Chapter 470 I Can Go Too
Twenty people. No, there were more than thirty soldiers standing near the city gate.
These soldiers were fully armored, holding giant tower shields as thick as door panels in their hands, and were standing at the door ready for battle.
These soldiers were all tall and were obviously specially selected elites. They had already discovered the resistance army and were beginning to form a formation.
Gwen looked back at his men. They were all panting and a little tired - riding a horse was very physically demanding, especially since they were not very skilled and had to put more effort into controlling the horses.
It's over.
There's no way to get through this.
If you can't rush through, you can't occupy the inner city. If you can't occupy the inner city, you can only retreat, otherwise you will be trapped. And retreating means handing your life to the winter wolf. You can only pray for good luck or that the opponent is merciful enough.
Bone Crow, please have mercy on your people. Gwen's mouth was dry and cold sweat broke out on his back.
She didn't know what to do for a moment - maybe she could try now, if Isaac was nearby, there might be some hope with his help, but if he was not there, she would just be committing suicide.
Those soldiers holding huge shields did not hold any weapons, but through the gaps in the shields one could vaguely see that they also had muskets on their waists.
Gwen hesitated for only a moment before the officer on the other side gave the order: "Soldiers, raise your shields and defend the gate!"
Should we charge? If we want to fight, we can only do so now. If the enemy reorganizes their formation and fills the gap in the gate, the resistance army will not have any hope at all.
Gwen gritted his teeth and was about to give an order when a voice suddenly came from the center of the opposing formation: "We can't go to the castle! There are not many defenders in the castle, and we can't defend it at all!"
The soldiers who were about to move towards the gate paused.
"Hurry! Protect me, raise your shields, don't move the fucking gun, don't you see the guns coming from the opposite side? Block them!"
Gwen's eyes lit up. The man who was speaking opposite him seemed to be of high status, a noble. The soldiers who had just received the order were forcibly stopped by him, and the formation immediately became chaotic. The shields raised by the soldiers blocked their vision, and a gap appeared at the gate.
"Resistance fighters, follow me and charge! The brothers behind us will be here soon, just charge forward!" Gwen shouted immediately, and without aiming, he raised his rifle and fired in the direction where the voice came from.
The soldiers behind him followed suit, shouting and rushing forward while firing, making the situation even more chaotic.
The voice just now rang again, with a somewhat exasperated tone: "Quick, protect me and retreat from the west gate. Don't fucking tell me this. The other side is shooting. What if they hit me? Are you the superior or am I the superior? Listen to me, no shooting, retreat!"
The commander on the opposite side had a grim look on his face as he watched Gwen and his men rush into the castle, then he gritted his teeth and led his soldiers to retreat.
Gwen felt her heart pounding, and her back was covered in cold sweat. She actually scared the enemy away just like that! She left half of her men to guard the gate, and with the rest of them, she kicked open the castle gate.
The castle was just as the man said, with few guards and only many servants. The few soldiers almost surrendered at the first sight of the enemy. Instead, the servants put up some resistance under the organization of the butler, but were quickly defeated by Gwen and others.
The main force of the resistance army arrived a little later. They encountered many guards along the way. Some of them surrendered, and some fought to the death. However, the number of these troops was too far behind that of the resistance army, so they did not cause any splash.
Even when Gwen stood in the castle's hall, watching the resistance forces searching the castle, she was still a little incredulous.
The castle was taken just like that? Was she just a little too lucky? And where was Isaac?
"My Lord Earl, we are surrounded." The commander looked a little grim.
He was a close guard under Basel and had always been relied upon by Basel. But today, the Earl did not allow him to take command and insisted on breaking out with his personal guards.
"Ignore them and keep going towards the city gate."
Basel had a blank expression on his face and gave no explanation, which made people puzzled.
"My Lord, they have muskets, they"
"Raise your shield!"
Bazel shouted, and the Frost Guards raised their shields with both hands.
Such a huge tower shield would seriously hinder the soldiers from using other weapons, and therefore these Frostland Guards only carry pistols and do not even have swords.
There were sporadic gunshots from the resistance army, and lead bullets hit the shields, making crisp sounds.
The tower shield made of unknown material successfully blocked the resistance army's shooting. The shield was very large, and there was no gap at all after the soldiers raised it in a staggered manner. This round of shooting did not cause any casualties.
"Lead the shields - load the powder!" Basel shouted again, and the soldiers put down their raised shields, stood on the ground, turned around and leaned on the shields, and used their free hands to start loading the short-handled muskets at their waists.
They pulled a small paper bag from their pockets, bit the opening to tear it open, and then poured the contents into the barrel of a musket.
Bazel paused for a moment, then spoke again, "Press firmly—load!"
The soldiers placed their muskets against the side of the tower shield, where there was an iron bar that could be used to hang objects and also serve as a cleaning rod.
Watching the soldiers around him loading their lead bullets, Basel shouted without hesitation: "Fire!"
There was a reserved depression on the shield, and the soldiers placed their muskets against it and then opened fire.
A cloud of smoke rose up, and several resistance soldiers fell.
"Raise your shield!"
Seeing that the other side had also completed reloading, Count Bazel gave orders again, and the soldiers raised their tower shields to block another wave of shooting.
The two sides are not far apart and can see each other's situation.
The resistance soon discovered that this group of soldiers was simply a mobile fortress. Their specially made tower shields could block the shooting from this side, while the resistance could only run for their lives when facing the shooting from the opposite side.
How to fight this? After several attempts, the resistance army reluctantly gave way. They also found that this group of people seemed to have no intention of fighting and just wanted to break out from here.
Soon Basel's guards arrived at the city gate, opened it and left quickly.
The resistance looked at their figures, hesitated for a moment, and gave up the pursuit.
What is more important for them now is to clear out the remaining defenders in the castle rather than fighting to the death with this group of enemies that appeared out of nowhere.
After leaving Sledding Castle, the commander of the Frost Earth Guard, Bazel's deputy, couldn't help but ask: "Sir, we were able to defend the castle just now."
Bazel looked at his deputy who had followed him for many years with a half-smile: "What's the point of keeping it?"
The adjutant was stunned.
Bazel looked into the distance. "We don't need a peaceful North. If the resistance is willing to muddy the waters, that's great. If they can't do it, I can even help. Go to Octavia's territory."
"The Archduchess?"
"Yes, tell her that my team was defeated by the resistance and ask her for help. Remember to be high-profile."
The adjutant scratched his head in confusion: "What about you? Are you going to your mansion to mobilize the troops now?"
"No, I want to go to the woods of the Canary Mountains." Bazel's face was a little sinister: "They can attack my castle, why can't I go to their camp to take a look?"
"And we can also see whether the rumors about Ms. Nora are true."
