Chapter 190 A Chess Piece

The receptionist's face turned bright red.

Zhang Wanru felt that the other person had been intimidated by her, and asked arrogantly, "Are you still going to ask me to leave?"

"Then...then..." the girl said, forcing a smile, "Then please get out!"

Zhang Wanru stared in shock, her mouth agape, her eyes blazing with fury.

"Hey! You little girl! How can you talk like that?"

The little girl didn't give in to her either, insisting:

"Anyway, you just need to get out, no matter what method you use! You're not welcome here."

Zhang Wanru felt that the other party was unyielding, and in anger, she started yelling:

"I told you, I'm Lin An's mother, let me in!"

"No! If I let you in, I'll really lose my job. You should leave now."

Zhang Wanru shouted, "How dare you, a nobody, interfere in our affairs? You really don't know your place!"

The receptionist snapped, "Are you crazy?! What era are we living in? Why are you putting on airs? I have hands and feet, I earn my own money through hard work, who gave me the right to yell at me like that!"

"I'm warning you, if you don't leave, I'm calling security!"

In an instant, Zhang Wanru remembered the incident where she had caused a scene at the Yu Group and been thrown out by security personnel. Not only was it humiliating, but the fall to the ground was also very painful.

Thinking of this, her arrogance immediately diminished considerably.

At this moment, as lunch break was approaching, Yu Yuntian came out.

The two were startled the moment their eyes met.

The receptionist hurriedly repeated, "Get out of here!"

Zhang Wanru stared blankly at Yu Yuntian, not understanding why he would appear at her son's company.

"Why are you here? This is Lin An's company!"

Yu Yuntian glanced at the lunchbox in her hand and quickly realized what she was up to. "Damn it, she's like a persistent ghost!" he sneered.

"That's right! This is Lin An's company, not yours. Why should I be here, and why should I tell you anything?"

Zhang Wanru was furious and shouted, "But Lin An is my son!"

"So?" Yu Yuntian shrugged. "So what? Does he even acknowledge you? Someone like you only deserves to be Lin Rou's mother!"

Zhang Wanru was speechless after being confronted. She felt insulted but couldn't pinpoint exactly what had been insulted. She was indeed Lin Rou's mother.

Xu Mo then came out as well. That's how leaders are; they leave early and eat early.

Xu Mo stared blankly at the scene before him, thinking to himself, "Misfortunes never come singly. The company's affairs are already troublesome enough, and now Zhang Wanru is adding to the chaos."

Zhang Wanru knew that Xu Mo and Lin An had a close relationship, so she had to be careful about her image in front of him. She remembered Lin Rou's advice: things couldn't be rushed, and she had to take it slowly.

She held up the lunchbox in her hand and said cautiously:

"Xu Mo, I'm here to bring food to Lin An. I won't disturb your work any longer. Could you please give it to him for me?"

As she spoke, she shoved the lunchbox into Xu Mo's hand.

Without looking back, he turned and left.

Watching her departing figure, the receptionist let out a long sigh and turned to Xu Mo, saying:

"Mr. Xu, you're the one who received the items; it has nothing to do with me."

Yu Yuntian chimed in, "Do you think she might have poisoned it?"

Upon hearing this, Xu Mo shuddered and began to hesitate about whether to throw away the taste of his mother's cooking.

Xu Mo felt like he was holding a hot potato. It would have been better not to take it, but now that he had it, as an outsider, it felt a bit wrong to dispose of it without informing Lin An.

After thinking about it for a while, he still took the lunchbox into Lin An's office.

"Zhang Wanru sent this to you. Do you want to send it for testing?" Xu Mo pushed the exquisite lunchbox in front of Lin An.

Lin An put down the documents in his hand, opened the lunchbox and saw the braised pork. He frowned slightly; it was indeed something he liked to eat.

"Don't eat it, it might be poisoned." Xu Mo still felt lingering fear when he thought about the last time the beverage was poisoned.

Lin An closed the lunchbox and picked up the folded letter paper pasted on it.

It read: "My dear son, this is lunch that Mom has prepared for you. I hope you like it."

After reading it, Lin An felt a distinct nausea in his stomach and wanted to vomit.

Xu Mo took the letter and read it through, then asked in surprise, "Zhang Wanru can cook?"

Lin An recalled her days at the Lin family home, where Zhang Wanru almost never stepped into the kitchen. Not only could she not cook, but she was also completely incapable of any housework.

"Probably not."

Xu Mo couldn't help but sigh, "Could it be that she specially learned to cook for you?"

"Is she trying to make it up to you? Has she suddenly become kind-hearted?"

"Do you think a person's conscience can suddenly grow?" Lin An joked.

"Um...not usually, then what is she going to do?"

"Don't you find it strange? The Lin family went bankrupt not just today, why is she suddenly trying to curry favor with me when the company is in trouble?" Lin An said calmly.

"Besides, look at the dishes. I've cooked before, and I know that a novice couldn't possibly make dishes of this quality. It's most likely that someone else made them. Her actions are too deliberate."

Xu Mo seemed to understand something:

"You mean, she has ulterior motives? She orchestrated all these things targeting Xiao An's company?"

After asking the question, Xu Mo sighed and said:

"She doesn't seem like it! Can she really do something so complicated?"

"Of course she couldn't. Someone like her who needs to drink brain-boosting drinks would never be able to play such a big game. But that doesn't mean it's unrelated to her. She might just be a pawn."

Xu Mo nodded: "Then what do we do?"

"Find someone from a detective agency to keep an eye on her and investigate who she's been in contact with lately. Also, when she brings food again, don't make her leave immediately. Make her put the food down and see how long she can hold out."

"What if she delivers it every day? You won't soften your heart just because you're touched, will you?" Xu Mo asked rhetorically.

Lin An scoffed inwardly and said, "I'm not that desperate for love."

"That's good. Don't forget, she didn't even come to see you when you were dying," Xu Mo reminded him.

"Don't worry, I won't forget." Lin An is someone who can remember everything he sees. Unless he deliberately tries to forget, he will never forget the things from the past.

"Okay, I'm going to eat. I'll bring you some back too. Don't eat the one Zhang Wanru gave me."

Lin An nodded and casually tossed the lunchbox into the trash can.

Seeing this, Xu Mo felt relieved and went to eat.

A moment later, Lin An received a call from Tong Jun.

"Hey, cousin, is there any news about Lin Zhe?" Lin An called out to his cousin very affectionately, as if they were blood relatives.

Tong Jun said in a deep voice, "There's news, but it's not good news. You need to be mentally prepared."
