Chapter 16: Unlucky

Uncle Wang was very helpful in asking us which bus to take to the city center, etc.

What’s even more convenient is that Uncle Wang’s family just opened a small store, which was just set up by his son.

Hua Youcai bought soy sauce, vinegar, matches and candles. Uncle Wang was very happy to be given such a treat.

The three of them walked quite fast, and they were sweating slightly when they arrived in the town.

There were quite a few people along the road, some were walking, some were riding bicycles, some were riding tricycles, and some were riding ox carts.

The big market here is just like the one in my hometown, with stalls set up on both sides of the main street in the town.

They sell various New Year goods such as couplets and firecrackers, and the villagers grow their own vegetables, the most common of which are cabbage and radishes.

The market is not very big and it ends after a short walk.

Hua Youcai went to the post office to send a telegram to his elder brother to let him know that he was safe.

Let’s write the letter after the new year.

Chinese cabbage costs three cents per pound, and white radish and carrots cost two cents each.

Hua Youcai carried a basket of cabbages, Hua Fangfang carried a basket of radishes, and Hua Yuanyuan carried couplets, firecrackers, and candies in her cloth bag.

In the morning, we went to the market. In the afternoon, Hua Yuanyuan assigned a task to her father and younger brother.

That is to go to the landlord's house, borrow a bicycle and learn to ride a bike.

A bicycle is a valuable item. What if people don’t want to lend it to you?

Hua Fangfang was very worried that she wouldn't be able to learn to ride a bike if she didn't borrow it.

Hua Yuanyuan wanted her father and younger brother to learn how to ride a bike first, then go to the city to buy one and ride it home directly.

Of course she knows how to ride, and she had to buy a bicycle and pretend to learn.

Hua Fangfang's words reminded her that this was not actually necessary.

Can bicycles be taken on buses at this time?

If you can’t do it, just push it back and learn while pushing. It’s not easy for an adult to learn to ride a bike.

Hua Youcai thought about asking, as he would need a piece of meat, so if they didn’t lend it to him, forget it.

I took a bag of raw melon seeds and peanuts, all grown at home.

When they arrived at Uncle Wang's shop, Hua Youcai mentioned the matter of borrowing the car, and Uncle Wang agreed readily.
