Chapter 439: Fellow Villager, Can I Borrow Something?

Chapter 439: Fellow Villager, Can I Borrow Something?

Gwen casually smoothed her long white hair, revealing her slender neck.

"Mr. Isaac, is this really going to work? I don't think the people in this town are going to accept us at all."

It was Isaac's idea to enter the town. Under Gwen's strict request, the resistance did not touch the townspeople's belongings. Instead, they helped them clean the streets and did some small chores.

But even so, no one was interested in their transactions. A few brave people came to take a look, but they didn't buy or sell anything and just left.

This made the resistance forces very discouraged. They might be able to defeat the Winter Wolf, but they still could not gain the recognition of these indigenous people.

They were refugees and had seen this kind of thing many times, but they still felt sad.

Perhaps Isaac had given them too much hope, and now that it had been dashed, they were feeling particularly painful.

Isaac grinned and said, "Don't worry, Miss Gwen. This is also part of the plan. Just because they dislike us now doesn't mean they will do so in the future."

“Have you arranged for someone to do the publicity?”

"Yes."

"The little guy named Leonard?"

"No, it's the Winter Wolf Guard."

Gwen blinked in confusion. "You confuse me. Why would the Winter Wolf Guard promote us? They will definitely not help us."

"They don't need to help us, they don't need to do anything, they're just going to push people towards the resistance."

Isaac's voice was a little low: "The Fire Moths can rebel everywhere not because we have the means to deceive people. We only need to raise the banner of resistance, and the lords will send us followers continuously. If there is no oppression, who is willing to risk their lives to resist?"

"As for Leonard, did you tell him what happened?"

"Yes, sir. The speech in the tavern made my blood boil. He is really a master at stirring people up."

Isaac shook his head. "What incited people was the five-rio-a-pound bread. He just stated the facts. Don't worry. The people in the town are unwilling to accept the resistance now, but they will miss us after we leave."

Gwen nodded, not quite understanding.

In the next few days, the resistance forces went to the remaining towns one by one. After they arrived there, they cleaned the streets, helped rebuild houses, set up stalls for fair trade, but basically gained nothing.

People resist them, and no matter how many good things they do, the looks they receive are always wary.

But the resistance fighters did not make any excuses, they just quietly did their own thing, and even those insiders disguised as merchants did not take any action and just let the people in the town release their hostility.

And every time not long after they left, the Winter Wolf cavalry would chase them to the town, only to find with gloomy faces that they had come up empty-handed.

They were clearly cavalry, and the opponents were resistance troops who could only walk, so they were the lagging side.

The seriousness of the doubts raised by the people in the town made them even more angry.

When these Winter Wolf Guard soldiers went out, they were still wearing their distinctive armor, but when they came back, not only were their numbers reduced by half, but many of them also had injuries.

As for throwing away weapons and armor, there is no need to mention it, as few of them were intact.

The people in the town didn't understand what fighting was, but they could still tell who was winning and who was losing.

But before they could gloat over their misfortune, they were brutally suppressed by the Winter Wolf Guard.

The Winter Wolf Guard may not be able to deal with the resistance, but they can bully their own people.

They didn't care about anything and smashed open the doors, tied up the people in the houses with ropes, tied them to the backs of horses, and dragged them all the way to the square, leaving a trail of blood.

The rest of the people were also driven out and trembled in front of sabers and muskets.

"You lowly people betrayed the Earl and teamed up with the White Crows to murder the Winter Wolf and your guardian!"

The wolf leader walked slowly in the square, with a new scar on his face, but this time it was not glory, but shame.

Behind him were several makeshift wooden poles with many bloody bodies hanging on them.

Many people's bodies were even incomplete. They were dragged all the way here, and only half of their bodies were left when they reached the square. However, they were not dead yet and kept wailing intermittently.

"This is the fate of a betrayer!!"

The Winter Wolf soldiers shouted in unison, causing many of the townspeople to collapse to the ground in fear.

The leader wolf looked at the hung townspeople with a gloomy expression.

This defeat was too tragic, and he had to give an explanation to Count Basil, so he could only use the heads of these people.

If the alpha wolf in the pack shows even a hint of weakness, new challengers will rip his throat out and he will have no way to stop it - the alpha wolf thought.

The winter wolves behind him gradually regained their confidence amid the blood and wailing. This was the battlefield they were familiar with, and it was fine as long as the blood didn't flow from their own bodies.

The townspeople looked at them with fear and hatred, but the winter wolves didn't care at all.

In the North, these people are like weeds growing in the wild. They will grow if left alone, and they will also grow if cut with a knife. Since their heads are of some use, they will be taken off.

Even if everything is burned down and the roots are wiped out, the worst that can happen is that some of the White Crow refugees will be left behind.

The North is desolate, but there is never a shortage of weeds.

The leader wolf silently counted the heads hanging on the pole and frowned.

The deputy next to him came over immediately: "Sir?"

"This is far from enough. What we need is a victory, a big victory. Only in this way can we live up to Lord Bazel's regard for us."

He glanced at the people kneeling in the square and shook his head: "Go to the other two towns. There are more traitors and more heads there."

The Winter Wolves filed out. Although their equipment and armor were not complete, their morale had been restored.

They just need to rest up, and the resistance will have nothing to fear.

The cavalry left, leaving behind only a devastated square and wailing residents, with headless bodies thrown everywhere.

After an unknown amount of time, the people in the town helped each other to stand up. They gathered the bodies, pulled them to the cemetery on carts and buried them together.

Most of the bodies were bloody and it was impossible to tell who was who. Many of them also had body parts, so it was impossible to piece them together. Therefore, they could only dig a big pit and pile the bones together.

Blood and flesh mixed with grief were buried by shovelfuls of soil, and people sobbed from time to time.

People stood in front of the pit for a long time. This time, no one gave a speech, no one encouraged people, no strong liquor was poured into their mouths, only a muddy ground full of blood.

They stood there in silence, like silent tombstones.
