Chapter 406 Both Injured
Gu Jingxi quickly bent down to avoid the assassin's sword aimed at his neck. He then swung his longsword backward, the tip flashing and slicing across the neck of the assassin behind him. Blood splattered everywhere. He then took the opportunity to kick the assassin, who fell to the ground.
It was a close call, but we escaped danger and were safe.
Meng Jinyao was still in shock, her heart pounding wildly. She looked at the assassin lying on the ground. The assassin was still breathing, but blood was gushing from his neck. Even if he tried to stop it with his hands, he couldn't. He soon lost his life and died with his eyes wide open, staring in her direction. Meng Jinyao quickly looked away.
The four people were fighting, their moves were extremely fast and each one deadly. The sight of flashing swords and shadows was terrifying. After a long while, the assassin whose sword had been taken by Gu Jingxi was killed by a single sword to the throat.
Facing two opponents alone, Gu Jingxi handled the situation with ease. Before long, another assassin fell with a sword in his chest, leaving only one assassin. Gu Jingxi planned to capture him alive, but the assassin committed suicide instead.
The room was in disarray, with broken tables and chairs, and four corpses lying in the room. Blood was splattered on the walls, furniture, and floor, and the room reeked of blood. Meanwhile, the sounds of fighting next door had not stopped.
Gu Jingxi glanced at his little wife hiding in the corner. Seeing that she was pale with fright and trembling all over, his heart clenched. He quickly dropped the blood-stained sword in his hand, walked over to her, and hugged her into his arms, gently coaxing her, "Ayao, don't be afraid, it's alright now."
Meng Jinyao slumped in the man's arms, her body still trembling uncontrollably. She had seen people die before; when she was young, she saw her grandfather pass away, his breath fading right before her eyes. But now, seeing four people dead, their blood splattered everywhere, their eyes wide open and staring at her, she couldn't suppress her fear and couldn't face it with a calm heart.
Gu Jingxi gently patted her back and continued to coax her, "Ayao, don't be afraid, it's alright, it's all over now."
"My husband, I... I'm fine."
Meng Jinyao slowly raised her head to look at him. When she saw the blood on his face, she quickly reached out to wipe it away. But when her hands were covered in blood, she thought of the four corpses on the ground. This blood was theirs, and she suddenly felt that the blood was dirty. She quickly wiped the blood on her hands onto her clothes.
Seeing this, Gu Jingxi hugged her even tighter and said guiltily, "Ayao, did I scare you?"
Meng Jinyao shook her head repeatedly: "No, they all have to die. If my husband doesn't kill them, we will be the ones who get into trouble."
Gu Jingxi gently coaxed the person in his arms. The fighting outside had stopped. Zhou Yun came over to check and saw their lord holding his wife and coaxing her. There were also four men in black lying on the ground.
Zhou Yun asked, "Lord Marquis, Madam, are you alright?"
Gu Jingxi replied, "We're fine. How many people came tonight? Are any of our men injured?"
Zhou Yun replied, "Including the four on the ground, there are a total of fifteen people here, all of whom are skilled fighters. Fang Ce and Chan'er were injured. Fang Ce's injury was minor, just an arm injury, and he is not seriously injured, but Chan'er's injury was quite serious."
Gu Jingxi frowned and ordered, "Go and fetch a doctor immediately."
Zhou Yun agreed and immediately went to do it.
Meng Jinyao's emotions gradually calmed down, becoming much more stable than before. She tried to keep her voice calm as she said, "Husband, this room is very messy. Let's go out first."
Gu Jingxi nodded slightly. Seeing a corpse lying at the door, he picked the person up and carried them out of the guest room.
At this moment, everyone else in the inn was in a panic. The innkeeper only dared to come out with his staff after the fighting stopped. They had just come out when they ran into Gu Jingxi at the bottom of the stairs. The innkeeper and his staff wanted to leave but didn't know whether to stay or not, fearing they would be silenced.
When Gu Jingxi saw him, she said gently, "Shopkeeper, please give us four clean rooms. We will compensate you for the losses tonight. We are really sorry for the trouble we have caused you tonight."
The innkeeper was afraid of him and didn't really want them to stay any longer, but he dared not disobey him. He quickly replied, "Alright, honored guests, please wait a moment." He then instructed the waiter to prepare clean rooms for them.
Afterwards, Gu Jingxi and Meng Jinyao went to see Chan'er and the others, while Yu Chuan and Fang Ce were cleaning up the bodies of the men in black.
Meng Jinyao entered the guest room where Chan'er was, only to find it in a mess. The body had been removed, and Chan'er lay on the bed with a pale face, a sword wound in her chest, her injuries quite severe.
Qingqiu's face was pale as she trembled as she applied medicine and bandaged Chan'er's wounds. Chan'er was injured because she protected her and took a sword for her; otherwise, she would have been a dead man by the assassin's sword long ago.
Seeing this, Meng Jinyao rushed to the bedside and asked worriedly, "Chan'er, how are you feeling?"
Chan'er was still awake. When she saw her arrive, she forced a smile and replied softly, "Madam, don't worry, I'm fine. It's just a minor injury. I've had much worse injuries before."
Hearing that she spoke weakly, Meng Jinyao became even more worried and quickly said, "Chan'er, don't speak yet. Zhou Yun has already gone to fetch a doctor."
Not long after, the doctor arrived.
Besides the doctor, government officials and soldiers also arrived. With so many people dead, the shopkeeper didn't know whether Gu Jingxi and his group were good or bad people, so he secretly sent his assistant to report to the authorities.
Gu Jingxi and his group had identification documents. The Marquis of Changxing and his wife were assassinated in this place, and they were the victims. Naturally, the government would not arrest them. After some negotiation, they only took away the bodies of the assassins.
Fang Ce only suffered a superficial injury to his arm; he could treat it himself with some medicine and didn't need a doctor's visit.
The doctor only treated Chan'er, saying that Chan'er's injuries were serious and that she would likely develop a fever tonight, which could be life-threatening. He prescribed medicine and told them to take good care of her and have someone stay by her side to monitor her condition at all times.
Gu Jingxi thought that A Yao and Qing Qiu had been frightened, so he asked the doctor to prescribe some calming tea for them.
Yu Chuan was going to get medicine for them, so he simply went back with the doctor.
Gu Jingxi and his group moved to the guest rooms newly prepared by the innkeeper, and asked the staff to prepare water so they could take a bath to wash away the smell of blood and change into clean clothes.
By the time we finished doing all that, it was almost dawn.
Meng Jinyao wasn't sleepy either, so she decided not to sleep at all. She asked Gu Jingxi softly, "Husband, do you think Lord Wei discovered that the account books and letters were missing? Were all these people sent by Lord Wei?"
Gu Jingxi frowned and replied, "Although the people who came tonight are not top-tier experts, they are all quite skilled. I doubt he has the ability to send out so many experts. Yu Chuan has been keeping an eye on him these past few days. He has people around him who know martial arts and are quite skilled, but he doesn't have that many experts."
Meng Jinyao asked in surprise, "So that means Lord Han was involved?"
Gu Jingxi nodded slightly: "That's right. Those letters have implicated Lord Han as well. He will try every means to prevent us from returning to the capital alive and will take back the account books and letters to destroy them."
