Chapter 2
"Young Miss, it's time for school."
Xiang Wan opened her eyes instinctively upon hearing the sound. Looking at the familiar bedroom layout, her expression was slightly bewildered.
What's going on? Wasn't she already dead? Or did Dr. Xia bring her back to life?
She was still thinking when the huge face in front of her startled her.
Her maid looked much younger; even the crow's feet around her eyes had disappeared, and she really looked like she was only in her early twenties.
But Wang Yidong is clearly already 37 years old!
Xiang Wan blinked, sat blankly on the bed, staring in the direction of the maid without saying a word.
She didn't even take the school uniform that was handed to her. Instead, she looked around with a curious expression. Although there were some subtle changes, this was indeed her bedroom.
When Wang Yidong saw that she was unwilling to get up, he assumed that the young lady did not want to go to school, so he took out a candy from his pocket and handed it to her.
"..."
Looking at the candy in front of her, Xiang Wan's expression was indescribable. It wasn't like she was coaxing a child; why would she use candy as bait?
Even so, she still took the candy and put it in her mouth, but when she saw the smile in the maid Wang Yidong's eyes, she regretted it and realized she shouldn't have taken it.
Xiang Wan pressed her tongue against her cheek, trying to neutralize the sweetness in her mouth. The candy was her favorite flavor from childhood: lychee, but it was too sweet.
But wasn't this candy discontinued later? Where did Wang Yidong buy it?
She was still savoring the taste when she suddenly realized something was wrong. She stretched out the hand that had just received the candy and discovered that her hand had shrunk!
It doesn't look like the hands of a 26-year-old adult woman at all; it looks more like the hands of a child.
Xiang Wan hesitated for a moment, but quickly calmed down. She glanced at the school uniform that only children could wear in the maid's hand, got up and sat down in front of the dressing mirror.
Looking at her youthful and innocent face in the mirror, her gaze was calm yet tinged with a hint of indifference.
"..." It took Xiang Wan a long time to realize that she had actually been reborn.
In other words, her death was real, the opportunity she had in her mind before her death was real, and Zhou Chengze's marriage fraud was very likely real as well.
Thinking of her own and the Xiang family's tragic future, her gaze in the mirror grew increasingly cold: 'Zhou Chengze, you'd better pray we never meet again.'
Behind her, the maid Wang Yidong looked at the young lady, who was still just a child in the mirror, and was momentarily stunned, thinking that she was seeing things.
It wasn't until the young lady looked into her eyes in the mirror and saw her eyes become clear again that she realized she must have been mistaken.
She had just sensed the aura of a superior in the young lady's eyes, a feeling she had only experienced when she first met President Xiang—cold and composed.
But the young lady was only a teenager, and the maid thought she must have been mistaken.
She was still in a daze when she heard the young lady call her name: "Wang Yidong".
"Hmm?" The maid stared blankly at the school uniform in her hand, then looked up at the young lady upon hearing this.
Xiang Wan looked at Wang Yidong, the maid who was only in her early twenties, and was also sizing her up without making a sound.
Wang Yidong was someone she picked up from outside when she was in fourth grade. At that time, her father's secretary was late to pick her up from school, and she waited for a long time but no one came. She was also very hungry, so she went to a nearby convenience store to buy something to eat.
Unexpectedly, she bumped into Wang Yidong, who was contemplating suicide, by the bridge. Xiang Wan knew that she was selling grilled sausages at a stall across the street. She stopped and asked her why she wanted to commit suicide, but she said she had nowhere to go.
At the time, Xiang Wan found the reason quite incomprehensible, but for some reason, she still brought the person home to work as a maid.
She originally only wanted to keep her alive, but she never expected that Wang Yidong would become her maid for sixteen years.
Wang Yidong took care of her for sixteen years. During that time, Xiang Wan suggested that she retire while still receiving her salary, but she insisted on staying by her side.
