Chapter 34 Climbing the social ladder, he even disowned his parents.

In the ward.

"Mom, look at this video online. Zhenzhen has really made something of herself now. Xiao Huai started holding a grudge because he found out she was dating another girl!"

A middle-aged woman, her eyes filled with disdain, placed her phone in front of the old lady and began to berate Shen Zhen.

"Mom, you haven't seen Xiao Huai. He's not eating or dressing well in prison, and he's being bullied. My heart is bleeding! Shen Zhen is such a heartless girl! That's her own brother, and she just sent him to prison like that!"

As Chen Lin spoke, her eyes reddened. The thought of her beloved son suffering in prison filled her with both hatred and pain—hatred for Shen Zhen's heartlessness and heartache for Shen Huai's life being ruined.

Shen Guodong, standing to the side, puffed on his cigarette. Though not a talkative man, he shared the same thoughts as Chen Lin. Shen Huai was the only son of their Shen family and could not be wasted in prison. Shen Huai was not yet married; their Shen family line could not end.

Shen Guodong stubbed out his cigarette and said to the old lady, "Mom, we don't interfere with who Shen Zhen dates; that's her freedom. But Xiao Huai said that her boyfriend is no pushover. Not only did he not help Xiao Huai, he also hired a lawyer to extend Xiao Huai's sentence!"

The old lady on the hospital bed looked coldly at her daughter and son-in-law. The two of them had arrived yesterday evening and had stayed for so long. Apart from scolding Shen Zhen and feeling sorry for Shen Huai, they had never asked her about her condition.

This is her dutiful daughter! All she cares about is that good-for-nothing son! She has never cared about anyone else, not her, and certainly not Zhenzhen.

Two clear tears slowly streamed down the old woman's wrinkled eyes. She waved her withered hand in the air and said in a hoarse voice, "You should all leave. This old woman is too old to understand these young people's things."

Upon hearing this, Chen Lin rushed to the old lady's bedside, her face streaked with tears, pleading, "Mother! Shen Huai is also your own grandson! How can you abandon her? Shen Zhen has always listened to you since she was little. Please tell that girl to drop the charges and not pursue the matter any further!"

"You're staying in such a nice hospital room and being waited on hand and foot; you should know that Shen Zhen has hooked up with a rich man. Just give us some money, and we'll never bother her again!"

The old lady stared at Chen Lin in astonishment. She understood each word individually, but put them together, she couldn't quite grasp the meaning. She knew Chen Lin favored sons over daughters, but she hadn't expected her to be so utterly inconsiderate. Shen Zhen was, after all, her daughter! How could she say such a thing?

Chen Lin grabbed the old lady's hand and pleaded, telling her about her hardships, Shen Huai's hardships, and Shen Guodong's hardships, without mentioning Shen Zhen and Tuantuan at all.

When Shen Zhen pushed open the door, she saw her grandmother with her eyes closed, remaining unmoved as Chen Lin cried and pushed her.

Shen Zhen dropped the gift in her hand, pushed Chen Lin away, and called out with concern, "Grandma, Grandma, how are you?"

The old lady opened her eyes when she heard her voice, and shook her head with a wry smile, "Zhenzhen, what brings you here?"

Chen Lin stumbled from the push and landed on her bottom, intending to cry out in alarm. But when she looked up, she saw a tall, short-haired girl standing behind Shen Zhen. The girl's cold eyes held a hint of anger, her thin lips were tightly pressed together, and she exuded an air of oppression.

Chen Lin hesitated, inwardly cursing Shen Zhen for being shameless and a pervert for being with a woman. However, intimidated by Gu Yushu's aura, she dared not make a move and looked back at Shen Guodong for help.

Shen Guodong stubbed out his cigarette and spoke with the authority of a male head of the household: "Shen Zhen, don't you even know how to greet your parents anymore?"

