Chapter 87 Just Killed Someone
In the evening, Meng Jinyao had dinner with Song Xinning at a restaurant. After dinner, they strolled through the night market together. Around 7:45 PM, the two parted ways and returned to their respective residences.
Back at Wei Rui Xuan, Meng Jinyao washed up and dismissed her maid. Just as she was about to rest, she suddenly heard a noise from the right window. She turned her head sharply and saw a figure jump in.
Judging by that figure, it's a man?
This realization sent a chill down Meng Jinyao's spine, her face turned deathly pale, and she covered her mouth tightly, not daring to make a sound.
In just a few moments, Meng Jinyao had already considered countless possibilities. She had a gut feeling that someone wanted to frame her. Her husband had a hidden illness and was not at home. If a man suddenly appeared in the room, she would be finished. Being divorced would be certain, and her reputation would be ruined.
At this moment, the man had closed the window and turned around. Immediately afterward, a face as clear as a gentle breeze and a bright moon came into view.
It's Gu Jingxi.
Meng Jinyao was both surprised and astonished, but her heart finally settled down. She stared blankly at the window, then at the man, and asked, still shaken, "Husband, what... what's wrong?"
Seeing that the little girl's face was deathly pale and her eyes were clouded with a thin mist, Gu Jingxi was clearly quite frightened. He was taken aback for a moment, then realized that it was no wonder she was frightened. He stepped towards her and asked gently, "Madam, did I frighten you?"
Meng Jinyao nodded honestly, then asked with great confusion, "Why didn't you use the front door, husband? You jumped in through the window. I thought a bad guy had come in."
Gu Jingxi replied, "It's inconvenient to use the main entrance."
Why is it inconvenient?
A perfectly respectable couple is acting like they're having an affair.
Meng Jinyao was feeling very depressed, but the next moment, she smelled a fishy smell and instinctively felt something was wrong. Then she noticed the bloodstains on Gu Jingxi's clothes. There were bloodstains on his collar, sleeves, and hem, and the clothes on his left arm were also torn. He looked quite disheveled.
The fabric of the clothes was blue, making the bloodstains very obvious. At first glance, it was quite frightening, and the injury seemed to be very serious.
Looking at the blood-stained hem of her clothes, just above her chest, Meng Jinyao turned pale and asked hesitantly, "Husband, you've lost so much blood, won't you die young?"
Gu Jingxi's expression froze slightly. He scoffed softly, both amused and annoyed, and said, "Don't worry, Madam, I won't let you become a young widow."
Meng Jinyao breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Then I'll have someone go and fetch the family physician." With that, she started walking outside.
Gu Jingxi spoke up to stop him: "I'm fine, don't make a fuss, lest we disturb the elders. Have the maid prepare water, I want to take a bath."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao paused, looked at his blood-stained clothes again, and hesitated, saying, "But you've lost so much blood, can you really not see a doctor? If you're worried about Mother, I can just say I had an upset stomach and called the family physician."
Gu Jingxi gently shook her head: "I'm not injured, the blood is someone else's."
Meng Jinyao was stunned. She took a few steps forward and examined him carefully. She found that the blood had seeped into his clothes from the outside, not from his body. Even though there was a tear in the clothes on his arm, it didn't hurt his arm.
He was confirmed to be uninjured, but his clothes were stained with blood, suggesting that someone else was seriously injured. He remembered that Zhou Yun had said he had urgent business to attend to in the morning, and then he left in a hurry. Now he came back with bloodstains on his clothes, and he didn't even use the main entrance. Instead, he sneaked back through the window, trying not to be seen by anyone. It all seemed suspicious.
Meng Jinyao stared at him intently, then asked, half-seriously and half-jokingly, "Husband, you wouldn't have killed someone, would you?"
Gu Jingxi was taken aback: "How did you know?"
For a moment, Meng Jinyao doubted her ears and asked him as if seeking confirmation, "Did you really kill someone?"
Gu Jingxi countered, "Hmm, what's the problem?"
His tone was calm, as if killing was a common occurrence in his eyes.
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao's face froze, feeling somewhat horrified. Such cold-blooded and ruthless words should not have come from Gu Jingxi's mouth. She subconsciously took a step back and reminded him, "A life for a life. You are the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review. Isn't this knowingly breaking the law?"
Gu Jingxi was slightly taken aback, then laughed out loud. Seeing the fear in her eyes, she knew that she had misunderstood. If she didn't explain it clearly tonight, she would probably have nightmares if she slept next to her. So she explained, "When arresting the fugitive, the other party had a lot of subordinates. There was nothing I could do. If I showed mercy, you would become a young widow."
Meng Jinyao was stunned. This was a field she had never ventured into before. She thought that the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review was a civil official, and that civil officials did not care about fighting and killing, but only about investigating cases. But in reality, it seemed that this was not the case.
But thinking about it carefully, it's quite normal. Why would a criminal obediently let the authorities arrest him? Just like when the authorities suppress bandits, it involves a fierce battle.
A simple, weak scholar would be arrested by the constables, and it would be normal for someone like Gu Jingxi, who is skilled in both literature and martial arts, to take action himself. But she never expected that a gentle and refined man would commit murder.
After a moment, she asked hesitantly, "Has the fugitive been caught?"
Gu Jingxi nodded and said, "They have been arrested and brought to justice."
"That's good then." Meng Jinyao nodded and didn't ask any more questions. "Then I'll go and tell the maid to prepare water."
After she finished speaking, she left the room and instructed the maid on night duty to prepare water. When she returned to the room, she saw Gu Jingxi take off his blood-stained outer robe. It was probably because the other party had a lot of blood that it had soaked through the outer robe and stained his inner clothes as well. A strong smell of blood wafted over.
Meng Jinyao wrinkled her nose uncomfortably, hesitated for a moment, and then, fulfilling her duty as a wife, went to find him a clean set of clothes.
It was late at night.
The person next to her lay down. After a long while, Meng Jinyao turned her head to look. The man was lying flat with his eyes closed, obviously asleep. Thinking that her husband had killed someone today, and could still sleep so peacefully, she muttered to herself: That was killing someone, not killing a chicken, so how could he be so calm?
She had barely finished muttering to herself when the man beside her replied, "Killing too many people will calm you down."
Meng Jinyao exclaimed "Huh?", a little taken aback.
Gu Jingxi turned his head to look at her and said calmly, "Madam, you don't need to say what's on your mind next time."
Meng Jinyao's face froze, and she asked with an awkward smile, "Husband, you're still not asleep?"
Gu Jingxi raised an eyebrow: "How can you answer Madam's questions if you're asleep?"
Meng Jinyao smiled awkwardly, remained silent for a moment, and then asked curiously, "My husband has killed many people?"
Gu Jingxi replied, "Fortunately, there will always be casualties during the fighting."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao felt that killing them directly was not a good idea. They should at least be tried according to the laws of the court. So she asked, "Can't my husband arrest them alive?"
"Capture the assassins alive if possible, and interrogate them; otherwise, kill them directly." Gu Jingxi answered casually, glancing at the young girl beside him, and said gently, "The officialdom is dark, with many unknown aspects. It's best for Madam not to inquire too much."
Meng Jinyao gave a faint "Oh" and said, "Husband, please be careful."
Gu Jingxi chuckled lightly and said teasingly, "Don't worry, Madam, I won't let you become a young widow."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao recalled asking someone not long ago if they would die young, and her ears burned. She turned her face away uncomfortably, refusing to look at him.
