The brutal fight continued. In the small cage, they would occasionally be hit by a tail or body that suddenly lashed out. Because a wild animal was always protecting them, they only suffered minor abrasions and bleeding.
Fang Rong knelt on the ground and pulled Zhang Zheng along. Zhang Zheng had been chased all the way here and had witnessed the ferocity of the wild beast. His legs were so scared that he could barely walk and Fang Rong was basically dragging him along.
"hiss!"
A tail, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, grazed his shoulder with its barbs. Blood slid down his shoulder, the warm scent soaking his clothes. Fang Rong belatedly realized what was happening and managed to free one hand to cover his wound.
Beep! Beep beep!
A drop of unidentified liquid fell into his hair. Fang Rong moved his injured shoulder and wiped it with his hand. His palm was covered in blood, indicating that some wild beast was also injured, just like him.
To be honest, Fang Rong was a little nervous. He was afraid that the wild beast that came to their rescue was injured and unable to handle the upcoming battle, and would instead be dragged down by them.
Bang!
After a loud crash, a wild beast let out a howling sound, seemingly hurt by the impact, or perhaps realizing it was no match for the beast, and suddenly fell silent.
After an unknown amount of time, footsteps suddenly sounded, moving from near to far, as if a wild beast had left.
Fang Rong was even more nervous, not knowing who had left and who had stayed. She covered Zhang Zheng's mouth and breath to prevent the remaining beast from hearing.
The zookeeper's many years of experience told him that wild animals generally rely on smell and hearing to identify their prey. Here, there was a strong smell of blood everywhere, and the fire extinguishers were constantly spewing smoke and hissing. With their hearing and sense of smell somewhat impaired, the wild animal might not be able to find them.
A blood-red beast's eyes slowly approached through the smoke. Although it might not be able to see Fang Rong, Fang Rong could see those eyes clearly.
Go! Go quickly!
He prayed silently.
Whether it was his prayers that came true or not, the sound of orderly footsteps suddenly rang out outside, followed by a man's voice, "Is anyone here? We're from the emergency rescue team!"
The orderly footsteps grew closer, and the man's voice became clearer, "Is anyone here? We're from the emergency rescue team."
The pair of blood-red eyes slowly disappeared into the smoke. He seemed to have spotted those people, but without lingering, he stomped on the fire extinguisher with a bang and quickly left.
Only after he left did Fang Rong dare to speak, "There are people here, we're here."
He hadn't felt much pain because he was too tense earlier, but now that he's relaxed, he's noticed a throbbing pain in his shoulder.
Rescue workers arrived quickly after hearing the noise. There were soldiers in mechs, people with superpowers, and some mutants.
They left a few people behind and continued on. Two people carried over two stretchers, but Fang Rong, who only had an injured arm, refused to go up, saying, "There are people inside who need it more than I do."
Zhang Zheng originally wanted to go up, but now he was too embarrassed. "That's right, there are many zookeepers, cleaning ladies, and hundreds of employees inside. We are only slightly injured, so we don't need to go up."
The rescuers looked at them with admiration and asked them to step back, where a path had been cleared. Several injured employees helped each other out to wait for medical treatment.
Fang Rong and Zhang Zheng helped each other out, where they received simple first aid with the help of medical personnel.
The area outside was crowded with people, mostly from ambulances, as well as some military protective personnel and support staff.
The company he works for is a state-owned enterprise, and it's a crucial experimental base required by the state to raise these animals. If anything goes wrong, it's immediately sealed off.
Fang Rong glanced up casually and saw that the building opposite was filled with electromagnetic guns, densely packed together, and there were also quite a few mechs. Superpowered troops were rushing in from all directions, and there were even a few with barred arms on their shoulders. It was clear that the higher-ups cared a lot about this incident and wanted to suppress it at all costs.
Fang Rong's wounds had just been bandaged when they chased him out, saying, "Unauthorized personnel are not allowed to linger. Get out of here!"
He and Zhang Zheng helped each other leave, and the company's boss came over to comfort them, "Just think of it as a few days off, you don't need to come in these few days." Because Fang Rong was the first person to discover it, without him, the situation would not have been so easy to control, so the boss patted him on the shoulder, "Thank you for your hard work."
Fang Rong was flattered. He rarely saw this CEO, almost once a year, but he had seen many other senior executives. It was said that this CEO was one of the investors and was in charge of management.
Things are different now than before. People with superpowers are much smarter, each one more intelligent than the last.
Previously, these laboratories were sealed off and only the state could conduct experiments. Now, any state-owned enterprise trusted by the state can conduct experiments. This is partly to save expenses, given the years of war and excessive military spending that cannot be recouped. The country is going all out to secure a place on this planet.
Secondly, there aren't that many idle people managing it. Instead, by releasing these experimental bases to other businessmen, a significant amount of investment can be saved. It's important to understand that raising an adult mutant is expensive and extremely difficult.
Now that the country is in crisis, everyone should do their part.
Being a zookeeper is a high-risk, high-reward job. The company provides meals and accommodation, five social insurances and one housing fund. If you work there for a long time, you will also be assigned your own room and car.
Fang Rong also had his own assigned apartment and car. The apartment wasn't big, and the car wasn't a good one, but it was fully equipped. However, since the company was very close to his assigned apartment, just one floor away, and he was a reclusive homebody who was usually quiet and didn't like going out, he rarely drove and always walked home.
