Chapter 18 Amidst the Changes

Country Z is running out of time.

If there are no other surviving civilizations in the outside world, human civilization will soon reach its end.

It will only take one or two generations before people see the end of the world coming.

It will take about 2000 years for biologically modern humans to be replaced by mutants; it will take about 200 years for the last tank of energy to be consumed; and it will take about 20 years for the last replacement parts of the fusion reactor to be exhausted.

It is conceivable that in a few decades, the industrial capacity of the metropolitan area will continue to shrink, and productivity will no longer be able to sustain the needs of the huge population. Chaos will occur, the country will be destroyed, and civilization will regress. . . . .

Why are the people opposite still smiling?

Jiang Ling put down the documents in her hand, and several photos fell out from between her fingers. With the help of the light in the room, she could see the objects in the photos clearly.

One photo appears to have been taken from Earth's surface. In the center of the frame is the rising sun. The sky is cloudless, and the azure atmospheric structure can be clearly discerned. Above the dome, a bright silver river stretches from the sun, passing over the photographer's head, and heading due west.

A photo of the seaside, the boundless sea frozen as far as the eye could see. The blue ice was breaking from bottom to top, and the seawater was being pushed out by some giant object. Below the columnar object were four long red flame tails.

The remaining two were black and white telemetry maps. The terrain was rugged and uneven, with many craters created by meteorites. One of them had obvious man-made structures, but overall there was no sign of life. Clearly, they were not Earth.

What does it mean?

"We were indeed surprised when we saw it!" Fan Yunfei saw her stunned look and knew she had finished reading. "This wasn't our decision. In fact, our Countermeasures Bureau was the last to know. As you know, we are only responsible for matters related to mutants and awakeners. By the time we found out, they had already trained the first batch of astronauts."

"They're planning to abandon this place and go to Mars."

"Huh? What are they going to do?"

"This is part of the first phase of the project. When it's completed, a semi-buried, ultra-large base will be built on Mars. It's located in what was known before the war as Korolev Crater, near the north pole of Mars. This base will be primarily constructed and controlled by artificial intelligence. You're familiar with it: Lin Yi and its children."

The second phase of the project is mainly to find a way to eliminate the killer satellites in low Earth orbit. Most of them are used to attack the Earth, so we can't deal with them alone. If we want to deal with them, we must stand higher than them.

"The third phase of the project is the Mars colonization, which will last for a relatively long time and will ultimately relocate 70% of the population," Fan Yunfei explained.

"There's actually a fourth phase of the project. If everything goes well, we'll try to reopen the lunar base. It's already been weaponized by other countries, so fighting is sure to break out then."

"Have you finished your research? Then I have nothing to say." Jiang Ling said.

"Hmm? Don't you want to know how we're going to make it happen?"

"I don't understand even if you tell me!"

"Let's talk about it!" Huang Jiyuan organized his words. "We can simulate overload, supergravity, and low-gravity environments here, but we can't simulate zero gravity, so..."

"So we came to you!" Ning Weihe interrupted.

Without waiting for Jiang Ling to speak, Qin Huang continued, "We have three candidates. You know the other two. It's obvious that you are the most suitable."

"Wait, wait!" Jiang Ling finally found a chance to speak. "Is this the reason you're showing off your true intentions? Are you using me as a tool?"

"At least you won't lose out." Ning Weihe picked up the teacup, thought for a moment, then put it down and said, "There might be a lot of zero-gravity work in the future. It would be a good opportunity to learn more professional knowledge now and enrich yourself."

"Then... okay then!"

"You'd better be mentally prepared. The task is still very heavy. You have to provide spiritual power for at least four hours a day, and it must be stable during the duration. There can be no interruptions!"

"That's it? I thought it was open 24 hours a day. Ahem, if there's nothing else, can I leave now?"

Everyone looked at each other and said nothing more.

After a while, Jiang Ling returned to the dormitory, but in just a few hours, a new day of testing and training would begin.

Tang Wanzhou still showed no sign of returning, so Jiang Ling had nothing more to do. She threw herself onto the bed, covering her head with her arms, lost in thought.

Soon, the objects around her seemed to lose the earth's gravity and slowly floated up from their original positions.

The light from outside shone in through the window, and the extremely weak light pressure generated the initial driving force.

The odds and ends on the table were spinning in mid-air, circling around each other and colliding.

The unfinished tea flows out of the cup and condenses into a string of water droplets under the influence of surface tension.

The dried paintbrush is like a spaceship, traveling through this special meteorite belt.

When the spacecraft passed by the water droplets, the hydrophilic surface absorbed them. The water droplets gradually increased and finally accumulated at the center of mass of the brush, forming an abstract ocean.

Jiang Ling's forehead was covered in sweat. Honestly, controlling these things was incredibly difficult. Using psychic powers to resist gravity was difficult enough, but controlling liquids was the hardest. Solids at least had a center of gravity, but liquids didn't, at least not in small quantities.
