Chapter Ninety-Seven: Another Nightmare
That night, Meng Jinyao had that dream again.
In the dream, Chengyu cried and refused to drink his medicine. Aunt Du tried to coax him gently for a while, but it was no use. She watched as the sickly little guy's face turned red from crying, and even his breathing became disordered.
Aunt Du was afraid that the child would cry himself to death, so she didn't dare to force him to drink the medicine anymore. She just gently comforted him, "Chengyu, be good. If Chengyu doesn't want to drink it, then he won't drink it." As she spoke, she gave the maid next to her a look.
The maid nodded and immediately went to find reinforcements.
However, just as the maid was about to leave, Xiao Meng Jinyao arrived.
When Aunt Du saw her, she looked at her as if she had seen a savior and smiled gently: "Young lady, you're here. Chengyu refuses to drink his medicine again. Come and coax him. He listens to you the most."
"Big...hiccup...Big sister."
When Chengyu saw her, he immediately stopped crying and reached out to her for a hug.
Little Meng Jinyao ran over with her short legs and was carried to bed by a maid. She reached out and hugged her sickly little brother, coaxing him in a childish voice, "Chengyu, be good. You'll be almost better after this dose. When you're better, big sister will take you to play." As she spoke, she gave a soft snort, "If you're not good, big sister will take Chengzhang and ignore you from now on."
Upon hearing this, Chengyu felt as if the sky was about to fall. He continued to drink the medicine while crying. With each sip, his little eyebrows furrowed, his little mouth pursed, and tears streamed down his face. It was clear that the medicine was truly awful, but he dared not refuse to drink it.
At this moment, Meng Jinyao rushed into the room and saw the scene inside. She felt a chill run down her spine. Aunt Du was holding a bowl of medicine, and two-year-old Chengyu was being held by a maid. Five-year-old Meng Jinyao was feeding Chengyu medicine spoonful by spoonful.
"No, don't drink it! You can't drink it!"
She yelled, but they didn't hear her at all.
Seeing that they were unmoved, she took two steps at a time, preparing to reach out and knock the medicine out of Aunt Du's hand. However, when she slapped it, it went straight through the medicine bowl, which was still in Aunt Du's hand.
Seeing this, she became extremely anxious and frantically tried to knock over the medicine in Aunt Du's hand and snatch the spoon from Xiao Meng Jinyao's hand.
But no matter how hard she tried, it was all in vain.
The whole bowl of medicine went into Chengyu's stomach. The little guy was sick and his body was already weak. He had also cried and fussed for a while, so he fell into a deep sleep after drinking the medicine.
Chengyu took the medicine, but his condition did not improve; in fact, it worsened. Aunt Du suspected there was something wrong with the prescription, so she had her trusted maid secretly take the prescription to another doctor. The doctor said there was nothing wrong with the prescription; the medicine was mild, but it was slow to take effect. However, it was suitable for children, and children should not take medicine that was too strong. Just follow the prescription.
But Aunt Du miscalculated: the prescription itself was fine, but problems would arise during the decoction process.
When Chengyu died young, Aunt Du fainted on the spot, fell seriously ill, and eventually passed away.
She watched the tragedy unfold like an outsider, unable to do anything but break down in tears.
-
Gu Jingxi was a light sleeper. He slowly woke up when he heard sobbing beside him. Still a little groggy, he turned his head and saw the little girl's shoulders trembling slightly. Instantly, all sleepiness vanished.
This little girl has a strong will. He had never seen her shed tears before. How could she suddenly be crying like this?
Confused, Gu Jingxi asked gently, "Madam, what's wrong?"
After a moment of silence, there was no reply, but the sobbing continued. Gu Jingxi hesitated for a while before reaching out to turn the little girl over. To his surprise, he saw her with her brows furrowed, her eyes closed, tears streaming from the corners of her eyes, and her sobbing uncontrollably.
Seemingly because she felt insecure lying flat, she turned to her side, curled up, and continued to cry.
This must be a nightmare.
Gu Jingxi watched the little girl cry, and the crying grew louder and louder. He had no experience in comforting children and was at a loss, not knowing what to do. If this continued, he wondered what the maid on night duty outside would think if she heard it.
He thought for a moment, then awkwardly patted the little girl's back and coaxed her gently, "Don't cry, Madam, it's alright, don't cry."
Meng Jinyao didn't know if she heard the sound, but she subconsciously moved closer to him and continued to cry next to him.
Gu Jingxi had no choice but to resign himself to his fate and coax her to shut up quickly, otherwise it would be bad if someone heard her crying in the middle of the night. Even if nothing was wrong, people would misunderstand.
"Madam, don't cry, don't cry, it's just a nightmare."
Gu Jingxi gently coaxed her. Perhaps it was his gentle and unhurried voice that made people feel safe, but the little girl's crying gradually subsided, though she showed no signs of waking up.
The crying gradually subsided, and Gu Jingxi secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at the little girl who had rolled into his arms, clinging to him with her hands and feet, and he couldn't push her away no matter what he tried.
By the moonlight, he could clearly see the little girl in his arms with her soft pink cheeks, slender neck, and slightly parted cherry lips, looking both charming and innocent.
For the first time in twenty-nine years, Gu Jingxi had been so intimate with a young woman, their bodies pressed tightly together. The girl's sweet fragrance filled the air, and he barely slept a wink all night, his body stiff as he let the young woman hug him.
He didn't fall asleep until dawn.
Early morning, the first rays of dawn.
Meng Jinyao slowly woke up and was about to rub her eyes when she immediately realized something was wrong. She suddenly opened her eyes wide and found herself lying on Gu Jingxi's arm, using both her hands and feet to climb on top of him. One hand was wrapped around his neck, the other around his waist, and one leg was draped over his leg.
This embarrassing and terrifying sleeping position terrified her.
Meng Jinyao instantly woke up, all sleepiness gone, her heart pounding, so nervous she dared not breathe. She couldn't understand why she, who had always slept so well, had become restless last night.
She looked up slightly and saw that Gu Jingxi's eyes were closed and he hadn't woken up yet. She breathed a sigh of relief and carefully stepped out of Gu Jingxi's arms. Seeing that the man was still asleep, she was completely at ease.
fine.
Thankfully, she's still asleep. I don't know she was a restless sleeper last night, otherwise she would have wanted to crawl into a hole.
Not long after, Gu Jingxi slowly 'woke up'. Seeing the little girl staring straight at him, he said casually, "Good morning, Madam."
Meng Jinyao was startled by him, and forced a smile: "Good morning, husband."
Seeing Gu Jingxi move his arm uncomfortably, her heart tightened. She guiltily looked away and asked nervously, "Husband, is your hand uncomfortable?"
Gu Jingxi glanced at her and saw that she was too guilty to look at him. He smiled faintly and said in a low voice, "It's nothing. My arm just feels a little tired, as if something has been pressing down on it. Maybe it's because I haven't moved around for too long."
Meng Jinyao's expression tightened, and she secretly glanced at him. Seeing that his expression was normal, she said, "Then my husband should move around more. I'll get up first."
After saying that, she sat up, stepped over Gu Jingxi's body, got off the bed, and summoned a maid to serve her.
