More than a week has passed in the blink of an eye.
The battle in the Luzhong region continued until the last day of early summer.
Today marks the official start of late summer, and the weather is unusually hot and dry.
All members of the 11th Regiment finally received the notification that they would be returning tomorrow.
"Crackling... crackling..."
In the spontaneous welcoming crowd, a little boy stood tall and eager to join the procession.
After many days, the support troops scattered in various places finally regrouped and marched on the inner city avenue they had come from.
He chased after him for a long time, but he couldn't see that familiar figure.
"Brother Xuefeng... Brother Xuefeng..."
The faint voice was almost drowned out by the enthusiastic applause and cheers of the surrounding crowd.
Xiao He, who was at the back of the group, paused.
Although she had never met the child, she remembered the voice and Wang Xuefeng's conversation at his home.
"I'll be leaving for a bit," Xiao He said to Patika beside him.
"Where are we going? I'll go with you," the latter said instinctively.
At this moment, Valerie was walking beside Lucadi giving a report, and her only friend was Xiao He.
"Either is fine." Xiao He didn't object and led her away from the group.
Huo Pingping was momentarily taken aback as the two beautiful women walked toward her.
Xiao He walked over to him, squatted down, and handed him a letter.
"Take this letter home and give it to your mother. It contains news about your father. Don't play around on the way home."
"Dad... Dad...?"
The little boy held the envelope, and suddenly his nose tingled, and tears welled up in his eyes like a spring.
"Is Daddy coming back? Did Daddy say he's planning to come back?"
"They'll be back soon. Just wait a little longer, until it snows this year."
"Really? You're not lying to me?" Huo Pingping asked, her eyes wide and watery.
"I'm not lying to you," Xiao He smiled.
"Then..." Huo Pingping's heart, which had just been put at ease, jumped again.
"Sister, do you know Brother Xuefeng? Where did he go? Why did everyone else come back but he didn't?"
Xiao He's smile was somewhat forced, but he still gently stroked his hair.
"He's like your father; he'll come back once the snow melts this year."
"Then they must come back safe and sound!" Huo Pingping nodded understandingly.
"It definitely will!" Xiao He couldn't help but smile.
After tidying his messy hair, she slowly got up to leave.
"Oh, right! Sister, I have a gift here for Brother Xuefeng! Are you his friend? Could you help me give it to him?"
After Huo Pingping finished speaking, she raised her head with hopeful eyes.
Xiao He was taken aback, then nodded slightly and smiled, "Of course, I am his friend and also his wife."
"What? So you're family!" Huo Pingping looked at Xiao He with wide eyes, as if she had discovered a new continent.
"Yes, what do you have to give him?" Xiao He asked curiously.
Huo Pingping rummaged through his pockets for a long time before finally carefully taking out a string of things.
"This! A little wind chime! Hanging it on the window will bring good luck!" He confidently held up the bell.
Xiao He took the red string handed to him, and saw that a blue wind chime was strung at the end of the string, and there was a small piece of dandelion amber at the end.
"Ding...dong..."
When the wind blows, it sounds like both the ocean and the blue sky calling out.
"It's beautiful. Thank you on his behalf." Xiao He accepted it with great joy.
"You're welcome! Mom said I should thank Brother Xuefeng for his help, so I made this. I hope he likes it!"
"He'll definitely like it."
Patika listened silently to their conversation, her eyes fixed on the delicate wind chime.
Having been immersed in the Temple of Saintess Polis for a long time, she was extremely familiar with these objects that embodied her feelings or longing.
She made these little ornaments for many people, but they were all requested by worshippers. She never made them voluntarily for anyone, nor did she ever have any ulterior motives.
A child so young can offer such sincere wishes; looking back at myself all these years, what have I been doing...?
Patika was bewildered.
She seemed to realize that her way of dealing with the world was different from others.
At this point, she even began to doubt everything about herself.
"Am I only suited to be a saintess to be served...?"
After seeing the little boy off, Xiao He turned around and noticed Patika's dejected look.
"What's wrong?" Xiao He asked.
As a divine-level priestess, she couldn't detect anything unusual about Patika's body. She also lacked Wang Xuefeng's ability to perceive others' thoughts, so she naturally couldn't sense anyone's mind.
“It’s nothing…” Patika shook her head slightly and slowly turned around.
"Hey! You've gone the wrong way!" Xiao He looked at her in surprise.
"Really? I didn't notice." Patika said, turning around as she looked preoccupied, her thoughtful expression obvious to anyone.
Xiao He was somewhat troubled.
She was never good at comforting people, so she had no choice but to bite the bullet and follow Patika, silently trying to find the right words.
"Da da da..."
"Box!!"
A horse's neighing suddenly appeared in front of the street, and the surrounding crowd avoided it in fear.
Against the light, Horry, holding the magic halberd in reverse, rode a black horse toward the two.
Patika, already in a state of confusion, subconsciously looked up and met his sharp gaze.
The light stung her eyes, but she didn't think to look away.
Hori felt a little embarrassed by her gaze, and coughed twice as he dismounted to cover up his awkwardness.