Upon hearing this, Shen Zhen turned her head and gave the two of them a cold look, saying in a flat voice, "Didn't you take my money three years ago and sever ties with me? What are you doing here now, trying to claim kinship?"

Gu Yushu's heart skipped a beat. What else had happened three years ago?

Shen Guodong was speechless at Shen Zhen's words. His eyes widened in anger, and he slammed his fist on the table, roaring, "Did you spring from a rock? Now that you've climbed the social ladder, you don't even recognize your parents anymore!"

Gu Yushu gave Shen's father a cold glance, her eyes like ice, which inexplicably chilled Shen Guodong, making him dare not speak loudly to Shen Zhen again.

Gu Yushu placed the things she was carrying on her grandmother's bedside table, her expression gentle, a far cry from her previous coldness. She asked softly, "Grandma, how have you been these past few days? Zhenzhen and I came to see you. Next time, I'll give the order to the outside, and no unauthorized people will be let in!"

The old lady looked at Yu Shu, then turned to look at Chen Zhen, her eyes filled with tears, "It's good that you brought her here, it's good that you brought her here, Grandma is happy!"

The three of them chatted as if no one else was around, leaving Chen Lin and Shen Guodong standing aside. Intimidated by Gu Yushu's aura, the two of them didn't dare to cause a scene.

Chen Lin's eyes widened when she saw the gold and silver jewelry and luxurious clothes that Gu Yushu had brought. Logically speaking, as Shen Zhen's mother, these things should have been given to her as a token of filial piety!

Chen Lin chuckled twice. "Mom, stop talking. It's almost noon. Shall I go buy you some food?"

Shen Zhen glanced at her out of the corner of her eye, straightened her back, and said haughtily, "Someone will deliver it at noon, but there are only three portions. If you want to eat, you'll have to take care of it yourselves."

Chen Lin gritted her teeth, a flash of jealousy crossing her eyes. She cursed inwardly, "What's with the pretense? So what if he got a good price? And he sold himself to a woman! Disgusting!"

Chen Lin cursed Shen Zhen inwardly, but dared not show it on her face. She wanted a share of all the good things so she could have money to help Shen Huai with his affairs.

Gu Yushu got up and casually sat on the sofa next to him, crossing his long legs. His face was expressionless, and his eyes were indifferent and sharp. He said coldly, "Mr. Shen and Ms. Chen, please make yourselves at home. My family has something to discuss, so we won't keep you any longer."

Faced with Gu Yushu's powerful aura, Chen Lin hesitated for a few moments, unsure whether to stay or leave, and remained frozen in place.

The old lady couldn't bear to see her daughter embarrassed, so she sighed, "Xiaolin, you should go back first. Shen Huai has broken the law, and it's no use begging Zhenzhen. I'm an old woman and I don't have many days left to live. Take whatever you want back; it's Zhenzhen's way of showing you filial piety."

Chen Lin wanted to say something more, but Shen Guodong glared at her fiercely out of the corner of his eye, "Mother has spoken! Go and pack some things, let's go!"

Chen Lin immediately picked up a heavy box from the table, opened it, and found a set of gold jewelry inside. Her eyes lit up with excitement. "Then, Mother, you should rest well. Guodong and I will come to see you again next time!"

Shen Guodong snorted and walked out with Chen Lin, leaving behind the pungent smell of smoke in the room.

Shen Zhen sat down on the edge of the old lady's bed with a dim look in her eyes, took her arm, and asked with a wronged expression, "Grandma, that was prepared for you by A-Shu, why did you give it to her?"

The old lady looked kind and said calmly, "Grandma is old, those things are useless to her." Pointing to the pastries beside her, she smiled childishly, "Those pieces of jewelry aren't as good as this!"

Shen Zhen snuggled up to her grandmother, who was so thin she was practically skin and bones, and it was uncomfortable to hold her. But Shen Zhen still couldn't bear to let go. With tears in her eyes, she said sweetly, "Grandma, if you accept A-Shu's gift, it means you support us!"
