Chapter 108 The Wasteland

"Wilderness, here we come," Alex whispered, as the group gradually disappeared on the other side of the horizon, leaving behind endless dust and the villagers' eager anticipation.

Several days later, on the edge of the wasteland, sandstorms raged, and the sky was a hazy yellow. The warriors' group appeared small yet resilient, standing tall in the wind like camel thorns in the desert, tenacious and unyielding.

"This place is so desolate, not even a bird would bother to poop here," muttered a rough-looking man in the group. His name was Bart, a former mercenary. Beneath his rough exterior lay a sensitive heart. "However, the more godforsaken a place is, the more likely it is to hide treasures."

Eileen smiled slightly, "Bart, your intuition is always so accurate. I hope this time will be no exception."

Just as everyone was discussing, the sound of rapid hoofbeats broke the silence of the wilderness. A thin, old horse, carrying a ragged traveler on its back, staggered towards them.

"Help...help me!" The traveler fell off his horse and collapsed onto the sand, still terrified.

Alex rushed forward and helped the man up. "What happened? Why are you so flustered?"

The traveler, still catching his breath, said haltingly, "I...I was a member of a caravan. We...we encountered...a monster! A gigantic creature I'd never seen before. The entire caravan was wiped out, and only I escaped...escaped."

Leia's expression turned grave upon hearing this. "A gigantic creature? How could such a creature exist in the wasteland?"

Whispers rose and fell among the crowd, some filled with fear, others with curiosity. A young female mage, Lia, gleamed with excitement in her eyes, "If such a creature truly exists, perhaps it holds the key to the secret we seek!"

After careful consideration, Alex decided to lead a portion of his men to investigate the location of the caravan's attack. Before departing, he instructed Eileen, "Take good care of everyone. If we are not back by nightfall, return to the village immediately. Do not take any risks."

The group split into two. Alex led a group of warriors, following the surviving traveler deeper into the wasteland. Eileen, on the other hand, was responsible for guarding the camp. Her gaze was resolute; even in the face of unknown dangers, she was determined to protect everyone.

As they ventured deeper, the landscape of the wasteland became increasingly eerie, with massive rocks towering like monsters and the wind howling like whispers.

"There!" The traveler pointed ahead, where a huge shadow loomed in and out of sight amidst the sandstorm. The group held their breath and slowly approached.

The creature was even more astonishing than they had imagined, covered in hard scales, its four legs as steady as a rock, and a pair of eerie green eyes that gleamed in the shadows, like a ruler of the wasteland.

“This…this is…” Bart’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and his grip on the weapon tightened involuntarily.

"Quiet," Alex said softly, his gaze fixed on the behemoth as he considered his options. "We're not here to fight; we need to understand it. Perhaps it's the key to protecting this land."

Just then, the behemoth suddenly turned its head, its eerie green eyes seemingly seeing through everything, staring intently at them. A sense of oppression filled the air, as if time itself had frozen.

Just when everyone thought they were about to face a fierce battle, the giant beast slowly lowered its head, seemingly conveying some kind of message in a strange way.

Alex gazed at the behemoth, a strange feeling welling up within him—awe of nature and a thirst for exploration of the unknown. "It doesn't seem to want to harm us."

He boldly took a step forward, reached out his hand, and tried to communicate with the giant beast. Those around him held their breath, and could only hear the faint sound of the wind and sand rubbing together.

Suddenly, the giant beast exhaled a breath from its nostrils, then slowly turned around, its massive body leading them to a secluded valley. In the valley, a beam of light pierced through the gloom, illuminating an ancient stone door.

"This is... the location of the ancient secret?" The traveler was shocked, but also felt a glimmer of hope.

Alex turned to the group, his eyes resolute. "It seems our journey is far from over; it has only just begun. Are you ready, my companions?"

"Ready to go at any time!" The team's response was full of determination and courage.

Witnessed by the wasteland, the group embarked on the road leading to the stone gate. Behind them, the giant beast stood silently, like a guardian deity, watching them until they disappeared from sight.

The winds and sands continue, but the story of the wasteland has turned a new page with the arrival of the hero. On this forgotten land, the battle between light and darkness has only just begun.

"Whatever awaits us, as long as there is light in our hearts, we will have nothing to fear." Alex's words echoed in the wind, both a self-encouragement and an encouragement to all brave souls.

In the distant villages, people eagerly await the return of light and hope, believing that no matter how dark the world may be, there will always be a group of people who will bring light and hope.

"Look over there, are they back?" At the edge of the village, an elderly villager pointed to the gradually appearing silhouette on the horizon, his eyes sparkling with excitement and anticipation.

"It's Alex and the others! They're really safe and sound!" another young villager exclaimed, his voice filled with disbelief. Villagers came out of their homes, gathered together, and discussed the story, their eyes filled with curiosity and admiration for the return of the heroes.

As Alex and his group slowly entered the village, a burst of enthusiastic cheers erupted from the crowd. Children surrounded them, their eyes wide with curiosity as they peered at the figure of the giant beast behind them. Although it had not yet been revealed, the mere fact that it existed was enough to make the village buzz with excitement.

"What did you see? Did you find treasure?" a little boy asked, jumping up with boundless longing for adventure in his eyes.

Alex smiled and crouched down to be at eye level with the children. “More precious than treasure is the test of courage and wisdom, and…” He paused deliberately, prompting a flurry of eager questions, before continuing, “and an unexpected friend.”

Under a large tree in the center of the village, Alex recounted their experiences, and the villagers sat in a circle, listening intently. The elders shook their heads in amazement, while the young people rubbed their hands together, as if they too had been on that adventure.

"Unbelievable, such creatures actually exist." A middle-aged blacksmith murmured to himself, his eyes filled with both awe and excitement.

“Moreover, it seems to have led them to discover something…” one of the embroiderers chimed in, her eyes filled with curiosity and imagination.

“That’s right, the secret hidden behind that stone door could change the fate of all of us,” Eileen added, her tone filled with unprecedented determination.

As night fell, the discussion continued around the village campfire. Leia gazed at the flickering flames and said softly, "Tomorrow, we will embark on our journey again, to uncover that forgotten history. Are you all ready?"

"Ready!" came the voices of a group full of passion and determination.

At that moment, Alex and Eileen sat side by side by the fire, exchanging a meaningful glance. "We brought back more than just stories; we brought back a yearning for the unknown and a heavy responsibility," Alex said softly.

“That’s right. Tomorrow, whether it’s hope or challenge, we will face it together.” Eileen nodded, her gaze fixed on the distance where the night sky was as dark as ink and the Milky Way was dazzling.

Conversations gradually faded, and the village returned to tranquility, with only the occasional sound of the wind seemingly telling the story of a new chapter about to unfold.

"What do you think is behind that door?" a boy whispered to his friend, his eyes full of longing.

“Who knows? Maybe it’s treasure, or maybe it’s a whole new world.” The boy’s friend smiled mysteriously. “But one thing is for sure: with Alex and the others, whatever it may be, we will no longer be afraid.”

The two smiled at each other, gazing expectantly at the night sky, where the endless stars seemed to foreshadow limitless miracles in the future.

For Alex and his companions, this night was merely a brief respite in their long adventure. Tomorrow, as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the wasteland, they will carry the hopes and blessings of everyone as they venture into the unknown depths, embarking on a new legend.

"Prepare to welcome the light, children of the wasteland." In the night sky, it seemed as if a sentence gently drifted into everyone's heart, leaving behind endless longing and anticipation.
