In standard terms, it is a transitional space that is deserted, eerie, unsettling, yet accompanied by a strange sense of familiarity.
These types of spaces mostly appear inside buildings, mixed with unnatural lighting. Classic examples include stairwells with flashing emergency lights, subway station corridors, waiting rooms, and supermarket aisles.
In a broader and more abstract sense, many important stages in life, such as coming-of-age ceremonies and weddings, can also be considered a kind of "threshold space" in memory.
However, the new ability that Xu Shi acquired is clearly not limited to this.
