Chapter 29 Duck House

The door to the duck differentiation room was locked with an iron lock.

Old Wang pulled a bunch of keys from under his armpit, opened the door, and a blast of humid, stuffy air rushed in.

Because the door was kept closed for a long time, the indoor ventilation was poor.

The main entrance faces a long corridor lined with rooms on both sides. Every two or three meters there is a door, and each door is locked.

Occasionally, cawing and rustling sounds could be heard from inside the room.

Old Wang led the group inside, all the way to number 89.

From number 89 onwards, the doors were never locked.

Old Wang: "Hey, you three meat ducks, stay in this room."

Xia Chuhe took the opportunity to peek into the duck shed.

The duck house is very small, about 15 square meters, with a small window inside that is less than half a square meter in size. The window is located very high up, and a single person cannot climb up to it.

There was a loudspeaker installed by the window.

The four walls are densely covered with large characters in black on a red background. A casual glance reveals words like "effort," "struggle," "responsibility," and "dedication."

Directly opposite the door was a large communal sleeping area, with straw haphazardly spread on it.

On the left are a water trough and a feeding trough. The water trough is only filled with a shallow layer of water, while the feeding trough is full of pellet feed.

There is also a trough on the right, with flowing dirty water. You can see grass roots, mud and other filth in the water.

Old Wang pointed to the slot on the right: "Hey, you poop here."

"Gah, these two days are your differentiation period. The zookeeper will come to check on you every two hours."

The three ducks, bewildered, walked into number 89 and solemnly promised Old Wang, "I will definitely work hard!"

As soon as they went inside, Old Wang swiftly closed and locked the door in one smooth motion.

Number 90 is opposite number 89, and Old Wang arranged for the duck to be at number 90.

The two rooms are not much different; room number 90 simply has more water and less feed.

Old Wang, with the remaining five ducks and the hen Xia Chuhe, continued walking inside.

After passing through the corridor and turning right, there is another door without a number.

Old Wang opened the door: "Quack, ducklings, come in! Grow well and lay lots of eggs!"

Countless "ducks" inside the door turned their heads in unison to look outside.

These "ducks" are barely recognizable as human, but most of them have grown feathers on their exposed skin, and their originally human eyes have become round and small.

Their eyes had lost their human luster, radiating an inorganic, dark darkness.

Xia Chuhe felt a chill run down her spine from their stares, and she could hear the mercenaries around her swallowing hard.

With a sweep of his wings, Old Wang swept the five "egg ducks" into the duck house like trash.

Before Lao Wang closed the door, Xia Chuhe hurriedly jotted down the layout of the duck shed.

The duck house is bigger than a basketball court, with a row of narrow windows on the high wall, and large characters with red background and black lettering are still pasted on the wall.

There are no beds inside; each duck has a round cushion. The cushions are not large enough for a human to stretch out, so to sleep inside, one can only try to curl up.

There seemed to be something glowing on the right wall of the duck shed, but Xia Chuhe couldn't make out what it was.

Old Wang locked the door: "Hey, I'll take you to the exchange student dormitory."

As Xia Chuhe turned to leave, he vaguely heard voices coming from inside: "Work hard to eat rice and lay lots of eggs!"

Xia Chuhe frowned, secretly worried.

When she was short of points at the base, she refused to stay in the dormitory and preferred to pay extra to stay in a better place.

Now that we're in a dungeon, are we still destined to live in a dormitory?

I wonder what kind of animal her roommate will be.

Chicken? Goose? Quail? Eagle?

...

Xia Chuhe reluctantly followed Lao Wang to the exchange student dormitory.

The exchange student dormitory is noticeably newer than the other buildings, with green tiles and red walls, giving it a rather elegant feel.

The house door had no lock, but a bolt.

Old Wang opened the door, and Xia Chuhe was stunned.

Inside the wall was an open-air courtyard, with the edges slightly trimmed, seemingly to blend in with the other buildings and prevent the exchange student dormitory from being too conspicuous.

Several separate rooms were built in the courtyard in a staggered manner, most of which were empty with their doors open.

Old Wang looked at Xia Chuhe and said, "Hey, just pick any room you like."

Xia Chuhe chose a room close to the door, surrounded by empty rooms.

The exchange students' rooms are all single rooms, with a comfortable and clean single bed, a bathroom and a kitchen, almost exactly the same as a modern single apartment.

Of course, the single rooms still had loudspeakers and big-character posters.

Xia Chuhe felt a little uneasy.

Students from outside the school live in palaces, while students from our own school live in dog pens.

Even in the dungeon world, this principle is still followed.

But now that she's living in the "palace," all she does is talk and no action, which only makes her seem hypocritical.

Xia Chuhe comforted himself, thinking that he could leave the instance and all this awful stuff in just seven days.

She suddenly thought of Bao'er, who was boarding at the base school, and wondered what her living conditions were like and whether she was doing well at school.

Old Wang: "Gah, every four hours, a keeper will come to take care of you. I hope you can differentiate well and contribute to the Raptor Academy."

It's called taking care of people, but in reality it's a disguised form of supervision.

Exchange students have more freedom than local students.

Local students are checked every two hours, while exchange students are checked every four hours.

Xia Chuhe said lazily, "Study hard and make progress every day. The academy gives me a job, and I will shoulder the responsibility for the academy."

Old Wang: "...Gah."

Old Wang turned and left, the door latch rattling.
