifier" they received last week will help them secure a land free of demons and devils, even though this land was a forbidden zone for humans thirty years ago. They are excited now, because after this day, the world will have to acknowledge their power and give them a piece of the pie.

"Hurry, hurry! I remind you again, don't carry any communication tools with you! The core area will automatically detect electromagnetic wave signals. As long as an unmarked chip gets inside, our position will be exposed!" The leader, wearing a set of thermal work clothes lined with metal mesh, urged in a low voice in the dim tunnel.

"Even my mechanical pocket watch is not allowed? This is the last legacy of my wife and children!" A middle-aged man with a vicissitudes of life asked in a low voice.

"Are you sure it's mechanical? You know we can't leave any hidden dangers!"

"Why are you still carrying that? After this, you can have as many wives and children as you want. We'll be heroes!"

The middle-aged man's expression twisted when he heard this. He then raised the pocket watch above his head with both hands. After retracting his hands, he affectionately kissed the photo inside the pocket watch's cover. Finally, he resolutely threw the pocket watch to the ground and stomped it into a discus. "That's right, we will be heroes! Hahaha~"

"Shh, keep your voice down!" A figure entered the dim light of the gas lamp and heard their laughter exceeding the limit of decibels, so he immediately spoke out to remind them.

"Why is it slower than before? How's it going ahead?"

The man made a "clear all the way" gesture and then whispered, "This is the last time, so we're being more careful than usual! The front is the same as before, so watch out for the guards when you pass through!"

"And, take this with you!"

"What is this?" The leader saw that the package contained several bars of gold.

"This is what we've saved over the years, earned from coal mining. You know, sometimes you find gold in the coal mines here. Now it's in your hands, future heroes!"

"We will make good use of them!" the leader answered solemnly, then nodded to the skinny figure blackened by the coal mine.

"Brothers, come closer, let's review this."

"First, we need to use this card to take the elevator, then pass through the guard booth, and then proceed directly to the work area without stopping. The A4 distribution center in the work area contains the secret weapons that other brothers have brought us. After that, we can drive the transport vehicle we've been longing for and load it with the secret weapons all the way to the control center."

"There's no need to say anything more, right? Let's evacuate in groups of two!"

"Oh, and don't forget, no Hebrew!"
