Chapter 504: Evacuation Begins
"Sister Gwen, are we really leaving here?"
Grisha whispered as he watched the resistance soldiers coming and going and packing up their equipment.
"Yes, Grisha, we are going to Castel. There will be no more wars, everyone will have enough to eat, and children like you can go to school."
"Really? But we have come all the way from White Crow to the North, and there seems to be no difference. Everyone's life is difficult, and even the lords are equally bad. Castel, will it be different?"
Gwen pursed her lips. She wanted to comfort Grisha, but looking at the boy's clear eyes, she didn't know how to start.
Castel, will it really be that good? Will it be another North, another endless oppression, another endless war, and another forever of resistance? Gwen didn't know.
She thought for a while, then squatted down and looked at the boy level.
"Grisha, I don't know what Castel is like. I have never seen him."
"But I have many friends who say that Castle is a great place and our real home. Nora, Isaac, Jeremiah, Ken. I believe them. I am willing to believe my friends, just as you are willing to believe me."
She stroked the boy's head gently, her eyes full of longing: "I also want to go to Castel. I heard it is very close to us and we will be there soon. I really want to go and see it."
"Sister Gwen, let's go to Castel together!"
"Okay, let's go together!"
Gwen laughed out loud, and Grisha also grinned, happy from the bottom of his heart.
The happiest moment is looking up in the darkness at hope that is within reach.
Grisha felt warm in his heart.
Gwen's armor is cold and hard, but when you lean on it, you feel warm.
"Gwen, how's the gathering going? How soon can we set off?"
Gwen stood up and looked at Isaac who was approaching.
"It should be possible today, but by the time we set out it will be afternoon, and it will be dark soon. Do we really have to travel overnight?"
"Yes, it will be too late if we leave later." Isaac's face was gloomy. "I just contacted the people of the Ash Alliance in other towns. An army is on the way. They are flying the banner of Grand Duke Longya. Judging from their route, they are likely to come to find us. If we leave tomorrow, we may be blocked here by them. That would be really troublesome."
"Grand Duke Dragonfang?" Gwen pulled out a metal barrel from his waist and unscrewed it to reveal a thick piece of parchment, which was a detailed map of the North.
The northernmost frontier of the empire is the Canary Mountains, which can be seen from afar from Sleddingburg. The resistance is nearby.
The southernmost part of the north is the territory of Grand Duke Longya, to the west is the Duchy of Octavia, and to the southeast is the territory of Grand Duke Alvarez. Hunter's family is here.
"Castel's railway has been built to the Grand Dukedom of Alvarez. We are in the Earldom of Bazel and need to evacuate to the southeast."
Isaac pointed south of Sleddingburgh.
"The army of Grand Duke Longya still has two days to go. We are heading southeast, and they are heading due south. If we set off tomorrow, we will most likely meet them halfway. There are many plains in the north, and fighting on the plains is almost the worst scenario."
"You said before that Castel would have support coming. If we just hold on to Sleddingburg and wait for help, how confident can we be?"
"It's difficult." Isaac's voice was a little low.
"Although several Grand Dukes were encroaching on Bazel's territory before, they were more or less under the pretext of fighting us, but Grand Duke Longya forced his army to set foot on Bazel's land. This is extremely offensive. No one would say anything if Bazel directly started a war."
"This can only mean one thing - he got a little angry and lost his mind."
Gwen looked at Isaac in surprise: "Does he have a grudge against us? How come I don't know?"
"It is said that his young son died with the coalition forces. This made him mad and he decided to seek revenge on us."
"They took the initiative to attack us, and people died, but he felt angry and wanted to take revenge at all costs?" Gwen said in disbelief, her face gradually turned red, and her eyes were filled with anger.
"Yes, and it wasn't even the resistance who killed him. His youngest son and the coalition led by Viscount Frey were destroyed by Castel. But people died anyway, so Archduke Longya came to us for an explanation."
"You want an explanation from us? Oh, how many people from the resistance army died at the hands of the coalition forces, and he never cared about it at all. Now that his son has died, he's asking for an explanation? His son's life is a life, but ours is not?"
Gwen clenched his fists, and the iron plates on his armor creaked as he was squeezed. The depression and pain of the past six months, and the blood feud of countless companions who left, now turned into anger that he could not suppress.
Grisha, who was standing aside, took two steps forward silently, and his wooden prosthesis knocked on the stone ground, making a crisp sound.
"That's not all." Isaac sneered. "No one from the coalition forces could escape. The news shouldn't have leaked out, or at least it shouldn't have been discovered so quickly. But there's an extraordinary way that can deduce the reason out of thin air."
He gritted his teeth and said, "[Investigator]"
The real blood feud is between the Fire Moths and the Candlelight Society.
The two originally came from the same sect, but their doctrines are completely opposite. Candlelight collects and seals knowledge, while the Fire Moth uses its life to explore.
The Candlelight Society's pursuit of the Fire Moth is never-ending, and the means of suppression are extremely bloody.
Who among the Fire Moths didn’t have a few friends killed by the Candlelight Society?
Therefore, even though the mother-in-law acted recklessly and killed many investigators, Isaac just cleaned up the mess quietly and never tried to stop her by force.
If the mission wasn't more important, he would also like to try out whether the Dragon Breath Cannon is effective.
Isaac and Gwen looked at each other and saw the raging anger in each other's eyes.
"Grand Duke Longya's army is large in number. If he is determined to attack, we will not be able to defend."
No matter how good the expeditionary force is at fighting, they still have to travel on foot. They have to gather first from the territory of Grand Duke Alvarez, and then march over, which is simply too late.
"We can only leave as quickly as possible and try to retreat to the southeast. Although this journey is not long, it is very dangerous. The Dragon Fang Guild is chasing us closely from behind. If we are a little slower, they will catch up with us. However, we have to cross almost the entire territory of Alvarez."
Isaac took a deep breath.
"We need unity, we need good luck, and we need to move from one victory to another."
