Chapter 3 The First Pot of Gold

It was already dark.

Mu Chen took the items out of Shennong Space and picked them up when he was almost at his doorstep.

Duoduo had already prepared the meal and was waiting for it.

Vegetable leaves and cornmeal, nothing else.

"Brother, give me the food, hurry up and start cooking."

"It's too late tonight, we'll kill them tomorrow," Mu Chen said.

Duoduo took the sack, glanced at it, and exclaimed in surprise. "A pheasant? A rabbit?"

In 1994, there were a few families in Heiwu Miao Village who raised chickens, but they kept them to lay eggs and then hatch chicks.

Rabbits and the like can be found in the mountains, but they are very difficult to catch.

Duoduo felt a little reluctant when she heard that Mu Chen wanted to kill the chicken.

The Miao people only slaughter chickens and geese when guests come to their homes.

Mu Chen was the same in his previous life, but after leaving the village for decades, he had long been assimilated into Han culture. Although he still maintained the etiquette that the Miao people valued most, it was only a mere remnant.

Besides, given their family's circumstances, there was no one poorer than them in the entire village.

As far as he was concerned, he was so poor that he had no customers coming to his door.

Besides, it's better to nourish my sister and myself than to spoil other people's mouths.

"Brother, are we really going to kill them?"

"kill."

Seeing that Mu Chen nodded, Duo Duo didn't ask any more questions, but she was still reluctant to part with him.

Mu Chen also saw this scene and comforted him, saying, "Our family's life will get better and better in the future. If you want to raise them, your brother will buy you some chicks later."

"Uh-" Duoduo said crisply, "Okay."

After finishing his meal, Mu Chen began to prepare the black ginseng.

"Duoduo, make me two cornbreads later and put them on the kang (heated brick bed). I need to go to town tomorrow morning."

"Crow."

Mu Chen was very cold on the bed!

It was called a bed, but it was really just a few planks of wood, and the blanket was very thin.

And this house is drafty everywhere.

When the wind blows, everything is fluttering.

There isn't a single decent piece of furniture in the house; we're really poor!

Unable to fall asleep, Mu Chen tossed and turned, so he decided to study the Shennong Space.

The next day, the roosters in the village crowed for the first time.

Mu Chen got up, gave Duo Duo a few instructions, grabbed some pancakes and carried the black ginseng on his back, and went out the door.

"Brother, be careful! It's getting dark."

Before dawn, when it was pitch black, Mu Chen relied entirely on torches for light.

This journey involved traversing mountains and valleys.

On Wuling Mountain, the chirping of insects all around created a sense of desolation.

The road from Heiwu Village to the nearest village is less than a meter wide, muddy and rugged.

It's at least seventeen or eighteen kilometers to the town.

Mu Chen remembered that the Miao villages near Heiwu Village only started building and widening roads after 2008.

At that time, the Miao villages were almost entirely under the attention of the outside world.

What followed was a dramatic transformation, and by 2020, it had gained worldwide renown.

Now that Mu Chen has been reborn, he naturally won't let such an opportunity slip by.

He wanted to be the first Miao man to try something new.

But the prerequisite is money, money, money!

He knew very well that only remote mountainous areas like theirs were poor, while coastal cities were beginning to get rich.

By the time we arrived in town, it was already broad daylight.

Following the path of the herbal medicine shop his grandfather had taken him to before his death, Mu Chen easily found the shop owner.

Because they were acquaintances, the price was the same as the price he had given his grandfather before. However, this time the quantity was larger, so Mu Chen didn't receive the cash until noon.

Twenty catties and one ounce of black ginseng, totaling 12,000.

"Child, did you come alone?"

The owner of the pharmacy was in his sixties and was also a member of the Miao family, including Mu Chen.

The old man looked around, seemingly reluctant to entrust so much money to a minor.

You have to understand how low the cost of living is these days.

A laborer can only earn a few dollars a day, and a few cents can buy a pound of rice.

Those with secure, stable jobs only earn around two hundred yuan a month.

Therefore, 12,000 is an astronomical figure.

"Don't worry, Grandpa. Several princes have come and are waiting for me outside." Mu Chen wouldn't tell the truth.

"That's good."

Grandpa gave the money to Mu Chen and instructed him: "Put it away carefully."

The money and goods were exchanged, and although Mu Chen seemed to have put them in his pocket, he had actually secretly moved them to the Shennong Space.

Before returning home, Mu Chen bought some firewood, rice, oil, salt, and vinegar in town, and also bought a few feet of cloth for his younger sister, Duo Duo.

He bought everything he could need for the household before returning home.

By the time we arrived at Heiwu Village, the sun was almost setting.

"Brother, you're back?"

Duo Duo's dark eyes kept scanning the bags in Mu Chen's hands, because she had never seen her family buy so many things at once.

Mu Chen rubbed her head and said, "Let's go back to the room first!"

Inside the house, Duoduo stared wide-eyed at the large bag of rice.

She couldn't help but smile when she saw Mu Chen buy her new fabric.

When Duoduo smiles, her little crescent moons narrow, and she has two little dimples around her mouth, which makes her look especially beautiful.

"Thank you, brother."

She was so enamored with the fabric that she held it up to herself again and again, trying to figure out how to make it into a beautiful dress. Finally, she leaned close to Mu Chen and whispered, "Brother, are we really going to make it through this New Year?"

"You'll pass! Put your worries aside and get cooking."

"Crow."

Duoduo couldn't bear to cook rice directly with white rice, so she mixed in half cornmeal.

Don't let her young age of eleven or twelve fool you; children from poor families mature early.

Duoduo knew that her family was poor, very poor, extremely poor, so she was exceptionally frugal.

Otherwise, she wouldn't have reacted that way when she saw rice.
