Chapter 428: Speech in the Tavern
Soon, people from several other ambush points also came back.
"They killed them all. No one was left alive."
The resistance soldiers reported, their eyes full of excitement and excitement.
Even Gwen was a little shocked.
Killing a few cavalrymen in an ambush was not a difficult task, but being able to kill them so cleanly without even making a splash still surprised the resistance forces.
Before, they had thought about resisting under Nora's leadership, but it was difficult to achieve results.
The cavalrymen were wearing breastplates. That armor was a standard military armor with the coat of arms of Count Bazel engraved on it. It could easily block arrows, but when the resistance soldiers took it off, they found it was covered with shocking bullet holes.
This also gave them their first understanding of the muskets in their hands...the bullets that were fired lightly were actually more powerful than the arrows of the most experienced hunters.
People returned one after another, and excitement gradually spread throughout the camp. These refugees from the north had been chased everywhere, and even with Nora's presence, they still did not have the ability to fight head-on.
They were holding their breath.
The road ahead is bleak. Nora died in the battle and they can only hide in the woods to survive. The resistance fighters despair again and again.
And today, they saw hope for the first time.
Even Gwen's eyes were shining. She kept telling herself to be calm, but she couldn't suppress the smile on her face.
They have been wallowing in despair for too long.
The resistance soldiers looked at the muskets in their hands with no more doubt in their eyes, and many of them even had a look of fanaticism on their faces.
"Ms. Gwen? Uh, Ms. Gwen?"
Gwen quickly came back to her senses and saw Isaac calling her with a look of joy on his face.
"Ms. Gwen, this operation was a success. Now it all depends on how the winter wolves react."
Gwen's expression also became serious: "Mr. Isaac, how can we cooperate with you?"
"Don't do anything, just wait and see what happens."
…
Grizzly Town.
In the past two days, people in the town have kept their doors closed for fear of causing trouble.
It was not because of anything else, but because the lord's Winter Wolf Guard was stationed there.
Old Wood wiped the wine glass and sighed in his heart.
His tavern business has not been good since the soldiers came to town.
Not only did the robbers drink up all his wine, they also made a mess of his tavern, smashing countless tables and chairs when they were drunk and acting crazy.
But he still dared not say anything - not only him, but also the people in other towns, just hoped that these people would leave quickly.
Unfortunately, things went against our wishes and these people refused to leave.
"Hey, boss, have a beer!"
Wood looked up and saw a stranger, a slightly thin man standing at the door, looking at the tavern with curiosity.
"Are you the Lord of the Winter Wolf Guard?"
The man at the door was stunned: "No."
"Are you a relative or friend of the Winter Wolf Guard?"
“No.”
Wood said unhappily, "Then you should know that we don't have any wine here any longer!"
The man was stunned for a moment, then chuckled. "If I were a member of the Winter Wolf Guard, how would you answer?"
"I'll ask them if they have any booze for sale - they've taken all the booze from the whole town now!"
Old Wood angrily threw the rag in his hand onto the table: "Look, my wine glass has been wiped until it is cleaner than a new one. If there is anything cleaner in the pub, it is only the wine barrels in the basement!"
The people in the room responded immediately, and the cups in their hands were filled with tea - if soaking water with the leaves of the winterling fruit can be considered tea.
The man looked at the complaints in the room with a smile and asked casually, "What food do you have for sale now?"
"Only black bread, five leos a pound!"
"Five rios and a pound!? Why don't you go and rob? One rio and five pounds is too expensive for me!"
The man said loudly.
"You think it's expensive, but I think it's too expensive too. Bread at 5 rios a pound is always available. Boy, you're lucky today. No one has come to collect the grain these days, so you can buy some bread on the black market."
"How could this happen? I heard this year is a good year."
"Alas, it's still those soldiers!"
"What soldiers? They are bandits!"
"That's right, I heard that many stores in this town have been robbed!"
"Nowadays, families with daughters keep their doors closed all day and dare not go out. Those beasts are capable of anything!"
The originally quiet pub suddenly became noisy and bustling as if it was a powder keg that had been lit.
Old Wood was a little worried. He wanted to persuade the guests to keep their voices down, but he happened to see the short man sticking his head out to take a look and then casually closed the door of the tavern.
He gave Old Wood a reassuring look.
Old Wood was actually not very reassured, but he really wanted to curse Winter Wolf, so after a moment's hesitation, he joined the drinkers in their condemnation.
The drinkers cursed heartily. Although they were drinking tea, their faces were all red. They really had a lot of resentment.
"Boss, give me a pound of bread." The little man squeezed to the front of the counter.
Old Wood was stunned: "A pound of bread costs five rios. Are you so rich, young man?"
"I don't have any money!" the man sighed. "But what can I do? I have to survive. The money I worked so hard to earn can't even buy bread!"
The room gradually became quiet, and angry looks appeared on people's faces, but they could only helplessly pour the bitter "wine" into their mouths.
"I work hard for a week and only earn twenty leos. If I exchange it all for bread, it's only four pounds! I can eat four pounds of bread in one day, and I will be hungry for the other six days!"
"And even bread at five rios a pound is not something you can buy whenever you want."
"What can we do? We can only come here to drink!" A table of guests in the distance placed their cups heavily on the table.
"Oh, it's not wine, it's tea. Well, everyone knows that it's just some rotten tree leaves soaked in water!"
"Damn it, how the hell did the North become like this!"
"We should drive those bandits out!"
The people in the room became more and more excited. Old Wood's face turned red. He slammed the table and said, "I still have a barrel of wine. I hid it secretly. I was going to die. I'll take it out now. Let's have another drink!"
People in the tavern quickly distributed the drinks. Although each person only had one glass, it was real wine after all.
Everyone's face was flushed red, and it was hard to tell whether it was because of the alcohol or excitement, or maybe both.
The short man jumped onto the bar with a glass in his hand: "Friends, we can't let Old Wood spend this barrel of wine for nothing, let's each take out some Rio!"
After saying that, he threw all the coins in his pocket into it.
Old Wood was stunned, and said hesitantly: "This, this may be a bit too much."
"What's the use of more Leo? We can't buy bread or wine. As long as the winter wolf cubs are here, we will be hungry and cold for a day!"
The people cheered so loudly that it almost blew the roof off.
They threw coins into the wooden barrel, and the short man didn't care how much, he just picked up the barrel to catch them.
Soon, everyone had invested money, and many people even emptied their pockets.
They looked at each other and suddenly had a strange feeling.
They had nothing at this moment, yet they seemed to have more.
The man threw the barrel aside, letting the coins inside fall to the ground, but no one cared.
"Everyone, I just heard some news on the way here."
