Before the differentiation period ended, Wang Yan received two eggs.
One came from Li Qiusheng, the only female mercenary among the duck-eating soldiers, and the other from Ma Jiu, a male mercenary.
"How come you have extra eggs?"
With the sword of Damocles hanging over his head gone, Wang Yan's tense nerves relaxed slightly, and he finally felt a little normal again.
Li Qiusheng said listlessly, "I gave birth to him."
It laid two eggs in two days.
Li Qiusheng was a little annoyed. Unlike Wang Yan, who was directly influenced by the zookeeper, she had a human mindset that took over, making her quite disgusted with herself for being able to lay eggs.
Maku coolly replied, "I stole it."
Wang Yan subconsciously said, "The person whose egg you stole must be heartbroken. You should return it to them quickly."
Without saying a word, Ma Jiu raised his hand and slapped Wang Yan: "Let me treat your illness, are you awake yet?"
Wang Yan: ...
Wang Yan did indeed wake up.
He wasn't woken up by being hit.
Ma Jiu was a healing-type evolved being specially arranged by the butler, capable of treating mental illnesses and alleviating mind control. He only needed to raise his hand to reduce the effects on Wang Yan.
As for that slap, it was purely because he was annoyed by Wang Yan's brainwashed, saintly demeanor.
Wang Yan, who had just been slapped, touched his face and sincerely thanked Ma Jiu: "Brother, you're pretty quick-witted!"
Maju coughed lightly: "Ahem, that wasn't my idea. Since there's an extra egg now, let's share it with someone else."
Among the mercenaries, five were identified as egg-laying ducks, but only Li Qiusheng was actually capable of laying eggs.
Of the other two, one didn't need eggs; he used his charm to coax a little female duck into laying them for him. For the other, the eggs Majiu stole were a lifesaver.
...
As for Ma Jiu's method of stealing the eggs, it was kindly provided by Xia Chuhe.
Although Maju was the least affected by the dungeon raids in the entire hut, he wasn't a smart person. As soon as he heard that the criterion for determining differentiation was to deliver an egg, Maju prepared himself to work hard and lay eggs.
After Xia Chuhe reminded him in the group, Ma Jiu realized that he couldn't let the dungeon lead him by the nose.
Moreover, he had already tried all day but hadn't managed to utter a single word.
Fortunately, after a private chat, Xia Chuhe told him to pay attention to the egg-laying situation of other ducks. If any other ducks had extra eggs, he should find a way—whether to buy, cheat, steal, or rob—to get one egg first.
But if the other ducks don't have any extra eggs, Ma Jiu will have to choose between taking someone else's life or dying himself.
Xia Chuhe only provides methods, not choices.
Fortunately, most of the female ducklings laid two eggs, so Ma Jiu didn't feel too guilty about stealing them.
...
All five ducks delivered their eggs before the deadline, successfully navigating the differentiation period.
...
After the differentiation period ended, all the birds were taken to the back of the house, in front of a lush field.
The field is planted with common feed crops such as wheat, corn, and soybeans. Although the crops are not yet mature, it is already clear that the harvest will be good.
The wheat, not yet yellowed, drooped heavily with green ears; the corn husks were bulging; and the edamame were so plump that one wanted to pluck them off and devour them immediately.
But in front of the field stood a huge, oval-shaped machine, like a feed mixer. Next to the mixer was a conveyor belt that could transport things from the ground to above it. The feed mixer's presence seemed to suggest that the feed provided by the Raptor Academy was all-natural, fresh, and of high quality.
Xia Chuhe was extremely envious. When would her farm have so much land? If only she could take over all of this land...
The blue peacock interrupted Xia Chuhe's daydream by dividing all the peacocks into two groups—Xia Chuhe and the other peacocks.
Xia Chuhe, who was singled out, sensed danger.
Other types of birds, except for racing pigeons, were also divided into two groups: one group consisted of birds that had successfully completed the differentiation period, and the other group consisted of birds that had not completed the differentiation period.
As for the racing pigeons that only have one group, those that have not completed training are thrown into a small dark room by green-headed pigeons. When they come out, they are missing limbs and become snacks for vultures.
The birds that successfully differentiated were bewildered, while those that failed to differentiate were filled with anxiety and confusion; neither knew what would happen next.
The whispers of countless birds merged into a tremendous noise.
Old Wang, with wings on his back, slowly strolled forward: "Caw, be quiet."
The noise stopped abruptly.
The rustling sound of the wind blowing through the wheat fields lingered in the ears of every bird.
Old Wang was wearing a black suit today, and his dull, duck-like face had a quiet solemnity about it.
"Gah, the educational philosophy of the Birds of Prey Academy is self-sacrifice, aiming to educate birds that are most valuable to the world."
Old Wang paused for a moment: "But it's undeniable that there are differences between birds. Some birds, under the tutelage of the Birds of Prey Academy, can gain tremendous value. But some birds have limited abilities and their time studying at the Birds of Prey Academy is very short."
"The Bird Academy will not abandon any bird, no matter how little your value is. The Bird Academy will cherish you. The Bird Academy will always provide opportunities for any bird to demonstrate its value."
"Today is the day you dedicate yourselves to the Birds of Prey Academy. Are you willing?"
A frenzied roar erupted from the audience: "Yes!"
Are you ready?
"Ready!"
“Okay. Let’s start with…” Old Wang’s gaze swept over the ducks with the largest number of undifferentiated eggs.
The penguin waddled over to Old Wang and mumbled something to the duck's eyes.
Old Wang: "Let's start with the peacocks, which are the fewest in number."
Xia Chuhe: ...
The blue peacock spread its tail feathers, plucked one, and shoved it into Xia Chuhe's hand.
Xia Chuhe uncontrollably lifted her leg and walked towards the feed mixer. She stood on the conveyor belt, being sent towards an unknown end.