Seeing someone she could trust after her rebirth made Xiang Wan feel much better. She looked at Wang Yidong and waved her hand, saying, "Go tell the housekeeper that your salary will be increased by another thousand."
Money is the most direct medium for adults to express their feelings.
Upon hearing this, the maid's expression turned somewhat strange, and she glanced at her several times: "...Miss, the maid's salary was set by the master back then."
The implication is that since she's still a child, her opinion doesn't count.
"..." Xiang Wan's faint smile froze slightly.
Before her rebirth, she had become the youngest heir of the Xiang family, and all matters concerning the group and the family had to pass through her hands first.
But she was still just a child, and she had forgotten that she wasn't the head of the Xiang family yet.
Her expression was clearly somewhat embarrassed, but Wang Yidong behind her lowered his head and subtly curved his lips.
'The young lady is so cute.'
'I really want to poke the young lady's puffed-up cheeks.'
But this little adult has always been arrogant, so Wang Yidong wisely kept his thoughts to himself.
Xiang Wan coughed lightly: "Go tell Grandpa Butler that I need to go to the hospital today."
Upon hearing this, Wang Yidong's expression instantly became tense: "Is Miss feeling unwell?"
Looking at her flawless skin in the mirror, Xiang Wan couldn't help but marvel. It took her a while to realize that the maid was waiting for her answer: "I'm fine, I'm just going to the hospital for a full physical examination."
The maid breathed a sigh of relief: "Yes, Miss."
By the time she arrived at the hospital and finished her physical examination, it was already noon. After eating the nutritious meal that the maid had brought for her, Xiang Wan waited in the lounge for the hospital director to come and give her the examination results.
She had just swallowed the last bite of her food when the hospital director arrived, accompanied by Dr. Xia, who had taken care of her since elementary school.
After graduating with her doctorate, Dr. Xia came to the Xiang family as their family doctor. In reality, she was Xiang Wan's personal physician.
Because Xiang Wan had a congenital heart disease since childhood, her parents were very worried about her health. They only relaxed a little after Dr. Xia appeared.
Because they had spent every day together since elementary school, Xiang Wan and she had a very close relationship. Rather than being doctor and patient, they were more like sisters, and Xiang Wan relied on her extremely.
Before she breathed her last in her previous life, it was Dr. Xia who raced against time to give her emergency care.
Looking at the smile on her face, Xiang Wan guessed that her physical examination results seemed to be very good, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
The dean and Dr. Xia chatted and laughed as they opened the door to the lounge. The dean walked over and handed the medical report to Xiang Wan: "Ms. Xiang, your heart condition is even better than it was six months ago. I have already explained the precautions to Dr. Xia."
Xiang Wan's smile was also very formal: "Okay, thank you, Dean."
"I have another doctor's appointment, so please excuse me."
"Please go ahead, Dean. My father asked me to give you his regards."
Upon hearing this, the dean's smile deepened: "You're too kind, Mr. Xiang."
Once only three people remained in the lounge, Dr. Xia looked at Xiang Wan and asked, "Did your father really want you to greet the hospital director?"
"..." Xiang Wan's brow twitched, and her eyes were filled with speechlessness as she looked at her.
Dr. Xia understood her disdain and said irritably, "You rich people are always so roundabout."
'Actually, it's not just rich people; everyone is this polite.' But Xiang Wan didn't say this aloud. She knew that with Xia Yueshen's straightforward personality, he definitely wouldn't believe her.
She looked at Xia Yueshen and asked the question she most wanted to know: "How is my heart?"
Xia Yueshen didn't mince words: "You're in good shape. As long as you don't get any shocks, you'll be fine."
But she also found it strange that Xiang Wan, who had undergone heart surgery when she was ten years old, was no different from a normal person, yet she would skip school to come to the hospital for a physical examination.
Moreover, she remembered that Xiang Wan always hated going to the hospital. Xia Yueshen had to coax and beg her to come for her six-month check-up.
What's wrong with me? I've suddenly started to care about my health.
