Extra Chapter: Returning Home in Wealth, I Love Hearing Old Friends' Jokes

As soon as Ji Xia said this, Chen Jing stared at her with some displeasure.

Ji Xia quickly raised her hand and explained with a grin, "Don't worry, I'm definitely not still hung up on him or anything, I just want to hear a joke."

"If you want to hear a joke, you can ask me. Why bother asking your second sister?"

Chen Jing gave her a resentful look, but didn't suspect anything.

After all, Lin Haodong looked like he was on his last legs, and compared to him, a successful young man, even the most blind person wouldn't look down on him, right?

He didn't even care about the chairman of the Lin family in Shanghai, let alone Lin Haodong.

Chen Yi knew about Ji Xia's past entanglements with the Lin family, so she didn't mind and generously talked about the Lin family's situation.

Several years ago, Lin Haodong dropped out of school and returned home. He was desperate and unwilling to do farm work in the countryside, so he found a job in the city and also got involved with Yu Qiongyu, the daughter of the grain station manager.

With Yu Qiongyu's background, she is more than a match for Lin Haodong.

However, the Yu family has a hereditary disease, and no one can say for sure which family member will inherit it from.

Yu Qiongyu grew up smoothly into her twenties without ever falling ill. However, not long after she married Lin Haodong, she gave birth to a son, who began to fall ill when he was just over one year old.

Chen Yi wasn't quite sure what the specific genetic disease was, but he had heard that when it flared up, the person would roll around on the ground, drool, convulse, and look like they had epilepsy.

Moreover, her son seems to be allergic to certain foods, and he will occasionally fall ill if he eats something that doesn't suit him, and the frequency of these episodes is very high.

"Yu Qiongyu is also a person with a hard life. I heard that she is quite hardworking. A couple of years ago, she started making some snacks to sell in the market and was able to earn some money."

Chen Yi shook her head and sighed softly, "However, my son often falls ill, and my mother-in-law is always feeling unwell. Both the old and the young often need to buy medicine. Lin Hao is not a hardworking person, so the family has a tough time."

Upon hearing this, Ji Xia felt a pang of sympathy for Yu Qiongyu, as this person was quite similar to her in her previous life.

However, in her previous life, her daughter was perfectly healthy, but her mother was difficult to please, and Lin Haodong was an ingrate who never brought back the money he earned outside.

Lin Haodong can forget about living a life of glory like he did in his previous life. However, Yu Qiongyu is the one who is keeping the family afloat.

A man like that is better off being dumped, or at least Lin's mother will no longer be Yu Qiongyu's responsibility.

However, these are other people's business and have nothing to do with her.

After sitting in Chen Yi's shop for a while, as the sun began to set and the summer heat subsided, Chen Jing drove Ji Xia back to his hometown.

As they passed a five-story building with tiled exterior walls by the roadside, Chen Jing pointed and said, "Big Brother's house is finally finished. The floors inside are all covered with marble, and it looks very beautiful."

He glanced back at Ji Xia and said, "Should we tear down that old house and build a nice one? That way we'll have a place to live when we go home."

Ji Xia rolled her eyes at him: "You can't flaunt your wealth, and you shouldn't be too high-profile either. If you want to demolish and build a house, that's fine, but no more than three stories. Also, make the inside comfortable and convenient, but don't make the exterior too fancy."

"Okay, whatever you say." Chen Jing happily agreed.

Ji Xia's willingness to build a house made him very happy. He had mentioned it a few times before, but he never wanted to do it. Every time he went back to his hometown, it was either the countryside or his old house in the city, sandwiched between a row of new houses, which looked very shabby.

"Wealth and honor should not be returned to one's hometown, for it is like wearing fine clothes at night." He was clearly the most successful among his brothers, yet his family's old house was the most shabby, which was distressing to see.

Of course, he has houses in Beijing, Panyu, and Shenzhen, but what's the point if his family back home can't see them?

The former Nanshan Brigade has long been renamed Nanshan Village, and Nanshan Village has also changed dramatically. The dusty, winding paths are gone, replaced by neat and wide cement roads that can accommodate at least two cars.

Most of the villagers have gone to work in the city, and large tracts of farmland have been contracted out.

The surrounding mountains and forests were also contracted by Ji Zhijun and converted into orchards, where popular fruits were planted.

The latest research has revealed mangoes with thin skin, small pits, and thick flesh; lychees with small seeds and a sweet taste; and the largest Shixia longan.

Besides the orchard contracted by Ji Zhijun, other villagers have also contracted mountain forests to grow fruit trees in the past two years, such as bananas, tangerines, and jackfruits. However, most of them are not yet in season.

It's the peak season for tropical fruits, and along the way back to the village, you can see trucks loaded with freshly picked fruit.

By contracting mountain land and farmland, and starting small businesses, every household is looking for a way out. Most villagers have become wealthy and have built new houses for their families.

The tallest and most beautiful four-story building in the village belongs to Ji Zhijun's family, of course.

Although the Chen family's children earn a lot of money, they all choose to build houses in the town, and only renovate the houses in the village, unwilling to put much effort into them.

Ji Zhijun and his wife have always stayed in the village, so of course they built a big one there.

However, Ji Xia suggested to her brother and sister-in-law that they buy a house in the county town, transfer their household registration there, and let their children study in the county town.

Ji Zhijun was still hesitant, but Zhang Hong was persuaded by Ji Xia. For the sake of the children's education, they should move to the city, especially since the eldest twins were almost five years old and it was time for them to go to the city for kindergarten or preschool.

When the couple returned to their hometown, they were warmly welcomed by the Chen and Ji families.

That evening, the two families gathered together for a large meal and happily drank together.

During the meal, Ji Xia suddenly remembered something and smiled at Secretary Ji and his mother, saying, "Dad, Mom, we're back because we have some good news to announce."
