"Hurry, hurry, hurry!" Li Gang ran with the tactical terminal tucked under his arm. He pulled Jiang Ling over and said, "Move quickly! Their attack is coming!"
As soon as the words fell, countless steel needles and iron rain brushed past their backs, and the observation and aiming equipment mounted at the highest point was riddled with holes in an instant.
Jiang Ling was knocked to the ground by Li Gang on the snow, and the soft snow was pressed into a human-shaped depression by the two of them.
"How many did you hit just now?" Li Gang couldn't stop shaking, the effect of his adrenaline had not yet faded.
"Three, but only two were killed. The shield of the remaining one deflected the trajectory of the bullet." Jiang Ling replied. The mutants reacted very quickly. The moment she hit the first unlucky guy, the remaining two had already reacted.
"The scanner's broken! Quickly use your fire control system to check the situation on the other side!" Li Gang pulled a data cable from his tactical terminal and connected the interface to the smart backpack on Jiang Ling's back. His proficiency was far superior to Jiang Ling's. The robotic arm deftly lifted the rifle into position, and the latest image appeared on the tactical terminal.
Along with the two mutants, a number of controlled soldiers fell to the ground. It was clear that the mutants couldn't control more soldiers at once. After figuring out what was happening, the remaining group retreated into the hollow, a move they had planned.
Those soldiers who fell to the ground were not dead, but in Jiang Ling's perception, the light spots representing them were becoming weaker.
"We must speed up. What should we do next?" Jiang Ling said in the communicator.
"Wait, now we can only wait for their attack." Li Gang gradually calmed down.
"They are almost frozen to death. Are you sure you want to wait?" Jiang Ling told him what she had sensed.
"...At this point, there's no way we can save them." Li Gang was silent for a moment. "They've probably been starving for a day or two, and those bandits certainly won't give them food. By the way, do you have any way to control them to crawl further away?"
"Let me try." Jiang Ling attempted to remotely control the people who had fallen to the ground. She had initially tried to get them to stand up, but after failing several times, she opted for the most practical method. Since she couldn't control the entire body, she could just control one hand or one leg!
Then a strange scene unfolded. The immobilized soldiers in the distance suddenly began to twitch, then used their hands or feet to creep about in the darkness, like twisted maggots. Soon, the soldiers reached the limit of Jiang Ling's control. Jiang Ling piled them together as much as possible to minimize their contact with the air.
"Can't you control it like them?" Li Gang's mouth twitched. Such a scene was really unheard of.
The bandits remained indifferent to the retreating soldiers and continued to huddle in the hollow, as if they were discussing countermeasures. They neither fought back nor surrendered.
In the current situation, neither side was at an advantage. Jiang Ling's side was short of time, not only to hold off the gang, but also to rescue the hostages as quickly as possible; while the opposing team was short of space, and the only place they could stay was in this depression.
The two sides remained in a stalemate, and time passed quickly until it got dark.
"When will the support arrive?" Li Gang communicated with the tank as usual. They had agreed before the battle that they must talk every twenty minutes.
"We should have arrived, but they haven't replied to us yet." Zhou Xiangyang's tired voice came. Although he was not in a place where the enemy was directly exposed, he had been tense for several hours. He couldn't rest until all the missiles on the tank were fired.
"These bastards! How could they be so cunning!" Li Gang cursed. "They refused to come out after being beaten. We spent a lot of time thinking up a plan, but in the end we ran into a bunch of cowards."
"Be careful, I think they will break out at night. You'd better use infrared to check." Zhou Xiangyang said in a deep voice.
"I've seen it, there's nothing!" Li Gang looked at the screen again. The scene in the distance was exactly the same as it was twenty minutes ago, except for the cold snow that was displayed in dark purple.
"Are you sure?" Jiang Ling asked. She had already sensed two guys sliding down the snow slope on the west side of the depression.
"What? Where's the birdman?" Li Gang hurriedly used the tactical terminal to control the robotic arm, but there were no abnormal heat signals around. He switched from infrared mode to optical modeāthe distance was completely dark, and almost nothing could be seen.
"Visual lock!"
Li Gang came up with a final solution, a last resort. If all the instruments failed, he would have to rely on his naked eyes to find the enemy.
"Don't move, they haven't discovered us yet." Jiang Ling said in a low voice. The two mutants should be heading towards their previous location.
She sensed the two points of light about a hundred meters apart, moving slowly with a leapfrog tactic. They had clearly learned something from the hostages' memories; the two of them were working together well. She had heard of mutants' learning abilities before, but only now did she understand the despair humans felt when facing them on the battlefield.
Li Gang froze at that, not daring to move. His heart raced in his throat. The most terrifying enemy in the world was the invisible one. He didn't want to die in the darkness, unknowingly, under a blade.
"They are heading towards your telescope. How fast can you shoot?" Jiang Ling quietly asked Li Gang.
"What do you want to do?" Li Gang asked back in the same low voice.