Seeing the undisguised probing in Xia Yueshen's eyes, she didn't explain, only saying that she wanted to go home quickly to brush it off.
On the way home, Xiang Wan looked at the medical report in her hand, her eyes somewhat powerless, just like in her previous life.
After her heart surgery, she was in good condition and took great care of her heart. However, starting two years before her death, her heart condition deteriorated.
She never knew the reason before, but now she realizes it's because the plot has reached a point where she's destined to become Zhou Chengze's unforgettable white moonlight, so she has to die young.
To be honest, Xiang Wan didn't know who she should hate. Should she hate the author who killed her off, or Zhou Chengze who cheated on her?
But one thing is clear: she doesn't want to support Zhou Chengze in this life anymore. Even if it means having a heart attack right now, Xiang Wan is unwilling to be manipulated like that.
She was never one to follow orders, let alone knowing her tragic end beforehand.
Xiang Wan swore that if she ever brought Zhou Chengze from that remote mountain village to Beiyi again, she would be the most stupid donkey in the world, and the kind that is both stupid and stubborn.
Meanwhile, she was still contemplating her future, ignoring the other two people in the car, and with a sigh, she went straight back to her bedroom on the second floor.
After she left, Dr. Xia looked at Wang Yidong beside her, completely bewildered: "What's wrong with your young lady?"
Both of them were veterans who had been by Xiang Wan's side for many years, so they were naturally quite familiar with each other. Wang Yidong looked at the young lady's back and said, "Wanwan has been acting strangely since she woke up today."
Xia Yueshen couldn't help but laugh when she thought about the little boy's helpless sigh in the car earlier.
This little adult is so cute!
Remembering what the maid had just said, Xia Yueshen stared at her for a long time without saying a word, until Wang Yidong was forced to ask, "Why are you looking at me?"
"I've wanted to ask you this for a long time," Xia Yueshen said with a curious look, "Why do you call Xiang Wan 'Miss' whenever she's around, and 'Wanwan' whenever she's not?"
'That's because her young lady doesn't like such affectionate terms of address.' But Wang Yidong stubbornly insisted, 'It's nothing.'
"..." Xia Yueshen knew why even without her saying it. It was because Xiang Wan liked to act like a little adult and didn't like others calling her like a child.
Teenage kids are the easiest to understand. They like to act like little adults, acting like arrogant young ladies, and sometimes they like to act aloof, but in reality they are a bit childish.
After dinner, Xiang Wan returned to her bedroom to read. Just as she was about to rest, she heard a familiar knock on the door.
"Please come in."
"..."
Seeing Wang Yidong bring in the milk, Xiang Wan felt a headache coming on. She then remembered that before graduating from high school, she had to drink a glass of warm milk every night before bed without fail.
No matter how much she tried to refuse, Wang Yidong would always bring her milk before she went to bed.
It was even more punctual than her period during puberty.
It wasn't until she went to college that this intractable "ironclad rule" was abolished. Little did she expect that she would have to endure such hardship again.
She was no match for the maid in terms of endurance, so Xiang Wan stopped struggling, took the milk and drank it all in one gulp.
She placed the empty milk cup on the tray and elegantly wiped the milk stains from her lips with a handkerchief: "Don't wake me up tomorrow. I want to rest for a day. Ask my homeroom teacher for a day off."
Xiang Wan wants to think carefully tomorrow about how she wants to live this life.
In her previous life, she and Wang Yidong often took leave. Although she didn't agree with it, she basically let her have her way because of her heart condition.
She originally thought there would be no objections, but to her surprise, Wang Yidong hesitated for a moment: "Miss, aren't you going to Xinbei Town tomorrow?"
"What? Where?"
"Xinbei Town, didn't you say that a new ski resort opened there and you wanted to go skiing there..."
Xiang Wan couldn't hear what Wang Yidong said next, because her mind was completely occupied by the three words "Xinbei Town".
Here we are! Xinbei Town, the place where she and Zhou Chengze first met.
