"What? You rejected Teacher Xiao!"
In the champagne-colored lights of Yifei Bar, a guitarist played bluesy youth folk songs. The dozen or so booths surrounding the stage were all full. Jin Xueyang looked at Zhang Moyan's face and said in bold letters, "You're a little ungrateful."
Zhang Moyan poked the tumbler toy on the table and hummed softly.
Today, Jin Xueyang returned from a business trip in Nanjing. The two of them had dinner in the company cafeteria, and they didn't want to go home so early. Thinking about how long it had been since they'd been to Yifei Bar to see Sister Ling, they made a special detour. The two of them sat for a while, and Jin Xueyang asked about Xiao Xingyu in casual conversation, and Zhang Moyan told him about her relationship with Xiao Xingyu.
"Don't you like him?" Jin Xueyang was puzzled. "And you told him that you were adopted, and he didn't look down on you. Why aren't you secretly happy?"
Zhang Moyan looked at Jin Xueyang with a toothache: "Jin Xueyang, why do I feel that there is something wrong with your perspective on the issue?"
"Don't change the subject!" Jin Xueyang scolded sternly, "Tell me clearly why you rejected Teacher Xiao! What's so unsatisfactory about such a perfect man?" He narrowed his eyes, "You didn't realize that the person you love is me, did you?"
Zhang Moyan was speechless. She finally knew which side Jin Xueyang was on.
I wanted to say that he was being unreasonable, but looking at his eyes, I knew that he was serious and would not give up easily, so I had no choice but to answer the question properly.
"Xueyang, there's something I want you to know." Zhang Moyan turned her face to the side, her long wavy hair piled up on her shoulders like seaweed.
"What's up?"
"Actually, I took the civil service exam the year we graduated," Zhang Moyan recalled. "I prepared incredibly hard for it. I took classes and practiced tons of practice questions. I gave it my all, confident I'd nail the written test... But when I took the test, I found out the acceptance rate for the position I applied for was over 1:1,000! I was quite shocked, and not surprisingly, I didn't get in."
"Really? You even took the civil service exam? I had no idea."
"I'll talk about it after I pass the exam."
"The confidentiality is very strict," Jin Xueyang frowned. "So what do you want to say now?"
This is totally irrelevant.
Zhang Moyan rested her chin on her hand and curled her lips indifferently: "What I want to say is that from that time on, I realized that some things are not because I don't work hard, but because even if I work hard, it may be useless."
After hearing this, Jin Xueyang not only frowned, but now even his face wrinkled: "What do you mean? Doesn't Teacher Xiao like you? Don't his parents like you too? You don't even need to work hard for this!"
Zhang Moyan glanced at Jin Xueyang, stared at him for a moment, then gave up and said, "Forget it if you don't understand."
"Who said I don't understand?" Jin Xueyang rubbed the rim of the cup with his fingers, pondering to himself, "Teacher Xiao's family makes porcelain, and your grandfather also studies celadon. Logically, you should be in the same circle, which is perfect. And with Professor Chen's reputation, you two are considered a good match. It doesn't make sense... unless there is some old feud between your two families..."
When he said this, Zhang Moyan's expression subconsciously paused. Jin Xueyang caught the details of this moment and immediately exclaimed in surprise: "Oh my god, is there really a feud?!"
Zhang Moyan didn't answer.
She could have denied it, but Jin Xueyang was the only person in the world to whom she could tell the truth, and she didn't want to lie to him either.
If she even wanted to deceive Jin Xueyang, she would feel that her life was very miserable.
"What kind of conflict is this? Is it serious?" Jin Xueyang pressed. "Is there no room for a handshake and reconciliation?"
"I, I don't know what the conflict is," Zhang Moyan stammered, "Anyway, it should be impossible to resolve."
Although he didn't want to lie to Jin Xueyang, he didn't seem willing to tell everything either.
Jin Xueyang naturally sensed that she didn't want to talk more, so he didn't insist. He waved his hand to indicate that it was no big deal. "If you don't want to talk, then don't. It's not too late to tell me when you want to. Anyway, remember, I, Jin Xueyang, will always be the person you, Zhang Moyan, can talk to about anything."
Zhang Moyan felt a warmth in her heart after hearing the sincere words, and it seemed that even the air conditioning in the bar, which was free of charge, didn't feel so cold anymore.
She smiled with relief: "Okay."
Jin Xueyang took a sip of his wine and sighed, "I used to think that all the men who fell in love with you were miserable. I remember the tall, handsome, and rich guy on the school team, and that school hunk who's now a pilot, and oh, our former director... They were all unrequited loves that ended miserably. But now I don't think a man you fall in love with would be any better off."
He taunted, "Student Zhang Moyan, let me interview you. What do you call this attitude? Can you summarize it yourself?"
"Summarize?"
Jin Xueyang nodded.
Zhang Moyan thought for a moment and said, "Maybe it's 'knowing there's nothing you can do about it and accepting it as fate'!"
"Knowing that there is nothing you can do, just accept it as fate..." Jin Xueyang repeated to himself.
Zhang Moyan stared at the table with empty eyes and said regretfully, "There are people you like very much, but you can only know them. You are not destined to have children with them."
Jin Xueyang's eyes flashed with surprise. He thought for a moment, then seemed to feel that this was quite insightful. He solemnly raised his glass and said, "What a great summary! You are indeed worthy of it! Come, let's drink to our 'knowing there is nothing we can do and accepting it as fate'!"
Zhang Moyan smiled bitterly and picked up her juice: "Cheers." She clinked her glasses with Jin Xueyang's, and the rims of the two glasses made a crisp sound.
