The man pulled out a steelyard balance from behind his waist, and the man next to him handed him a weight. After weighing the food, they made way for him.
The man's eyes darted greedily toward the car: "Want to park it? It's not expensive, and I can even take you to the designated exit."
Bu Yi shook his head: "No need."
Xia Chuhe then parked the car in the farm, and the group of eight continued on foot.
Bao'er was held in Bu Yi's arms, which gave her a clear view of what was happening behind them.
The three men respectfully handed most of the food to the young man sweeping the floor, keeping only a little for themselves. Then, the three men sat down again and whispered among themselves.
Bao'er recounted what she had seen, and Bu Yi said, "We need to hurry and get into the city before nightfall, otherwise we'll have no recourse if we get robbed."
Bu Yi and Bao'er explained, "The one sweeping the floor is probably the real gatekeeper. The other three are just lackeys who are just trying to make a living. Don't think that the gatekeepers are insignificant. Actually, it's a big business. If there are any people who don't know what they're doing, they might actually pay them a toll based on a pound per person. Luckily, we didn't flaunt our wealth, and there were a lot of us, otherwise we wouldn't have made it past the gate."
Xia Chuhe recalled his first visit to the Cape Trading Market. Back then, it wasn't the Xintian Gang in power, but rather Scarface's group. It was truly chaotic. Being robbed was commonplace, and even deaths were frequent occurrences.
Further in, scattered low shacks appeared along the roadside. The shacks were made of broken bricks, wood and leaves, and there were men, women and children inside, all of whom looked to be able-bodied.
Some of the shacks had curtains hanging over them, and strange noises could occasionally be heard coming from inside.
Some of the shacks had red ribbons tied to them, and the people living inside looked cleaner, dressed very lightly, and kept giving Xia Chuhe and the others flirtatious glances. These people were both men and women, all with fair skin, dignified faces, and slender figures.
Xia Chuhe and the others walked past without looking to the side.
But someone just kept rushing forward, saying, "Kind ladies and gentlemen, please have mercy and give me some..."
"Have pity on us..."
Bu Yi, Li Qiusheng, and Wang Yan immediately drew their long swords, their faces cold: "Get out of the way, get away, don't block our path."
Bu Yi had warned them beforehand that these people, though seemingly weak and powerless, were actually greedy hyenas. Once they saw meat, they would devour it, leaving not even a bone fragment.
The person who came to probe them got away with it, and with a resentful look on his face, he slowly retreated back to the shack. The others also dared not make any rash moves.
Xia Chuhe sighed inwardly, when suddenly he heard a melodious song: "Fish play among the lotus leaves~ Lost in reverie, there is no way back~"
Although the lyrics are chaotic, the singing is melodious and moving.
The people in the shack seemed to pause for a moment before resuming their actions.
Xia Chuhe looked in the direction from which the singing was coming. In the distance, there was a lonely shack that looked particularly dilapidated.
