Chapter Forty: All Given to the Madam
Wei Rui Xuan.
The three of them, master and servant, returned to Wei Rui Xuan. Meng Jinyao wanted to do something to pass the time, but she felt as if she had forgotten something, and she couldn't remember it for a moment.
She looked at Qingqiu and asked, "Qingqiu, is there something I haven't done yet?"
Qingqiu was slightly taken aback, thought about it carefully for a moment, and then shook her head: "Madam, you didn't tell me what I needed to remind you to do recently."
"No?"
Meng Jinyao frowned slightly. Why did she feel like there was something she hadn't done?
Qingqiu shook her head again, affirming, "Really not. Is Madam confused because of recent troubles?"
Meng Jinyao was silent for a while, then nodded. It wasn't impossible. The groom ran away on the wedding day and was ridiculed by everyone in the capital. Anyone would feel unlucky if that happened to them. Fortunately, they were able to get a reasonably satisfactory groom at the last minute, so they could make do. Otherwise, they would have been miserable.
Fearing that her bad mood might make her sick, Qingqiu suggested, "Madam, if you feel depressed, why don't you invite Miss Song to go for a walk in the spring to clear your mind another day?"
Meng Jinyao nodded and said, "We'll talk about it another day. You can go now. Let me sort out what we need to do next."
Qingqiu responded and bowed before withdrawing.
As the afternoon was drawing to a close and the sun was about to set, Meng Jinyao wanted to take a walk outside when the sun was no longer too strong. Chunliu came in and reported, "Madam, the Marquis wants you to go to his study."
Meng Jinyao was taken aback, then asked, "To the study in the front yard?"
Chunliu shook her head slightly and replied respectfully, "Replying to Madam, it is the study of our Weirui Pavilion. The Marquis has just returned from outside."
Meng Jinyao asked again, "Did the Marquis say what he wanted to see me about?"
“The Marquis didn’t tell me, he only instructed me to inform the Madam.” Chunliu said, then added, “The Marquis just returned from outside, and he seemed to be in a good mood, he didn’t even frown.”
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao gave Chunliu an appreciative look. No wonder she was transferred to Weirui Pavilion as a head maid by her mother-in-law, Old Madam Gu. Chunliu was very good at reading people and knew that Meng Jinyao had doubts. She deliberately revealed Gu Jingxi's current mood so that Meng Jinyao could go to the study with peace of mind.
study.
Meng Jinyao had been to the study in the front yard, but she had never set foot in the study in Wei Ruixuan before. She pushed open the study door, stepped into the study, and subconsciously looked around. The room was simply furnished.
The study was bright and clean, with several landscape paintings hanging on the walls. The bookshelves on the right were filled with books, and on the left, by the window, sat a potted asparagus fern.
The pearwood desk was placed five steps away from the window. Gu Jingxi sat in the armchair behind the desk, his fingers lightly tapping the sandalwood box on the desk.
Upon seeing her arrive, Gu Jingxi stood up, picked up the wooden box from the desk, moved to the chair on the lower left of the desk, placed the wooden box on the small tea table between the two chairs, and said to her, "Madam, let's sit down and talk first."
Meng Jinyao responded, closed the door behind her, and sat down on another chair next to him, asking with a question, "What does my husband want with me?"
Gu Jingxi opened the wooden box, took out a key and a blue-covered booklet, placed them on the small tea table, and said gently, "Madam, this is the key to my storeroom, and this is a booklet of the storeroom's items. You can choose from this booklet if you need any gifts for social occasions when attending weddings in the future."
He paused for a moment, then took out other things from the wooden box—the deeds to the estates and shops—and placed them on top of the booklet. He continued, “These estates and shops are all my private property. Now that you’ve married into the family, I’ll entrust them to you to manage.”
Finally, Gu Jingxi took out a stack of silver notes from his sleeve, put them down, and looked up at the little girl. Compared with his two sisters-in-law and niece, the little girl's attire was quite simple, and she didn't have much jewelry.
As for her clothes, she hadn't had time to make new ones since she had just married into the family. Although the outfit she was wearing was new, the dark green color was rather dull. Luckily, she was very beautiful, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to pull off the color.
Wearing this outfit, she looks mature and composed, but it's not really suitable for a girl in her late teens. Girls this age should dress brightly, not in an old-fashioned way.
However, she doesn't seem to be the kind of person who's old-fashioned. The clothes she's wearing now were probably made for her by an embroiderer hired by her stepmother, Madam Sun. After all, she's not her biological mother, so how could she possibly be so devoted? If she weren't going to marry into the Changxing Marquis's mansion, but instead married into another family, she probably wouldn't even have new clothes made for her.
Such a beautiful girl, if the Meng family can't raise her, then he can raise her. Raising a daughter will probably be much more interesting than raising a son.
Gu Jingxi withdrew her gaze and said gently, "Although Zhonggong gives you a monthly allowance, a young lady's expenses are high, so it may not be enough. Take this silver note first. If you need to buy any clothes or jewelry, feel free to spend it. Don't be stingy."
Meng Jinyao was stunned by the series of important news and couldn't come to her senses for a long time. She stared blankly at Gu Jingxi.
A moment later, she glanced down at the things on the small tea table. She didn't open the booklet to see what was recorded, but there were quite a few silver notes, a thick stack, and it seemed there were several deeds to estates and shops.
Having lived for sixteen years and never seen so much money before, she stared blankly at the sight of it, deeply shocked.
She asked, flattered, "Husband, you...you're letting me manage all of this?"
Gu Jingxi replied matter-of-factly, "Men are in charge of external affairs and women are in charge of internal affairs. These things should have been handed over to Madam a few days ago, but I only remembered them today."
Meng Jinyao was surprised and found it hard to believe that Gu Jingxi would entrust her with managing these assets. She asked hesitantly, "Husband, aren't you afraid that I might have some ulterior motives?"
Gu Jingxi frowned, narrowed his eyes and glanced at her, asking in a low voice, "Does Madam intend to secretly use my money to support a gigolo?"
Meng Jinyao shook her head repeatedly: "I haven't thought about it, and I won't think about it."
Gu Jingxi then asked, "So, Madam, do you intend to use my money to subsidize your family?" He paused slightly, then added, "It's not that I'm stingy with the money, but your family isn't worth supporting. You could use this spare money to buy more jewelry."
Meng Jinyao shook her head again: "No, that won't happen."
She must be crazy to support the Meng family. Apart from her second brother, Meng Chengzhang, the rest of the Meng family are no good. She won't stand idly by if her second brother gets into trouble, but she won't care about the others.
Gu Jingxi nodded with a smile: "Since you don't know how to do it, Madam, you can keep these. If you don't know how to manage the estate and shops, just follow the original management model. The managers are all trustworthy people, and Madam can check the accounts regularly."
After saying that, he put everything into the wooden box and handed it to the little girl.
