Chapter 203 Protecting Husband
It was almost midnight, and Xiao Xingyu had annoyed the police officer who was working overtime. In the end, he and Zhang Moyan walked out of the waiting room door with their eyes blazing.
"Why don't you want to persuade Xiao Huai?" Zhang Moyan asked doubtfully as he drove under the street lights.
Xiao Xingyu was silent for a moment, leaning back in his chair and stretching his legs. "This requires us to think about why Xiao Huai asked the police to notify 'me', the family member."
Zhang Moyan glanced at him sideways: "Why?"
"Because he knows I'm smart," Xiao Xingyu said slowly, with a peculiar rhythm. "Because he knew I wouldn't spread the news of his detention. In other words, he chose me as his family member because I was concerned about the overall situation and was trying to fool the police!"
Zhang Moyan was stunned for a moment, then realized, "That's why you don't try to persuade him, or even meet him, because you know you can't persuade him even if you meet him."
Xiao Xingyu looked at the empty road ahead and smiled: "You're right, I can tell what Xiao Huai is up to even through his belly!"
"But why would he do that? Is it important that you don't speak up for him?"
Xiao Xingyu rubbed his chin with his fingers. "It's not important, but it's also quite important. As for why he did this, it's probably because he needs some time!"
Zhang Moyan was puzzled: "Need some time? What kind of time does he need?"
"Well, even though he was detained for refusing to disclose his itinerary, he might not be panicking at all," Xiao Xingyu's three-dimensional features were half-hidden in the dim light. "He must be very confident that the police can't find evidence to charge him. You know, trials nowadays are based on the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty'. If there's no direct evidence proving he was Lin Yin's murderer, the police won't be able to do anything to him."
Zhang Moyan's heart trembled when she heard this. She knew that Xiao Huai was a calm and introverted person, but she didn't expect that his actions could have such deep scheming.
"But," Zhang Moyan was skeptical. "Even if the police don't have evidence to prove his guilt, if he refuses to reveal his itinerary for Thursday afternoon, that means he had the time to commit the murder and is a suspect. A major suspect can be locked up for a year or two. It's impossible for the people around him to keep it a secret for such a long time!"
Xiao Xingyu listened attentively. After a long silence, he frowned and said, "That means he's gambling."
"Bet?" Zhang Moyan asked.
"Well, he's betting that the police can find the real culprit in the next few days."
"The real murderer?" Zhang Moyan's heart began to beat rapidly. "So, you think Xiao Huai is not the real murderer?"
Xiao Xingyu nodded. "I know Xiao Huai well. He's a role model for our generation, kindhearted and nosy. When I was a kid, I'd be defeated eight out of ten times as long as he was around. I didn't expect him to become even worse as he grew up, acting like a saint. He even anonymously counseled Lin Yin in the game. I'm surprised he could think of that!"
Xiao Xingyu's words were full of disdain, but he concluded, "So, how is it possible that Xiao Huai killed someone?"
Zhang Moyan nodded.
"But," Xiao Xingyu tapped the tip of his thumb lightly with his front teeth, "I always feel like there's something wrong here."
"I think so too," Zhang Moyan agreed. "Why is he so unwilling to reveal his itinerary? Is there something he considers more important than clearing himself of murder suspicion?"
Xiao Xingyu sneered, "Doesn't he want others to know? Well, I won't let him have his way. I want to see what he's up to!"
He took out his phone and opened the address book, pretending to be confused and lazily muttering, "Ah! It's the middle of the night. Who should I tell first?"
Thanks to Xiao Xingyu's unremitting efforts, the entire Xiao family knew overnight that Xiao Huai was detained by the police. Early in the morning, before the police arrived at work, Xiao Weizhou and Xiao Weiyu went to the police station and then went to the detention center to see Xiao Huai.
Just as Xiao Xingyu had expected, they failed to convince Xiao Huai. No matter how earnestly they tried to persuade him, Xiao Huai was like a chopping-mouthed gourd and refused to confess.
The two elders, like Xiao Xingyu, certainly did not believe that Xiao Huai killed Lin Yin, but they could not do anything about Xiao Huai's stubbornness. The two men who returned empty-handed took out all their anger on Xiao Xingyu.
In the antique hall, Xiao Weiyu put his hands behind his back and walked back and forth angrily between the people sitting on both sides.
"Since Xiao Huai asked the police to notify you, he must have something very important to tell you, perhaps something so important that he can't tell anyone else. Why don't you go and see him? Are you trying to vengeance on him for hitting you with a ruler?" Xiao Weiyu stopped in front of Xiao Xingyu. "Don't forget, you were the one who appointed him to enforce the ruler. He might not even want to hit you!"
Xiao Xingyu sat with his arms folded on a Huanghuali wood official hat chair, his face darkening with displeasure, but he spoke calmly: "Do you think he has something 'important to tell me that no one else can't tell me'?"
Xiao Weiyu glared and bared his teeth. Xiao Weizhou came over and pulled him back, complaining to Xiao Xingyu, "You should cooperate with the police and persuade Xiao Huai to explain where he went on Thursday afternoon. How could you not even meet him?"
Xiao Xingyu frowned: "Do I have that ability? You two elders have failed to persuade him, so my efforts will surely be in vain."
These words sounded very disobedient. Zhang Moyan, sitting next to him, couldn't help but gently push his shoulder.
Xiao Weizhou was so angry at Xiao Xingyu's self-righteousness that his face flushed and his neck thickened: "Xiao Xingyu, do you know how to act? Do you think carefully before speaking? Are you really hoping that Xiao Huai will get into trouble? Let me tell you, Xiao Huai is in charge of a lot of things in Xiao Sheng. Our Xiao family can live without you now. You have lived with your mother for so many years and the Xiao family has not been affected. But without Xiao Huai, it is absolutely impossible!"
