Chapter Forty-Eight: She Doesn't Want You
When had Meng Jinyu ever suffered such injustice?
From birth, she was the apple of her parents' eye, and her grandmother also doted on her. Apart from Chengxing, she was the most pampered person in the family. Now, however, she was humiliated by her eldest sister because of a necklace.
Feeling utterly ashamed and furious, she immediately untied the necklace from her neck, raised her hand, and slapped it across Meng Jinyao's face, cursing angrily, "Here you go, you heartless ingrate!"
Gu Jingxi reacted quickly, catching the necklace before it hit Meng Jinyao's face. He glanced at her coldly and said, "Second Miss Meng, intentionally injuring someone is punishable by beheading and public humiliation, or by caning. Would you rather be beheaded or caned?"
Having served as an official for many years and now holding a high position, he exudes considerable authority. When he looks over with a stern face, he creates an invisible pressure.
Meng Jinyu was so frightened that her face turned pale, and she ran away crying.
Meng Chengxing was only twelve years old, the youngest among them. He was so frightened that he shrank back, glanced fearfully at Gu Jingxi, and then ran away in the direction of Meng Jinyu.
Looking at his two children so unruly, Meng Dongyuan felt embarrassed and disappointed. It was all because Sun Shi had spoiled the children too much, and they were not as composed as their rebellious daughter, A Yao.
Gu Jingxi smiled faintly: "Lord Meng said before that he doted on A Yao the most. I was half-believing him, but after seeing him today, I realize it's true."
Meng Jinyao: "???"
Meng Dongyuan: "???"
The father and daughter were dumbfounded. The former was confused about what kind of trouble he was planning, while the latter was afraid of what kind of trouble he might cause and feared that he would come after them.
Gu Jingxi said calmly, "Although Lord Meng doesn't dote on A Yao, he does love her the most. At least he taught her manners, how to distinguish right from wrong, and how to stay calm in the face of adversity. On the other hand, Madam Meng's two children are not loved by Lord Meng. He doesn't even bother to teach them manners and lets them grow up wildly."
Meng Jinyao looked up and glanced at him strangely. This person looked serious, but he knew very well how to be sarcastic and sarcastic towards others.
Meng Dongyuan's barely managed smile crumbled instantly at those words, leaving him extremely embarrassed. Not wanting to offend Gu Jingxi, he could only awkwardly reply, "I'm sorry to have made you laugh, son-in-law. It is true that I have neglected to discipline them in the past, and I will definitely strengthen their education in the future."
Gu Jingxi nodded slightly and said, "After all, they are Lord Meng's own flesh and blood. We can't favor one over the other. We should treat them the same way we treat A Yao. What does Lord Meng think?"
His tone was calm, revealing neither joy nor anger, but anyone who wasn't stupid could tell from his words that he was there to interrogate him.
Meng Dongyuan understood the meaning behind his words. He felt a chill run up from the soles of his feet. He raised his hand to wipe the cold sweat that had just seeped from his forehead and replied repeatedly, "Yes, my son-in-law is right. I should treat these children equally."
Gu Jingxi said, "It's getting late, we should head back to the manor first."
Upon hearing this, Meng Dongyuan breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Then I'll see my son-in-law off."
“No need, Lord Meng, please take care of your family matters first.” Gu Jingxi said, and then handed the necklace in her hand to Meng Dongyuan. “This is one of the dowry items that my mother-in-law left for Ayao. Since Madam Meng wants to take stock of the valuables, please give this to her as well, so that we can make sure that nothing is missing.”
When Meng Dongyuan heard Gu Jingxi refer to his first wife, Zhou, as his mother-in-law, but call him and Sun "Uncle Meng" and "Madam Meng," it was clear that Gu Jingxi did not acknowledge his relationship with Sun.
He was clearly the father-in-law, and Gu Jingxi was the son-in-law, his junior, yet he showed him no respect whatsoever for an elder.
Although he was dissatisfied, he dared not say anything, and awkwardly responded. Then he walked over to Gu Jingxi, took the necklace, and instructed the butler to escort the couple.

On the other side, as soon as they left the Yongchang Marquis's residence, Meng Jinyao naturally let go of Gu Jingxi's arm and walked towards the carriage. Judging from her light steps, it was clear that she was in a very good mood.
Gu Jingxi looked down at his arm and couldn't help but find it funny. Just moments ago, this girl had taken the initiative to hold his hand affectionately, acting as a loving couple with him. Now that she had used him, she threw him away without hesitation.
Qingqiu and Ningdong helped their master into the carriage. After hesitating for a while, they decided not to follow. They wondered if the Marquis would ride in the same carriage as their master. When they saw the Marquis following closely behind, they wisely went to the Marquis's carriage so as not to disturb the couple.
On the carriage.
Gu Jingxi saw that the girl's lips were slightly upturned, and she looked very happy. He admired the girl's courage. Other girls probably wouldn't dare to make a fuss. They would hesitate and worry about their family being disgraced and themselves not being able to hold their heads up in their husband's family. So they would try to hide such shameful and disgraceful things. But this girl was not afraid at all.
He asked softly, "Why didn't you ask me to come back with you, Madam?"
Without hesitation, Meng Jinyao replied matter-of-factly, "Why should I bother others with my own affairs?"
other people?
Gu Jingxi narrowed his eyes slightly and asked teasingly, "Can other people sleep in the same bed with you?"
Meng Jinyao choked up, glanced at him quickly, saw his half-smile, thought for a moment, and then defended herself: "I thought my husband was busy with official duties, so I didn't want to trouble him. I have enough evidence to handle this myself."
Gu Jingxi said gently, "You can handle it yourself, but even a cornered dog will jump over the wall. Madam, please don't be careless next time."
Upon hearing this, Meng Jinyao was slightly taken aback. She hadn't expected her father to want to hit her; it was a miscalculation on her part. After a moment, she asked again, "Why did my husband suddenly appear at the Yongchang Marquis's residence?"
Gu Jingxi replied, "I heard from Chunliu that you went back to your parents' home."
Meng Jinyao was taken aback again, looking at Gu Jingxi with a slightly confused expression. What did her going back to her parents' home have to do with him?
Seeing her confusion, Gu Jingxi explained, "Last time I accompanied you back to your parents' home, I could tell that your relationship with your family wasn't good. If you went back so abruptly, there must be something wrong, so I went to check on you."
Actually, he had something to do today, but upon hearing that the young girl had gone back to her parents' home, and remembering his mother's earnest instructions to help her out, he hesitated for a moment before finally deciding to go to the Yongchang Marquis's residence.
Meng Jinyao was quite surprised. To be able to do such a thing, Gu Jingxi's sense of responsibility must be really strong. No matter who marries him, they will live a good life. Staring at his handsome face, she couldn't help but sincerely sigh, "With such a good husband, it's really her loss if she doesn't want you."
Her topic jumped so quickly that Gu Jingxi's mind couldn't keep up, and he subconsciously asked, "Who?"
Meng Jinyao replied, "Your ex-fiancée, she broke off the engagement and didn't want you, that was her loss."
Upon hearing this, Gu Jingxi paused slightly, then narrowed his eyes, glancing at her with a half-smile, and asked ambiguously, "Is that so?"
