Chapter Twenty: The Return of the Rebellious Son
On the carriage.
Gu Jingxi looked at his young wife sitting opposite him. The girl had a smile on her lips and her eyes were curved. She seemed to be in a very good mood, probably because she had gotten her revenge. He asked, "Are you very happy?"
Meng Jinyao couldn't stop smiling and frankly admitted, "I am quite happy. It is said that when civil officials want to please someone, they can definitely make that person's heart flutter, but when they want to anger someone, they can also anger someone to death. Today I have finally seen it."
After she finished speaking, her smile deepened. She really didn't expect Gu Jingxi to be so strong, and she didn't expect Gu Jingxi to speak to her family like that. She originally thought that Gu Jingxi was just being polite and perfunctory.
Gu Jingxi choked. Why did the little girl sound like she was scolding someone when she was praising them? He chuckled and said, "Isn't Madam quite talkative in front of me? Why does she become mute when she returns to her parents' home?"
"My husband is too strong in battle, there's no chance for me to use my skills," Meng Jinyao replied seriously. She would never admit that she just wanted to watch the show. She added, "This is the first time I've seen them all get a beating. Thank you, my husband."
Gu Jingxi replied, "Madam's words did remind me. If you lose face, I will lose face too. I am helping myself. Madam, you don't need to thank me."
Meng Jinyao pursed her lips, sensing that this person couldn't accept being thanked. She glanced at him and couldn't help but retort, "I didn't say you were helping me; I was just thanking you politely."
Gu Jingxi choked up: "..."
That's really impolite. Isn't this child a little unlikable? Oh well, it's rare for the little girl to be so lively, I won't hold it against her.
After a moment, Gu Jingxi asked carefully, "Madam, you are the eldest daughter of the family and the first child of the Meng family's grandchildren. You should be valued by the family. Why is this happening?" He had never investigated this girl before, as she was his prospective daughter-in-law. He only knew that she was a generous and proper girl, but he never expected her to be such a pitiful little thing.
Meng Jinyao was slightly taken aback, then calmly replied, "I lost my mother right after I was born, and my grandmother thought I was a jinx. My father didn't care about me, and my stepmother was kind on the surface but cruel on the inside. My grandfather and your father were close friends. My grandfather was afraid that the Meng family would mistreat me after his death, so he asked for this marriage. For the sake of benefits, the Meng family won't go too far."
Gu Jingxi found the Meng family's actions absurd and frowned slightly: "Having children is inherently risky; it's Old Madam Meng who's being foolish."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao chuckled. Her grandmother was quite ignorant. She then asked, half-seriously and half-jokingly, "Isn't my husband afraid that I'll bring bad luck to him?"
Gu Jingxi raised an eyebrow and said calmly, "Even if I die a violent death one day, it's not something a little girl like you can control, unless you're planning to murder your husband."
Meng Jinyao said frankly, "No, it's good to have a big tree to lean on."
Gu Jingxi was slightly taken aback, then said, "Madam is quite clever."
Meng Jinyao blinked, smiling innocently, and didn't reply. She would be crazy to murder Gu Jingxi. With Gu Jingxi dead, she would become a widow, a childless widow in a miserable situation. With Gu Jingxi around, at least she wouldn't be easily bullied.
Not long after, Gu Jingxi got off the carriage because he had other things to do, and told Meng Jinyao to go back first.
It was still early, and Meng Jinyao didn't plan to go back so soon. She had lunch outside before heading home.
Meng Jinyao had just returned to Weirui Pavilion and hadn't even warmed her seat when Chunliu, the original first-class maid of Weirui Pavilion, wanted to curry favor with her and whispered, "Madam, the young master has just been brought back, along with the girl who eloped with him. They're locked up in the study in the front courtyard."
As soon as Chunliu finished speaking, Meng Jinyao's eyes lit up. Suddenly intrigued, she said with an ambiguous tone, "My son is back? Then I'll go see him first."
