Chapter 17 The Capable Two-Piece

Erpi was as skinny as a monkey, weighing only about 100 pounds.

Su Wu maintained a regular exercise routine before graduating from university, and he could even run a distance while being carried.

After running out of the alley, Su Wu hailed a taxi and shoved Erpi into the back seat.

He sat in the passenger seat, panting, and said, "Nankai District."

Erpi slumped in the back seat, weakly saying, "Brother, you look unfamiliar. Do we really know each other?"

Su Wu gritted his teeth, "If I didn't know you, I wouldn't care if you lived or died. Looking like this, you deserve to be beaten to death. You went off to cheat on me again, didn't you?"

"Hey, that's all I'm good at, I didn't expect to end up in the wrong place..." Erpi chuckled awkwardly.

Upon hearing this, Su Wu shook his head helplessly.

Erpi talked to him back then, and he said that he only had one hobby: women.

In the end, he got what he wanted, but was ruined by a woman.

Having shaken off his pursuers, Erpi relaxed and began to probe for information.

He didn't really know Su Wu, but he found that Su Wu knew him very well.

This made him extremely frustrated. Wang Guijun was known for his excellent memory, so how could he not remember the person in front of him?

Su Wu got annoyed by the questions and gave him an excuse.

"Don't you remember? Last year, you exposed two scammers on the bus, and I was there."

"Oh, so you helped me back then too, brother. Look at my memory. What's your name, brother?" Erpi asked, suddenly realizing.

Su Wu thought to himself, "This is something Erpi told me back in prison when he was bragging about it."

He laughed and said, "You must have a bad memory. My name is Su Wu."

Erpi is a conman, but he only scams rich people and never targets ordinary people.

Moreover, he couldn't stand seeing other swindlers cheating ordinary people.

He said it was an insult to their industry and seemed too low-class.

While he was in prison, he told Su Wu about his great achievements and how he would send several of his colleagues in every year.

The incident of catching scammers on the bus is something he mentioned before.

When Su Wu mentioned this, even Erpi himself felt that he looked somewhat familiar.

In fact, this was the first time the two of them had truly met in this lifetime.

Erpi is a complex person who cannot be simply categorized as a good or bad person.

If he's a good person, then he's a conman.

But if you say he's a bad person, the good things he's done far outnumber those who claim to be good.

He donated half of the money he swindled, because he himself was an orphan who grew up on the charity of many families.

This wasn't something he boasted about; Su Wu had witnessed it firsthand in his previous life.

Many people visit him every year, making him one of the most prominent figures in the cell.

If this were ancient times, Erpi would have a bit of a chivalrous thief vibe.

Unfortunately, we live in a modern society, and his actions ultimately put him at odds with society.

Moreover, Su Wu calculated the timeline and it seemed that Erpi's accident occurred this year.

It looks like this guy will be going in soon.

Since fate had arranged for them to meet, Su Wu felt it was necessary to lend his brother a hand and give him a new lease on life.

Erpi injured his foot but refused to go to the hospital, fearing that the group of people would find him.

Having no other choice, Su Wu took him back to his residence and bought some medicine to treat his abrasions.

After chatting in the taxi, the two got to know each other and felt an immediate connection.

After treating his wounds, Erpi said gratefully, "Brother, thank you so much this time. If it weren't for you, I would have been in big trouble. I will definitely repay your kindness in the future."

Su Wu knew that this guy was telling the truth; Erpi was a very loyal friend.

Unfortunately, the friendship from his past life doesn't extend to the present, so he has to rebuild it from scratch.

He casually asked, "Erpi, what do you do for a living?"

Erpi was stunned for a moment upon hearing this, then a determined look flashed in his eyes.

He said in a deep voice, "Brother, you saved my life, so I won't lie to you. I'm nothing special, I'm just a conman. But I only con people who are rich and heartless."

After a pause, before Su Wu could speak, he recounted some of his own experiences.

It mainly covers his background and why he chose this path.

His first scam was because the orphanage that had raised him was short of money and had no other choice.

But once he tasted the sweetness of success, he couldn't turn back, since making money was so easy.

Having heard it countless times, Su Wu forced a laugh as he listened, then spoke in a serious tone.

"Erpi, I don't think you're a bad person, so why don't you take the right path?"

Erpi sighed and said, "Who would want to be a bad guy if they could live a decent life? I was actually planning to retire from crime after this last job and start a small business, do you believe me?"

"What good is it if I believe you? You have to do it." Su Wu rolled his eyes.

"You little brat, you're messing with me!" Erpi said angrily.

Su Wu shook his head. "I'm going to challenge you. If you're so capable, then stop now and start a business with me."

"You? What kind of business can a college student like you start? Do you even have money? You're not planning to sell vegetable scraps and eggs, are you?" Erpi said with a look of disdain.

Before Su Wu could explain, Erpi smiled and picked up a cigarette from the table.

He lit a cigarette with unparalleled nonchalance and squinted his eyes.

"Brother, I know you're an honest man, but I can't live a life of poverty anymore. But don't worry, this time I'm closing a big deal, worth tens of millions."

"When I succeed, whatever business you want to start, I'll invest in you. We'll work together, and if we lose money, it's on me."

Erpi was full of confidence, putting on an air of "I'll protect you from now on."

Su Wu probably guessed that he was referring to that matter, but he couldn't point it out.

After all, Erpi didn't say anything; if he did, then there would be a problem.

He tentatively asked, "What kind of big order is it? Tell me about it, bro."

"Hehe, it's unspeakable, it's unspeakable." Erpi laughed as he stood up.

He tightened his slightly loose trousers, pursed his lips in frustration; they were simply too ill-fitting.

He looked up at Su Wu with utmost seriousness.

“Brother, I can’t thank you enough. It’s not that I didn’t want to tell you, but I was afraid of implicating you. I’m not on the right path, so if something happens to me, it’s my own fault, I’ll get my comeuppance. But if it implicates you, that would be a sin.”

After saying that, he cupped his hands in a very江湖 (jianghu, a term referring to the world of martial arts and chivalry) manner towards Su Wu.

"I've noted down your contact information. If my brother gets through this, I'll contact you immediately. Goodbye."

After saying that, without waiting for Su Wu to speak, he ignored the injury on his foot and staggered out of the house.

Su Wu raised his hand as if to persuade him to stay, but in the end he let go.

Once Erpi has made up his mind about something, it's very difficult to change it.

It's pointless for him to say anything now; if he lets something slip, it will only backfire.

After thinking about it, he figured he already knew what Erpi was doing last time and when, so he could just help him out later.

If he could really save Erpi when he was framed, perhaps he could truly turn over a new leaf.
