Chapter Eleven: Never Again
Meng Jinyao's smile deepened, her eyes brimming with laughter, her gaze bright, and even her voice was filled with joy: "This is what my husband said."
She hadn't expected Gu Jingxi to be so easy to talk to. After all, he was an older man, nearing thirty, and in a few years he would be someone's grandfather, so he was quite easygoing.
Gu Xiuming is difficult to talk to, always maintaining a high and mighty demeanor. It seems that her decision to marry Gu Jingxi yesterday was the right one, even if it meant living a life of widowhood.
Gu Jingxi noticed her cheerful expression. It was rare for her, usually so calm and composed, to show a bit of the liveliness that a young girl should have. After all, she was still a young girl. No matter how mature and composed she was, she would still have the demeanor of a young girl.
He replied, "Yes, I said so."
The two were far apart in age and were not familiar with each other, so their marriage was forced upon them. After finishing their business, they fell silent. Gu Jingxi didn't want to stay with a child, so she made an excuse to leave.
Meng Jinyao immediately took action, instructing her maid to rearrange the room according to her own preferences, making the interior decorations similar to her boudoir at her parents' home.
Upon seeing this, the maid of Wei Rui Xuan looked on with a pained expression and muttered under her breath, "The Marquis dislikes anything so gaudy and prefers simple colors. I wonder if he will be angry when he comes back and sees the house like this."
Another maid replied, "Even if the Marquis is angry, it is the Madam who suffers. It was the Madam who gave the order, and we were just following orders."
Upon hearing this, the maidservant's face showed disdain: "She really thinks she's a proper Marquis's wife just because she married into the family. She doesn't even think about how she married the Marquis. She messed with the Marquis's courtyard on her second day after entering the house."
Another maid said, "That's right, let's hurry up, all that's left is the bed curtains. Let's get them ready before the Marquis returns, so he can enjoy the show when he comes back."
There's a saying: "Don't talk about people during the day, and don't talk about ghosts at night," and there's truth to that.
As they gossiped behind their backs, the person in question appeared behind them, asking with a half-smile, "What a show to watch?"
Before the maid could react, she subconsciously replied, "Of course, she's just watching our new Marquis's wife make a fool of herself. She lacks confidence, but puts on airs."
"Is that so?" Meng Jinyao chuckled softly, speaking unhurriedly, "Before you watch my show, I'll watch yours first. What do you think?"
Upon hearing this, the two maids turned pale and froze. Turning around, they saw Meng Jinyao looking at them with a half-smile that betrayed no emotion. They panicked, not expecting her to return so quickly. No matter what, she was still their mistress, and if things were investigated, they would surely be punished.
They quickly realized what was happening, glancing resentfully at the other three maids who hadn't joined in the gossip, as if blaming them for not speaking up. Then they curtsied to Meng Jinyao, saying, "This servant greets Madam."
Meng Jinyao sat down, looking at them calmly, her expression authoritative without anger: "It seems that my husband is too busy with official duties and has neglected to manage his servants. Even the maids dare to gossip about their master behind his back."
The two maids knelt down with a thud and quickly admitted their mistake: "Madam, please calm down! We will never dare to do it again!"
"Just don't dare?" Meng Jinyao raised an eyebrow and asked in a low voice, "Don't dare, does that mean you want to gossip about your master, but don't dare? It's not that you don't want to gossip about your master?"
