Chapter 157 He Regretted It
Qingyuxuan.
Gu Xiuming returned from Shou'an Hall and had just entered the room when he saw a beautiful figure rushing towards him. He quickly reached out and hugged her, taking two steps back.
"Brother Xiuming, you're finally back."
The girl in his arms was speaking in a muffled voice, as if she were crying.
Gu Xiuming's heart tightened, and he quickly asked, "Wan'er, what's wrong? Did someone bully you while I was away?"
Li Wan'er slowly raised her head, her eyes brimming with tears, on the verge of sobbing. Her eyes were filled with worry as she choked out, "Brother Xiuming, I'm so scared, so very scared."
Gu Xiuming couldn't bear to see her cry, so he gently patted her back and coaxed her softly, "Wan'er, don't be afraid, I'm here. Did something happen? If anyone bullied you, I'll stand up for you and punish those ignorant maids properly."
"No, no one bullied me."
Li Wan'er gently shook her head, tears instantly welling up and sliding down her cheeks. She said worriedly, "Brother Xiuming, you went out this morning, saying you were going to Weirui Pavilion to pay your respects to the Marquis and his wife, but you haven't come back for so long. I'm afraid that the wife will make things difficult for you or do something bad to you, but I don't dare to go to Weirui Pavilion to find you. You know that the wife doesn't like me. I don't dare to go to Weirui Pavilion, and I don't even dare to leave Qingyu Pavilion."
As she spoke, she buried her head in Gu Xiuming's arms and sobbed softly, her slender shoulders trembling, a pitiful sight.
Gu Xiuming was truly heartbroken. Thinking that Wan'er hadn't left Qingyuxuan for a long time, he remembered that during his confinement, Wan'er had left Qingyuxuan once, but she was bullied by his arrogant and domineering younger sister and even slapped. His younger sister had been spoiled by his aunt and was arrogant and disrespectful. She even dared to hit his beloved girl. It was probably because he had been punished with confinement and lost the favor of his elders.
He said gently, "Wan'er, don't worry, I wasn't bothered by anyone. After I came out of Wei Rui Xuan, I went to Shou An Tang to pay my respects to my grandmother, and then I had lunch with her before coming back, which is why it took me so long."
Hearing this, Li Wan'er felt relieved and stopped crying.
Gu Xiuming pulled him to sit down and continued, "Wan'er, don't be afraid in the future. As long as you haven't done anything wrong, no one will bully you without knowing the facts. You can go out of Qingyuxuan and take a walk outside."
"Never mind, Qingyuxuan is fine, and I don't like going out anyway."
Li Wan'er smiled bitterly as she spoke. Although she had Xiu Ming's wholehearted love, she had no status in the Changxing Marquis's mansion. She was practically a servant, only slightly higher than a maid. Every master in the mansion could bully her, and she didn't want to go out and humiliate herself. If she hadn't eloped with Xiu Ming, perhaps the people in the mansion wouldn't look down on her like this now.
Upon hearing this, Gu Xiuming knew what she was worried about and said apologetically, "Wan'er, it's all my fault. Because of me, you have suffered so much."
Li Wan'er quickly shook her head: "Brother Xiuming, how can you blame yourself?"
Gu Xiuming pulled her into his arms, filled with remorse: "Wan'er, if only I hadn't run away from our marriage and eloped with you, you wouldn't have been ridiculed."
Upon hearing this, Li Wan'er suddenly looked up, her face pale, and asked in a trembling voice, "Brother Xiuming, do you regret being with me? Do you regret not marrying Meng Jinyao? Yes, I am just an orphan, while Meng Jinyao is the eldest daughter of the Earl's family. Marrying her would be so prestigious. Being with me would only bring you shame."
As she spoke, tears streamed down her face again, falling like beads from a broken string. Her pale face looked weak and pitiful, making one's heart ache.
Gu Xiuming quickly explained, "Wan'er, what are you thinking? How could I regret being with you? You are the only one in my heart. I only regret not breaking off the engagement. If I had broken off the engagement, I would have asked my father and grandmother for their consent and then married you, making you a glorious wife of the heir."
Li Wan'er asked with a hint of doubt, "Really?"
"Of course it's true."
Gu Xiuming nodded, reached out and wiped away the tears on her cheeks. Seeing her crying so hard, he felt terrible.
Li Wan'er choked up and said, "Brother Xiuming, you're all I have left. If you ever stop liking me, I'll have nothing left."
Gu Xiuming coaxed her gently, "Silly girl, how could I not like you? If I didn't like you, I would have married Meng Jinyao long ago. In my heart, Wan'er is the best and kindest girl in the world."
Upon hearing this, Li Wan'er's anxious heart was soothed. She stared blankly at the young man in front of her. He was handsome and elegant, and she liked him. When she first saw him in the temple, even though he had fainted from snake venom, his noble and handsome appearance captivated her at first sight. She was not afraid of getting into trouble and immediately went to find people from the temple to save him.
Later, she discovered that the young man was the heir of the Marquis of Changxing's mansion and had a fiancée. Although the fiancée was from a poor family, she was still the eldest daughter of an earl's family, a girl she could never hope to reach in her life. She was truly jealous of that girl for being able to win the heart of the young man she loved. Fortunately, in the end, the young man chose her.
It was only then that Li Wan'er belatedly noticed his forehead injury. Looking at him with concern, she asked, "Brother Xiuming, what happened to your forehead?"
Gu Xiuming paused for a moment, then gently touched his injured forehead before saying calmly, "Go apologize to Mother and Grandmother. You got this from kowtowing. It's been treated with medicine, so it's nothing serious. Don't worry, Wan'er."
Li Wan'er was taken aback: "Why do we have to kowtow to apologize?"
"Kowtowing shows sincerity, but just talking makes you seem insincere." Gu Xiuming's expression was inscrutable, his eyes dark and unfathomable. He looked down at his beloved girl and solemnly promised, "Wan'er, I will never let anyone bully you again. I will protect you and make you the happiest person."
Li Wan'er listened, but she didn't quite believe it. If even Brother Xiuming was being punished, how could he protect her? Unless Brother Xiuming became a marquis in the future, then no one would be able to bully her.
However, she only thought these words in her heart and did not say them out loud. She smiled gently and replied softly, "Brother Xiuming, I believe you will protect me."
Seeing her smile, Gu Xiuming's lips also curled up, and he lowered his head to place a kiss on her forehead.
Li Wan'er smiled shyly, buried her face in his chest again, and whispered, "Brother Xiuming, I want to have a child soon. Please give me a child."
Gu Xiuming was taken aback: "Why do you suddenly want a child so much?"
Li Wan'er replied, "I heard from the maid that the eldest young mistress is pregnant. The eldest master and mistress are about to become grandparents, and they are very happy. They are all smiles every day. Let's have a child too. Maybe the Marquis will be happy if we have a child."
As she spoke, she touched her flat stomach. They had never used contraception, but there was still no sign of pregnancy in her belly. She was quite anxious, guessing it was because they hadn't tried hard enough. Once she had a child, the eldest grandson or granddaughter of the third wife, her status would improve and her situation would turn around.
Gu Xiuming was taken aback for a moment, then whispered ambiguously in her ear, "Okay, starting tonight, I'll try my best."
