Chapter 811 The War Fortress Makes its First Appearance
The cavalrymen's valiant success saved the Storm Squad a lot of trouble. If this squad of more than a dozen cavalrymen had scattered and fled, it would have been really difficult for them to chase after them.
"How dare they charge up here? Do they really think flesh and blood can stop steel?" Gwen's voice was incredulous.
"Not necessarily. These cavalrymen are just ordinary people, and we disguised our actions at night. Perhaps they didn't see us, but only heard that there were enemies ahead and were preparing to use the advantage of their horses to rush over and control the situation. If things don't go well, they can turn around and leave."
The members of the Rampage Squad are all superhumans, capable of seeing easily at night. With the help of an old woman who specializes in reconnaissance, everything on the battlefield is almost transparent to them.
But the ordinary cavalry could only hear Galahad's roar; by the time the engines roared, it was too late.
In the past, cavalry might have been able to withdraw in time due to their agility, but now...
Although a single self-propelled artillery piece weighs more than ten tons, they are more agile than cavalry on the battlefield.
This is why Galahad organized not traditional scout squads, but rather a berserker squad composed of self-propelled artillery.
If you're not discovered, sneak away quietly. If you are discovered? Well, let's see if you can catch up first!
"Full speed ahead, make a big commotion!" Galahad shouted, turning the loudspeaker up to maximum and firing a shot directly at the distant camp's fire.
They were there to scout, and when they couldn't hide, disrupting the situation was more useful.
And since it's nighttime, the chaos might be even more exaggerated than imagined.
"Let's give them a volley first!"
boom!
The artillery opened fire, but because they were firing while moving, only Galahad's shot successfully hit the camp; the rest missed.
But that was exactly the effect we wanted. The explosions all around successfully masked the sound of artillery fire, and the bright flashes from the explosions made it impossible for the enemy to pinpoint their exact location.
The Papacy's military camp erupted in chaos, filled with cries and wails, threatening to break out.
The sudden artillery barrage in the middle of the night was unprecedented in the world, and the location was already some distance from the front line, with many of the Empire's soldiers having never even seen artillery or tanks.
Many people took this as a punishment for the sacred candlelight; devout believers knelt in prayer, while the timid ran around. Priests chanted prayers, but no one maintained order.
The mother-in-law kept reporting the situation in the distance, and Galahad was delighted to hear this and immediately decided to fire a few more shells over there.
Unfortunately, this chaos began suddenly and ended just as suddenly.
A group of priests in white robes trimmed with gold suddenly appeared in the military camp. They did not chant any prayers, but simply stood there, and a white radiance slowly spread in all directions.
The source of that radiance was the white candles they held in their hands. The candlelight did not sway in the wind, but burned steadily, and anyone who saw it would gradually calm down.
"Sigh, we've even brought out the [Moon Candle], it seems we won't make much of a splash here. Let's move on." Galahad sighed, leading the group in a different direction as they continued on their way.
The previous shelling ignited many things, and the chaotic scene perfectly concealed all their movements.
But the priests in the camp had eyes that seemed to pierce through the night, staring intently at Galahad and his group as they walked in the distance.
The priests were surrounded by kneeling believers, while the soldiers were simply praying.
Suddenly, a rumbling sound came, and several steam tanks appeared on the open ground and then disappeared into the darkness.
No one guided them, yet the tanks still followed the direction of the Madman Squad and drove away.
"Galahad, something's wrong!" Gwen shouted from the ranks as she zigzagged, trying to dodge the shelling.
"I know! But now we can only keep pushing forward!"
Galahad is already in a bit of a mess.
The situation took a sharp turn for the worse after the initial sneak attack. The ordinary soldiers were easy to deal with; a few cannon shots in the dark were enough to terrify them. But gradually, steam tanks joined the pursuit and interception of them.
Despite the complete darkness, these cumbersome steam tanks could accurately locate them, and although the falling shells often couldn't keep up with their speed, they never went in the wrong direction.
"Damn it, are they those [investigators]?"
"Impossible!" the old woman denied without hesitation. "I've dealt with investigators my whole life, and I know their capabilities well. Nighttime investigation is definitely not their forte!"
"Damn it, why were they able to target us?!"
"Alright, enough of this nonsense!" Galahad stopped the argument. "We have excellent mobility. As long as we take cover, these long-range shelling attacks pose little threat to us. Now, we need to keep advancing!"
The group agreed on this point.
The Papal troops in the rear have been alarmed. They absolutely cannot turn back now; their only way out is to quickly advance!
"Look what that is!" Gwen suddenly exclaimed, and the others rushed to look.
Suddenly, a mountain lit up in the darkness.
Like a galaxy upside down planted on the ground, a whole expanse of bright firelight, swaying and staggering, stood up.
It looks like an upside-down basin, but it has sharp edges, jagged corners, and slender protrusions, giving it a somewhat gothic feel.
“No wonder some people say it looks like a standing church,” Gwen murmured, then added excitedly, “Is that the War Fortress?”
“Yes, that’s it.” Galahad’s tone was somewhat complicated. It was this suddenly appearing war fortress that interrupted Her Majesty the Empress’s offensive. If it weren’t for this, they would have already reached the Rhine by now.
"Stop, fire one precise shot, then continue maneuvering!"
The self-propelled artillery pieces slammed on their brakes, slowed to a stop, and immediately opened fire. Before the enemy could retaliate, they began to move forward again.
"Three shots hit!"
The massive war fortress made no dodging movements, and Nora even doubted whether its size supported rapid movement.
Fireballs exploded on the outer wall of the fortress. The men fell silent, waiting for the smoke and dust to clear so they could observe the effects of the shelling.
A while later
"hiss"
"No effect at all?"
"It seems so; at least this round of shelling failed to penetrate."
"Mother-in-law, can you see the specific details?"
The group looked at the old woman, whose expression was unusually solemn as she stood atop the turret.
"If you want to penetrate even minor scratches, you'd need at least ten more shellings like this!"
