Chapter 3 Wolf Heart
Wen Rugui's face was gloomy, and his eyes passed over Lin and fell on Wen Hao's face.
A girl in her twenties is like a stretching willow, slender and beautiful.
But Wen Rugui felt only annoyance when he saw it.
This daughter, born mute, had brought him nothing but shame. And now, as she grew older, she had even begun to behave like a frivolous woman.
"Ah Hao, do you know your mistake?"
Lin came back to her senses and didn't take Wen Rugui's anger to heart: "Master, do you know that our Ah Hao can talk now!"
After hearing this great news, my husband will no longer be angry.
Wen Rugui frowned upon hearing this, his tone becoming even colder and harsher: "Since you can speak, why don't you reply? Or do you not think you are wrong?"
The strange news that the second daughter of the Wen family had spoken spread as soon as the banquet was over, and along with it, the rumor that the second daughter of the Wen family had climbed over the wall to peek at Prince Jing also spread.
Wen Rugui was furious when he heard this and went back home to ask for punishment.
Lin was puzzled by Wen Rugui's harsh voice: "Master, didn't you hear clearly? Our Ah Hao can speak now."
"I'm not deaf." Wen Rugui's tone was cold, a look Lin rarely saw. "Since you're just like any other person, you should understand the rules. Your daughter made a mistake, and as a mother, you don't know how to discipline her. Are you going to spoil her and make her lawless, ultimately harming yourself and others?"
Wen Chan, who had been silent the whole time, couldn't help but persuade him: "Father, please calm down..."
"Don't interrupt your parents when they're talking."
Wen Chan pursed her lips, looking a little embarrassed.
Wen Hao's heart was filled with rage, but she tried her best to remain calm. "My daughter was wrong. I shouldn't have climbed over the wall to find out what was going on just because I heard Prince Jing calling for help."
"Hear Prince Jing's cry for help?" Wen Rugui sneered, "That's not what the rumors say."
"What's the rumor?" Wen Hao asked calmly.
Wen Rugui looked at the mother and daughter and snorted coldly, "They said you were spying on Prince Jing and your intentions were not right!"
This statement is enough to ruin a woman's reputation.
Lin's face flushed with anger: "Master, don't listen to those gossipy people. Ah Hao is kind-hearted and is worried that something bad will happen to Prince Jing."
Wen Rugui laughed in anger: "Stupid! Even if it is true, who in the world would believe it?"
What people are willing to believe and spread are always malicious and romantic gossips.
Mrs. Lin looked at her furious husband and felt a sense of strangeness. "So what if people don't believe me? Ah Hao is misunderstood by the world, and we are already heartbroken. Why is Master still angry at Ah Hao?"
"You!" Wen Rugui pointed at Lin and angrily swung his sleeves, "A loving mother often spoils her child!"
Lin was completely devoted to Wen Rugui, but she couldn't stand his criticism and immediately started arguing: "I think the master is stubborn and pedantic, he has read too much..."
The two began to argue, their voices growing louder and louder.
Wen Chan quietly held Wen Hao's hand, looking uneasy.
Wen Hao became even calmer.
Many things do not happen suddenly, but there are signs in advance.
My parents, who used to treat each other as equals, have been arguing a lot in the past year, simply because my grandfather passed away and the person my father was worried about was no longer around.
Without any fear, there is less need to hide the fact that you don't love your wife.
Soon, my father would bring my cousin who was raised outside back home, along with a pair of children. The eldest son, Wen Hui, was even one year older than his sister.
My grandmother came to the house to make the decision on my mother's behalf, but my father said that he was forced to marry my mother by my grandfather after he passed the imperial examination. He was already married to my cousin at the time, and my grandfather threatened to ruin his future and harm my cousin if he did not agree to the marriage.
He had no choice but to agree to the marriage.
My grandfather was a king of the mountains and a hero of the green forest when he was young. Some people don't believe this statement, while others do.
Twenty years ago, General Lin was still the Duke of Dingguo. Given his bandit nature, he might really do such a thing just to get his daughter to marry her lover.
My grandmother angrily accused my father of lying, but my father found witnesses, one was the book boy who accompanied him to Beijing for the imperial examination, and the other was a cousin who had just come to Beijing from his hometown.
This confirmed what my father said.
My grandmother was so enraged that she died without even being able to spit. My mother drew her sword, intending to die with my father, and stabbed him.
My father had a reason to divorce my mother, and he was praised by the world for his benevolence and righteousness in not divorcing his wife. Later, he wrote a letter to apologize for divorcing his wife and remarrying. Considering that he was forced, the emperor did not pursue the matter.
Next, her cousin Chang became her stepmother.
My mother couldn't bear the shock and became crazy. My father took my mother back home to take care of her until the end of her life, which naturally won him a lot of praise.
Even though she was the eldest sister, she felt sorry for her mother's situation, but she could also understand her father's difficulties.
Only she knew the truth after meeting her stepmother Chang several times.
Before my father went to Beijing to take the imperial examination, he had never married Chang!
He was full of lies and slandered his grandfather, but he was just greedy and wanted his mother to make room for his beloved woman so that his only son could have the status of the eldest son.
It’s a pity that she can’t speak and is being watched closely, so she can’t reveal the truth.
When Wen Hao thought about this, he felt deep hatred.
The bang of a door slamming brought Wen Hao back to his senses.
Lin stared blankly at the swaying door curtain, her lips pale.
Wen Chan held Lin's hand and comforted her softly, "Mother, don't be angry. Father just couldn't think it through for a moment—"
Wen Hao interrupted her: "Mom, don't you think father has changed?"
The elder sister's consolation could certainly make her mother feel better, but it would only make the wound worse. What she needed to do was to prepare her mother so that she wouldn't be caught off guard by the sudden shock of the crisis.
This time, her father could not live comfortably with his lovely wife and son in the mansion bought by her grandfather. She wanted him to get as far away from her as possible.
"Why did Ah Hao say that?" Because Wen Hao couldn't speak before, Lin didn't think it was abnormal for her to say that. Instead, she had more patience to listen.
Wen Hao clenched his hands in his sleeves, trying to appear calm.
If she wants to change those things, she needs to be calm enough so that people will listen to what she says instead of treating her like a little girl throwing a tantrum.
"As far as I can remember, Dad and you have never had a quarrel over these years. But in the past year or so, Dad has gotten angry with you a few times."
Lin was startled and said subconsciously, "It's because your grandfather passed away that your mother is in a bad mood, so she always argues with your father."
Wen Hao shook his head: "Mom has gone through the pain of losing her father, so Dad should be more understanding. Why is he holding it against you?"
Lin was stunned by the question.
On the way back, Wen Chan took advantage of the fact that no one was around and whispered to Wen Hao, who was lying on the maid's back, "Second sister, don't say things like that to mother in the future, lest there be a rift between mother and father."
Wen Hao looked at Wen Chan in silence for a while, then asked softly, "Sister, will you believe what I say?"
Wen Chan curved her lips and smiled: "Of course I believe it."
"Then come with me back to Luoyingju, big sister. I have something to tell you."
