Chapter 213 Quietly Testing the Waters
Gu Jingxi returned late today, around dusk, just in time for dinner.
Meng Jinyao realized her little secret that she didn't want others to discover. Now, seeing Gu Jingxi, she felt conflicted and depressed. She had no appetite, but she still had to stuff food into her mouth so as not to go hungry.
She chose to marry Gu Jingxi because his status and position would protect her. After marrying Gu Jingxi, Gu Xiuming couldn't bully her, and she didn't dare to ask for anything else.
Now, she realized that she had developed other feelings for Gu Jingxi without even knowing whether he had feelings for her.
She felt uneasy and a little scared, afraid that she would be greedy and want both status and affection. She was afraid that she would become someone else.
Gu Jingxi naturally noticed that something was wrong with the girl. She was fine yesterday, but today she had reverted to her old ways. Perhaps the girl was feeling down because of her family's situation, and her emotions were fluctuating. However, he could only take her out when he was on leave.
After dinner, Gu Jingxi dismissed the maids and said earnestly, "Madam, you can tell me if you have any troubles. Keeping them inside will make you sick. I've told you more than once before that we are husband and wife. You should trust me more. Husband and wife are one, sharing honor and disgrace. We can solve any problems together."
Hearing this, Meng Jinyao felt a warmth in her heart and gently shook her head: "Actually, it's nothing. Maybe I was just overthinking things and couldn't adjust my mindset."
Seeing that she still wouldn't speak, Gu Jingxi sighed almost imperceptibly and said, "Madam has always been insightful, so why has she suddenly become so stubborn?"
Meng Jinyao naturally couldn't tell the truth, so she could only find a convincing excuse to brush it off. After thinking for a while, she replied, "My family's affairs are distressing, and I'm eager for revenge, but some things need to be planned slowly and implemented step by step, so my mentality has become problematic as I think about them."
Upon hearing this, Gu Jingxi revealed an expression of "I knew it," and then said gently, "Madam, you've waited for so many years, what's a few more months? What do you think? It's not worth it to worry too much about her and make yourself sick."
Meng Jinyao nodded in response, forcing a smile, and added, "Don't worry, my husband, I'll gradually calm down."
Seeing this, Gu Jingxi didn't know what to say to comfort her, so he could only stay quietly with her.
But Meng Jinyao felt awkward and uncomfortable being with him, so she thought of finding an excuse to leave. She hurriedly ordered her maid to prepare water for a bath. After bathing, she lay down on the bed, but she couldn't fall asleep. After a long time, she heard noises outside, so she turned around, turned her back to the man, and pretended to be asleep.
Afraid of waking her, Gu Jingxi quietly tidied up and then lay down to sleep.
Meng Jinyao closed her eyes and strained her ears to listen to the movements behind her. She knew that the man had already lain down and that she was now "asleep," but the man hadn't yet secretly hugged her, which confused her again.
Mingming woke up yesterday morning to find Gu Jingxi holding her. She was awake but Gu Jingxi was still asleep, so he must have secretly pulled her into his arms during the night and hadn't had a chance to let her go before she discovered it.
What's going on tonight?
Does this mean they're not going to hug me anymore?
Or was it that Gu Jingxi unconsciously wanted to hug the blanket that night, and hugged her as if she were the blanket, and then she misunderstood?
Meng Jinyao's thoughts were racing, and she felt frustrated. Suddenly, a brilliant idea flashed into her mind, but she hesitated to put it into action.
After a while, sensing that the person behind her was about to fall asleep, she steeled herself, pretended to unconsciously turn over, and then turned over again after a while, turning further and further away until she ended up in Gu Jingxi's arms. Finally, she pretended to unconsciously use him as a blanket and continued to sleep.
Her idea was simple: she wanted to test Gu Jingxi and see what he would do, whether he would push her away while he was sober.
Gu Jingxi was almost asleep when a little girl suddenly rolled into his arms, instantly waking him up completely. He was a bit dazed, but being experienced, he didn't freeze up and not know how to react like before.
He whispered in her ear, "Madam."
"Hmm~"
Meng Jinyao responded seemingly unconsciously, hugging him even tighter. She buried her face in his chest with this action, otherwise she would have to move her eyelids and people would find out that she was pretending to be asleep.
Gu Jingxi was surprised, not expecting her to react this way. Thinking that he had disturbed her sleep, he reached out and gently patted her back, saying softly, "Go to sleep, it's alright."
It was a bit hot for the two of them to be together in the summer. Gu Jingxi sighed almost inaudibly. He didn't want to push her away. The palm-leaf fan was at the far end of the bed, out of his reach. So he gently picked her up, moved her inside to get the fan, and then slowly lay down, fanning himself gently with the fan.
Because of Gu Jingxi's reaction, Meng Jinyao's mind was unusually clear, but she didn't dare to move. She nestled in Gu Jingxi's arms and continued to pretend to be asleep, her mind racing.
She hugged Gu Jingxi like this, with such an intimate gesture, and Gu Jingxi didn't push her away. That night, Gu Jingxi secretly held her while she slept, and then held her until dawn, right?
Gu Jingxi, a person of upright character, hadn't dared to look at her before because her nightgown was too thin. He only got used to it later. Now that their bodies were so close, Gu Jingxi didn't push her away and treated her so gently.
You really can't blame her for being delusional.
She felt that Gu Jingxi probably had those kinds of feelings for her, otherwise why would he accept her actions? If he couldn't accept it, he could have pushed her away even if she was asleep.
Time passed by unnoticed, and with someone fanning her, Meng Jinyao gradually became sleepy. Listening to the man's strong and powerful heartbeat and smelling the faint orchid fragrance on his body, she drifted off to sleep.
However, Gu Jingxi was not sleepy. The little girl clung to him like an octopus, and he had to accommodate her sleeping position. Fortunately, after a long time, the little girl stopped hugging him so tightly, and he was able to slowly adjust his sleeping position.
He looked down at the person in his arms. Perhaps because she had been cooped up in his arms for a long time, the little girl's face was sweaty, her cheeks were flushed, and her hair was stuck to her face, giving her a somewhat messy and innocent look.
Looking at that cute and adorable little face.
He was lost in thought, his emotions a little complicated, and he slowly stopped fanning himself.
He didn't know when he finally fell asleep, but when he woke up the next morning, the little girl was still in his arms.

My darlings, are you amazed that I'm posting eight chapters in one day?
Actually, this is a low-probability situation, and it almost never happens to me. This is the first time in all the years I've been writing. Eight chapters, which would take almost twenty hours to write. Today was completely unexpected. I had nothing to do, and I just happened to have some inspiration. I was also competing with a friend, so the result was obvious. I won with eight chapters, hahaha.
After finishing writing, I felt like my hands weren't even mine anymore, and my mind was completely blank. I'll start updating two chapters a day tomorrow, and if I'm inspired, I might update three or eight chapters... I'll come back if fate allows, but it's probably not going to happen again.
