Chapter 302 Wan'er's Miscarriage
Not long after, Gu Xiuming returned to Qingyuxuan and found his two aunts and Meng Jinyao sitting in the small flower hall.
Seeing the three sisters-in-law, Gu Xiuming was slightly taken aback. He wasn't surprised that Meng Jinyao was there, but why were her two aunts also there?
Gu Xiuming bowed to the three of them, and before the three elders could speak, he began to confront Meng Jinyao in front of the maid: "Mother, when I came back just now, I passed through the back garden and heard the maid say that you pushed Wan'er. Why did you do that?"
Meng Jinyao looked at him with a warning in her eyes and said calmly, "She fell down on her own. I didn't push her. Xiuming, there are consequences for talking nonsense. Think carefully before you speak."
With red eyes, Gu Xiuming angrily questioned, "With so many witnesses, you still want to deny it?"
As he spoke, his eyes were filled with disgust as he looked at Meng Jinyao: "You should have known last year that the only person I love is Wan'er. If you are not happy about me being with her, you can come at me. But she is pregnant. How could you do that? I'm not afraid to tell you that even without Wan'er, I would not be with you. You should give up on that idea as soon as possible and live obediently with my father."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao was not angry. She calmly stated the facts: "Look at what you are saying. It's as if I have some shady affair with you. I am your mother now. It is shameless and disrespectful to your elders to say such things. This is unfilial."
“A loving mother inspires filial piety in her son. Mother, tell me, how can a son be filial if the mother is not loving? If something happens to the child in Wan’er’s belly, aren’t you afraid that the spirit of the unborn child will haunt you in your dreams?” Gu Xiuming stared at her intently, his face contorted with rage, clearly furious.
Zhang and Chen listened to the conversation between the mother and son, secretly alarmed. One was questioning them with righteous indignation, while the other was clearly at a disadvantage, only saying that she did not do it, but she had no evidence to prove that she did not do it, while the witnesses all saw that it was Meng Jinyao who did it.
However, there's something strange about this. If it really was Meng Jinyao's doing, how could she be so calm now? Even if her third brother dotes on her, he wouldn't tolerate harming the Gu family's offspring.
If it wasn't Meng Jinyao who did it, then wasn't it Aunt Li who staged a whole thing to frame Meng Jinyao? Why would Aunt Li do such a thing? She was willing to sacrifice her child just to frame Meng Jinyao. That's really ruthless. As long as Aunt Li insists that it was Meng Jinyao who did it, even if Meng Jinyao isn't divorced, she will be sent to the family temple to live in seclusion.
Madam Zhang glanced at Meng Jinyao and spoke up for her: "Xiuming, there must be some misunderstanding. How could your mother, such a kind person, do such a thing? Besides, she and your father are a loving and harmonious couple, so why would she be jealous of Aunt Li?"
Gu Xiuming countered, "If she wasn't jealous of Wan'er, then why did she want to harm Wan'er?"
Zhang: "This..."
This is a vicious cycle, but the truth can only be known by the witnesses present.
Meng Jinyao's face darkened, and she snorted coldly, saying in a disdainful tone, "Why would I be jealous of her? I am the Lady of the Marquis, and she is a concubine who cannot be brought to the table. Since you are so worried about Concubine Li, instead of wrongly accusing me here, why don't you go and see Concubine Li first? She fell quite hard, hitting a tree, and many plum blossoms were shaken off. Now is the time when she needs you the most."
Gu Xiuming's expression froze. Just as he was about to go see his beloved, Hongling rushed back with the doctor, panting. She bowed to him and said, "Young Master, you must do justice for your concubine! Madam pushed your concubine, and she fell badly. We don't know if she can save the baby in her womb."
After hearing this, he glared coldly at Meng Jinyao: "Mother, the witness is right here, what else do you have to say? You might be able to fool a three-year-old with such sophistry, but I never expected you to be so vicious."
The doctor glanced at the people present, none of whom seemed to need a doctor's attention, and asked, "May I ask which distinguished guest requires treatment?"
Madam Chen said, "Xiu Ming, take the doctor to treat Aunt Li first. The situation is urgent and cannot be delayed. We can talk about anything else later."
Gu Xiuming nodded and said "Mm," then stopped arguing with Meng Jinyao and quickly took the doctor to the side room to see his beloved. Hongling followed closely behind.
After they left, Madam Chen asked hesitantly, "Third sister-in-law, did you...did you really push Aunt Li?"
Meng Jinyao retorted, "Second sister-in-law, do you also think I would do such a thing?"
Chen shook her head subconsciously. Having spent nearly a year with her sister-in-law, she knew Meng Jinyao quite well. She was a smart woman and wouldn't do something so foolish as to ruin her hard-earned wealth and status, unless she was jealous or extremely angry and lost her mind.
Zhang seemed to be thinking about something, and guessed, "Third sister-in-law, could it be that Aunt Li tripped and fell, and then framed you?"
Meng Jinyao nodded and said, "She fell on her own."
Upon hearing this, Zhang and Chen were shocked.
Madam Zhang murmured, "If that's the case, she's far too audacious. Relying on Xiu Ming's favor, she's become arrogant and treats her elders like this. I think she thinks she's living too well."
Looking at Meng Jinyao, Madam Chen felt quite sympathetic for her plight: "It's really unlucky for Third Sister-in-law to have such a terrible experience."
Meng Jinyao remained silent.
Zhang and Chen exchanged a glance, deciding not to say anything more. If she claimed to be innocent, how could she prove it? The maidservant beside Aunt Li was the only witness. The two of them insisted that she had pushed her, leaving her with no way to defend herself. Even if her third brother believed she hadn't done it, it would be difficult to convince the public if she wasn't punished.
Meng Jinyao sat calmly, picked up her teacup, used the lid to remove the tea leaves floating on top, took a sip, then put the teacup down and instructed the maidservant serving her, "This tea is good, but it's a bit cold. Go and get me a fresh cup of tea."
The maids serving beside her were all from Qingyuxuan. Even though they knew she might have poisoned Aunt Li, they dared not neglect her in the slightest. Upon hearing the order, they immediately responded respectfully, "Yes, this servant will go right away."
Zhang couldn't help but say, "Third sister-in-law, you're in such a state, how can you still have the mind to drink tea?"
Meng Jinyao responded matter-of-factly, "What else can I do? I'm not a doctor, I can't help Aunt Li."
Zhang: "..."
After a long pause, Madam Zhang said in a low voice, "Third sister-in-law, if you cannot prove your innocence, even if you did nothing wrong, you will still be punished. You should think about how to prove your innocence later, otherwise your third brother will not show favoritism."
Meng Jinyao nodded slightly: "Thank you for your advice, sister-in-law. Please ask someone to send me a few strong and capable servants."
Zhang asked blankly, "Huh?" and then asked, "The servants can't help you either. With my third brother around, they won't listen to your orders."
Meng Jinyao smiled and said, "I know. Once they've found us, they'll be waiting outside Qingyuxuan, ready to receive orders."
Although puzzled, Zhang still instructed her personal maid to find several strong and capable servants to wait outside.
After a long while, news came from Li Wan'er's side: Aunt Li had suffered a miscarriage.
